Program Summary & Learning Objectives Expanding the Definition of Practice PROGRAM SUMMARY: The architecture profession is at a crossroad where both academia and practice are reassessing what it means to be an architect and how the profession is reinventing itself to address the challenges of a changing world. Research has become a defi ning element and tool for the architectural practice. It provides shared knowledge that can inform educated decisions and be imperative to successful design. Research and evidence-based design continues to push the, especial industry s envelope for companies trying to stay at the forefront of innovation and technology. Academic institutions are also incorporating research into their programs and curriculums thus providing students with an added platform for their future professional development. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 1. Learn how to incorporate different research methodologies into practice and the impact and benefi ts of such an approach. 2. Learn how to uphold professional growth within practice by using education as a mean to maintain professional relevancy. 3. Learn how to expand your practice, understanding what the impact markets, project types, fi rm sizes and locations have on the practice model, while preserving the public health safety and welfare. 4. Evaluate the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach to practice as it relates to design and innovation. PROGRAM ABSTRACT: This session will explore research from three perspectives: the architectural practice, academia, and other sectors of the industry. It will focus on how to incorporate research into practice, research collaborations between academic institutions and fi rms, and multidisciplinary collaborations between architectural fi rms and other sectors of the industry. The fi rst presentation will approach different research methodologies, including evidence-based design and how the result from these researches can be applied into practice. It will give us an overview of how architectural fi rms can integrate research and new design approaches into their projects and how this approach can be offered as a tool and service to the clients. The session will be interactive and scholars will gain an understanding of different research methods and how to apply them. The second presentation will dive into the collaboration between academia and practice through a panel discussion. The panelists will talk about their experiences bridging the gap between academia and practice and share their perspectives on how research and academia are helping them innovate and expand the defi nition of practice. The day will culminate with a presentation by an industry partner with experience working in collaboration with architectural fi rms, illustrating their approach to research. They will present different case studies showcasing how other sectors of the industry can positively impact the architect s approach to research and design. 4 III. Speakers & Presentations Presentation #1: RESEARCH 101: Demystifying Research in Architecture Interactive workshop in which scholars will be introduced to different approaches to research. Upali Nanda, PhD Assoc. AIA, EDAC, ACHE Director of Research at HKS, INC. hksinc.com/hks-research Executive Director of CADRE cadreresearch.org Upali Nanda Dr. Upali Nanda is a published author, speaker and researcher with extensive experience in designing, spearheading and implementing research projects in design practice. Her research focuses on the impact of design on human health, organizational effectiveness and systemic wellbeing. She is the Director of Research for HKS, responsible for spearheading and implementing research projects globally. She also serves as the Executive Director for the non-profi t Center for Advanced Design Research and Education. She is a member of the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) Advisory Council, the AIA Research Advisory for Design& Health, and the AAH research council. Her doctoral work on Sensthetics has been published as a book available on Amazon.com, and she has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and main stream media. Her research has been awarded the European Healthcare Design Research Award and two EDRA CORE awards, and she has been the recipient of numerous national grants. In 2015 Dr. Nanda was recognized as one of the top 10 most infl uential people in Healthcare Design for research, by the Healthcare Design Magazine. Presentation #2: PANEL DISCUSSION: The Future of Practice: Research and Collaborations Between Academia and Practice Panel discussion with architecture profesionals and their interaction through research. Carie Penabad Director, Undergraduate Studies; Associate Professor U of M School of Architecture Principal, CURE & PENABAD cureandpenabad.com Carie Penabad Carie Penabad is a founding principal of CURE & PENABAD. She received her Bachelors of Architecture from the University of Miami School of Architecture and her Masters of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University. She, alongside Adib Cure, lead the design team in developing projects ranging from small buildings to large urban design projects. Beyond her role as principal of the fi rm, she is an Associate Professor and Director of the Bachelor of Architecture program at the University of Miami School of Architecture and has taught at a variety of institutions including the Boston Architectural Center and Northeastern University. In 2013, she was appointed the Louis I Kahn Visiting Assistant Professor at Yale University. Tatiana Guimaraes Tatiana has over 15 years of diversifi ed healthcare planning and design experience. She received her Master of Architecture + Health from Clemson University. She has maintained major responsibilities across a broad spectrum of projects leading planning teams in the creation of innovative facilities throughout the United States. These experiences have regularly provided her direct exposure to state-of-the-art health delivery systems and hospitals from which she is able to bring fresh insights to each new project. Her approach to design stresses the importance of creating innovative planning that maximizes operational effi ciencies and allows for future fl exibility and adaptability, while designing healing environments for patients, staff and families. 5 III. Speakers & Presentations Newton D Souza Newton D souza is an Associate Professor at the Department of Interior Architecture, Florida International University. He holds a PhD in architecture from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a Master s degree in design from the National University of Singapore. He has previously served as a Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Architectural Studies, and a faculty collaborator at the Immersive Lab, University of Missouri-Columbia (MU). He has also practiced as an architect and interior designer at Bangalore, India. Newton D Souza, PhD Associate Professor Department of Interior Architecture College of Communication, Architecture and the Arts (CARTA) Florida International University carta.fi u.edu During the past two decades his research and teaching has focused on design cognition, creativity, human factors for design, environment-behavior and emerging media environments. He is widely published in Journal of Design Studies, Architecture Research Quarterly, and Journal of Design Research. Currently, he is authoring a book titled The Multi-Skilled Designer: A Cognitive Explanation for Diversity in Architectural Thinking from Routledge publications involving archival research from reputed and alternative architecture design practices. He initiated the Creative Convergence Network, at University of Missouri involving a multidisciplinary faculty forum to investigate multidisciplinary team creativity, and whose work was recently published in a special section of journal of design studies. He serves as an active member of the Environment Design Research Association and the Design Thinking Research Symposium. He is a recipient of several grant funding awards including MU System Research Board award, MU Research Council Award, and Mizzou Advantage Media of the Future Award. He has served as a chair and committee member for various graduate doctoral committees and was a recipient of 2014 Ernest L. Boyer International Award for Excellence in Teaching, Learning, and Technology. It seemed only natural that my architecture career would focus on healthcare buildings. I was drawn to understanding how the hospital functioned, not the anxious or stressful environment that the medical profession can be. How the physical spaces were organized, as well as the operational aspects, were intriguing to me, says Arthur. The connection between facilities and operations lead him to pursue an education in architecture and healthcare administration, and eventually into leadership positions in the Latin American healthcare planning and design circles. For the past 15 years, he s served as a liaison between U.S. healthcare planning and local regulations and their cultures. As Health Practice Leader for HKS Miami, Arthur blends his international expertise and links healthcare strategies and operations to solutions-based health facilities and outcomes.. Presentation #3: COLLABORATION: Research Influence on Product Design Presentation exploring the impact of research and benefi ts of collaboration between different sectors of the industry. Jodi Kiel Seely With over 18 years in the Contract Furnishings business, Jodi Kiel Seely has a diverse sales background. Most recently, Jodi s, experience has been with Herman Miller, serving as the Architectural and Design Consultant for the Southeast Area. In that capacity, Jodi leads sales pursuits, shares healthcare CEU s and serves as a Living Offi ce Specialist, facilitating in depth conversations around trends in the healthcare and commercial industry. Jodi is EDAC certifi ed and is trained in lean process improvement. In Jodi s career, she has touched many vertical markets for architectural and interior needs inclusive of: Healthcare, Commercial, Education and Hospitality. Previously, Jodi has held positions with both Knoll and Standard Textile. Jodi serves on both professional and community organizations including: The Board of Directors of the Hospital Hospitality House of Nashville and The American Institute of Architects Academy of Architecture for Health committee in Nashville Tennessee. Jodi is a graduate of Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and lives in Nashville, TN with her husband Bryan. Jodi enjoys hiking, swimming and home renovations. 5
