1 ADFAS Mornington Peninsula Inc : Newsletter Volume 16 Number Dear Members, SEASON 2019 LAUNCH: The program of nine lectures and two interest mornings was launched on 12 October. Brochures and flyers were distributed and a PowerPoint presentation was also screened. The brochures, flyers will be distributed and the PowerPoint will be repeated at the 9 for those who were unable to attend the 12 October lecture. A special form for membership renewals is available on the website and will be handed out again at 9 lecture. Please remember the discounted membership fee for renewals and new memberships applies for fees paid by ACOUSTICS FOR THE 12 OCTOBER LECTURE: I apologise for the acoustics during this lecture. The decision to use only a headset microphone was not enacted and the performance from the lapel microphone was not acceptable. In future, only a headset microphone will be used even if the lecturer wishes otherwise. The lectern microphone was also inadvertently left on at the start of the lecture. At future lectures, the lecturer will not be in total darkness to enhance the quality of the slides. Not being able to see the speaker clearly is detrimental to the clarity of speech. The overhead projector is to be replaced by the Shire and a better quality of the image is expected. We continue to liaise with the Shire to carry out the promised equipment upgrade so that these improvements are completed for the first lecture of RAFFLE: The final raffle for this year will be held at the 9 lecture. The prize is a signed copy of Richard Heathcote s beautifully presented book, Carrick Hill: A Portrait. Richard has kindly donated his book to the Society and all proceeds will go to the Young Arts Program. I look forward to the prospect of seeing you at the AGM at 4.45pm, prior to the 9 lecture. 2 FRIDAY 9 NOVEMBER LECTURE: 5.30 pm Peninsula Community Theatre Richard Heathcote: Carrick Hill Richard Heathcote is currently Director of Benefaction at Carrick Hill House and Garden in Adelaide. He previously managed, for a decade, Rippon Lea Estate, the flagship property of the National Trust in Melbourne. He presented for ABC Television, The New Eden, a six part series which traced the evolution of the Australian garden and he has also published on heritage buildings and gardens. As a graduate of the prestigious Attingham Summer School for the Study of the English Country House, Richard has an extensive knowledge of architecture, collections and social history. Awarded a Churchill Fellowship, he was able to visit places Canada and Britain looking at interpretations of heritage sites. Richard joined the prestigious Royal Collections Studies Group that is granted permission to inspect the Queen s collection at Windsor Castle and other royal palaces. From the late 1930s, Carrick Hill was the home of Edward and Ursula Hayward. Their foothills mansion, with its glorious garden, was alive with social gatherings at which guests from all walks of life were gathered and entertained. The fine collection of art at Carrick Hill has provided rich material for Richard to create exhibitions and publications, using his particular talent of making art accessible to everyone. In his lecture, Richard will describe Edward and Ursula s journey as collectors of fine art and furnishings. Volume 16 Number

3 REFLECTION ON SATURDAY 13 OCTOBER INTEREST MORNING After morning tea, Dr Sophie Oosterwijk presented two one hour lectures, separated by a short break, on the fascinating works and life of Hieronymus Bosch. The presentation was enhanced by the venue in the delightful and intimate Tallis Pavilion at Beleura House. Her exploration of Bosch s art within its historical and cultural context gave an excellent understanding of this intriguing artist and was warmly received by the audience. Members are encouraged to participate in the Interest Mornings as they provide an opportunity to engage in other diverse areas of expertise of the lecturer.
