2 1. The Modern Heritage in Tokyo Tour, arranged by the Landscape Lab. The Modern Heritage in Tokyo Tour, an annual event for our Landscape and Civic Design Lab., took place on the 13th of June this year. The tour s purpose is to see the modern heritage of infrastructure and architecture in Tokyo. It is an optional event for the class Landscape and Civic Design, and is mainly open for undergraduate students. The tour begins in the bridgehead square of Nihon-bashi bridge. We walk through Tokyo Station, the Marunouchi district, and the Imperial Palace Plaza to Hibiya Park in the morning. In the afternoon we go around to see the regenerated elementary school and temporary pedestrian precinct in Ginza, the replica of the first railway station ex-shimbashi station and the Hama-rikyu Palace. Finally we take a boat trip to see the historical bridges along Sumida river from the water and head for Asakusa, the final destination to celebrate with a cold glass of beer and Denki Bran, which is a unique cocktail born in the modern era of Japan. Actually this tour was born at the time Prof. Nakai was a student of our lab and has a 20-year-long history. The route has not changed much since the beginning of this annual event, and the pamphlet of the tour is edited by successive students every year. Year by year they are adding and editing information like the sauce in long-established Yakitori Bars, which is never exchanged entirely, but rather refilled before it is finished. Ultimately, the pamphlet for this year exceeded 80 pages and became increasingly dense by referring to the thesis about the location planning of government office buildings in the Meiji era, written by Prof. E. Thanks to eight Japanese audience members from the Host Family Program, all speakers could successfully show the benefits of their daily language practice. 5 4. Iftar Party by TUICS (July 6, Gotenshita) This year s Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting) took place from 18th June to 17th July. During Ramadan Islamic people gather and eat meals together after sunset, which is called Iftar. The Tokyo University Islamic Cultural Society (TUICS) holds an Iftar party every year with the purpose of cultural exchange with Islamic students. They invite all those who are interested in Islamic culture and treat the participants to traditional Islamic dishes. We could have a wonderful moment in an international atmosphere.
