1 BUCHANAN OF L E N Y JOHN DE BUCHANAN, 1 ST OF LENY, was a younger son of John de Buchanan of that Ilk, by his wife Janet Leny, and to whom his father disponed the lands of Leny. He was father of : 1. Andrew de Buchanan, 2 nd of Leny, (see below). 2. William Buchanan, served heir provisional in the lands of Buchanan by Patrick Buchanan of that Ilk on 16 October, A daughter, who is said in 1560, to have m. MacFarlane of Arrochar. ANDREW DE BUCHANAN, 2 ND OF LENY, succeeded his father in the lands of Leny and was included in the remainder of a charter for the lands of Buchanan dated 16 October He mareit ane gentill woman callit Marian Lokart, dochtir to the Laird of Bar, and me Lord Drumondis dochtir hir mvthir, quhairthrow this house of Lany gat greit kyndes of me Lord Drumonis hous, and standis to this day, and was father of : 1. John Buchanan, 3 rd of Leny, (see below). 2. Archibald Buchanan of Lettir, was included in the remainder for the lands of Buchanan on 16 October 1463, and to whom Patrick de Leny of Lettir disponed the lands of Lettir on 24 April He was father of : 2a} Janet Buchanan, m. firstly, Robert Tosheoch, second son of Andrew Tosheoch of Monzievaird. She m. secondly, by 1 May 1484, to William Stewart, 2 nd of Balindoran, (he survived her and m. secondly, by 5 October 1498, to Mariota, daughter of Sir Colin Campbell, 3 rd of Glenorchy, and had issue), when they had a charter from her father for the lands of Lettir 3 and had issue. 3. Walter Buchanan of Tombuie, who is named in the remainder for the lands of Buchanan on 16 October 1463 and to whom his father resigned the lands of Petquhonordy for which he had a charter under the Great Seal on 16 October He acted as Bailie to his brother Archibald Buchanan of Lettir in an Sasine for these lands in favour of his daughter Janet and William Stewart of Balindoran, her spouse, on 1 May He had issue, (see Buchanan of Auchlessie and Arnrior). 4. George Buchanan, was included in the remainder of the lands of Buchanan on 16 October Gilbert Buchanan, was a substitute heir to the lands of Buchanan by Patrick Buchanan of that Ilk on 16 October 1463, and was ordained Minister at Lany and Inchcalleach. 6. Walter Buchanan, secundus, is named as a substitute heir to the lands of Buchanan by Walter de Buchanan on 21 May A daughter, m. Mathew Graham, 2 nd of Garvock, and had issue. JOHN BUCHANAN, 3 RD OF LENY, was included in the remainder for the lands of Buchanan on 21 May 1474 and succeeded his father in the lands of Leny. He m. 3 her terce of the lands of Leny to her grandson Patrick Buchanan of Leny, on 23 November He d. before July 1498 and was father of : 1. Robert Buchanan, 4 th of Leny, (see below). 2. John Buchanan, is styled brother to Robert Buchanan of Leny when witness to a reversion by John Buchanan of Glassingall to this Robert for part of the lands of Leny dated 16 July ROBERT BUCHANAN, 4 TH OF LENY, succeeded his father and had a precept of resignation for the lands of Petquhonarty made into the hands of the King by his procurator John Buchanan of Petquonarty, for new infefment in his favour on 17 June According to his grand s testimony, he mareit the Laird of Glenegis doctir she being a daughter of Sir John Haldane, 6 th of Gleneagles, and d. before 1 April He was father of : 1. PATRICK BUCHANAN, 5 TH OF LENY, had a gift of his own ward from King James IV. on 1 April 1502 and was infeft in the lands of Leny and Ledenurquhart, in the sheriffdom of Fife, in He had a resignation from his grandmother, Marion Muschet, of her terce of the lands of Leny on 23 November and m. firstly, a daughter of Sempill of Foulwood, by whom had issue. He m. secondly, to Margaret, daughter of Buchanan of that Ilk and d. in 1535, his lands of Easter Ledinurquhart having been in the King s hands for the space of seventeen years before the entry of the heir, his daughter Margaret, on 22 December He was father of : 1a} Walter Buchanan, to whom his father resigned the lands of Boquhapple which was confirmed under the Great Seal on 14 December He was 6 Keir Charters. He m. Isobel Henderson with whom he had a charter from William Buchanan of Auchmar for an annualrent of 20 Scots to be uplifted from the mill of Strathyre on 25 April He d. by May of 1592 and was father of, 1c} Janet Buchanan, who, on 4 May 1592, was infeft as her parent s heir in the annualrent of 20 from the mill of Strathyre. 12 She raised an action against George Buchanan of Auchmar and his tenants of his lands of mill of Strathyre for the withholding of her annualrent for which she had a decree from the Lords of Council and Session on 8 June 1610, 13 and assigned her rights to this to her son, Walter Chisholm, on 24 May She d. by 5 December 1622, when her son Walter, was infeft in the annualrent from Strathyre as his deceased mother s heir. 15 1a} Margaret Buchanan. 5 by then to William Luke, and on 22 December 1552 she had Sasine of the lands of Easter Ledinurquhart, in the sheriffdom of Fife, as heir to her deceased father. 17 1a} Janet Buchanan, was served heir portioner of her father in the lands of London and Petlembertie, in the Sheriffdom of Fife, on 24 July She m. by 23 September 1539, to Maurice MacNaughton. 1a} Elizabeth Buchanan, m. by 23 September 1539, to Andrew Murray in Glenalmond, and had issue. 1a} Egedia Buchanan, m. by 23 September 1539, to Alexander Stewart, and had issue. 2. John Buchanan, ksp at the battle of Flodden in September of Robert Buchanan, m. Marion, daughter of Alexander Graham, 2 nd Earl of Menteith, (Dispensation dated 28 November ), and had issue : 3a} JOHN BUCHANAN, 6 TH OF LENY, succeeded his uncle in these lands and quay deid in Pinge feild in September of b} Robert Buchanan, 7 th of Leny, (see below). ROBERT BUCHANAN, 7 TH OF LENY, succeeded his elder brother, John, and was infeft in his lands as heir to him in June of In about 1560 during a dispute with Stirling of Keir he penned a detailed and useful memorial narrating the genealogy of his family for a number of generations previous to himself as well as naming their interconnections via marriage, an excerpt of which reads: Robert that mareit Glenegis dochtir, his eldest sone wes callit Patrik, and mareit the Laird of Fowlatis dochter, Semple, and sho deid without ony maill childrin. This Patrik eftir hir deceis mareit the Laird of Buchquhananes dochtir ; scho buir him ane sone and tway docteris. To conclude, I Robert Buchquhanane of Lany that ringis now, sone to Robert and Marion Graham; I am cheif of the avld family of Lany ; quairof it is weill knauin thair wes alauin knightis, and sauin lairdis befoir thay war surnamit Buchquananis, as it fully schawin in the tree of the house ; and I am air maill and air of talzye to the first infeftment that euir wes taen be ane Buchquanane oft the landis oft Lany, quhowbeit my titill to the heriage wes provydit be Patrick, my fathir brothir, to my brothir callit Johne, quhay deid in Pinge feild, quay wes infeft in the haill leving, the maist pairt in lyfrent, as weill as the left in heritage ; and I now, as air to my brothir, thinkis my kyndnes to be haldin sumpart in effect, according to the antiquity befoir written, quhilk thocht will remaine in menis hairts ay quhill the present caiss be reconsalit. 20 He m. firstly, by 22 June 1557, to Janet, daughter of Patrick Graham, 1 st of Inchbraikie, 21 (she was widow of Dugald Campbell, younger son of Sir John Campbell of Ardkinglass, by whom she had issue. She d. in August of ). He m. secondly, Barbara, daughter of George Muschet of Burnbank, (she survived him and m. secondly, to Robert Murray, 4 th of Buchanty, by whom she had issue), and was father of : 1. 7 2. Robert Buchanan, 8 th of Leny, (see below). 3. Sir John Buchanan of Scotscraig, acquired the lands of Scotscraig and m. Margaret Hartside with whom he was infeft in the tenement in the town of Kirkwall known as Midtown on 15 May He d. in 1643 and was father of : 3a} Margaret Buchanan, m. to Arthur Erskine, younger son of John Erskine, Earl of Mar, who, in her right, acquired the lands of Scotscraig. She was served heir-portioner to her father in his half part of the lands of Sound on 27 February They had issue. 3a} Catherine Buchanan, m. William Forbes, fiar of Rires, (he was k. at the battle of Tibbermuir in 1644), with whom she had a charter in her virginity from his father Robert Forbes of Rires for the barony of Rires on 31 August She was served heir-portioner to her father on 27 February 1643, and had issue. 4. James Buchanan of Sheriffhall, became a servant to King James VI. and obtained the lands of Sherrifhall from James Gifford of Sheriffhall by charter dated 20 June 1620, and confirmed under the Great Seal on 5 June He m. Jean Lundie and had issue, 4a} John Buchanan of Sheriffhall, had a charter for the lands of Sheriffhall from his father on 14 January 1627, in which he is styled his second son by Jean Lundie. He m. Jean, daughter of Drummond of Riccarton, and disponed Sheriffhall to John Stirling, son of James Stirling of Auchyle, on 28 January Solomon Buchanan, d. before July of 1626 and was father of, 23 GD31/ Retours. 8 5a} Robert Buchanan, became a servant and then Master in the King s Wine Cellar and was served heir to his father on 15 July He m. Dorothy Buchanan, d. by February of 1663 and was father of, 5b} Jean Buchanan, 5b} Mary Buchanan, both of whom were served heirs to their father on 28 February Thomas Buchanan of Sound, had a charter under the Great Seal for the lands of Sound, in Orkney, which had been resigned in his favour by his nieces, Catherine and Margaret Buchanan, daughters of his brother Sir John Buchanan. and their respective husbands, on 7 April He had m. by then to Margaret Smyth and was father of, 6a} George Buchanan of Sound, succeeded his father and was served heir to him in the lands of Sound, in the bishopric of Orkney, on 20 March He had died with apparently issue by 11 November a} Arthur Buchanan of Sound, m. Margaret Buxton to whom he granted a charter for the liferent of his lands of Sound on 11 November 1663, in which he styles himself son of the deceased Thomas Buchanan of Sound, brother of the deceased Sir John Buchanan of Scottscraig, 30 and states that he had obtained those lands from his deceased brother George Buchanan of Sound, eldest son of the said Thomas Buchanan. He was buried in the Greyfriars, Edinburgh, on 18 May 1674, 31 having had issue : 6b} William Buchanan of Sound, succeeded his father 32 and dsp. 27 Retours. Gen. 9 6a} John Buchanan of Sandsyde, was appointed Tutor to his nephew, William Buchanan of Sound, and also to Robert Stewart, eldest son of the deceased Colonel John Stewart of Newark, and acquired the four shilling lands of Sandsyde in which he was infeft on 30 March He m. Anna, daughter of John Graham, 1 st of Breckness, (c/m 28 July 1666), and was father of : 6b} Thomas Buchanan of Sandsyde, in favour of whom his father conveyed the lands of Sandsyde by charter of 4 February 1676, with remainder to himself and his heirs male, whcih failing, to Arthur Buchanan, his brother. 34 He m. Margaret, eldest daughter of Sir Alexander Douglas of Egilschaw, (c/m 8 November 1708), and was father of : 6c} James Buchanan of Sandsyde, succeeded his father and dsp before 3 November c} Janet Buchanan, succeeded her brother, James, and was served heir general to him on 3 November She m. James Fea of Clestron, (c/m in August of ), and was charged to enter heir to her granduncle, Arthur Buchanan of Sound, and to William Buchanan of Sound, son to her said granduncle, as nearest heir on 23 June b} Arthur Buchanan, was included in the remainder of his brother, Thomas s charter for the lands of Sandyde on 4 February a} William Buchanan of Rusland, was apprenticed to Thomas Buchanan, Merchant in Edinburgh, on 20 June and to whom his grand-niece, 33 GD31/ GD31/ GD31/ GD31/ SRS Register of Edinburgh Apprentices. 10 Janet Buchanan, daughter of Thomas Buchanan of Sandsyde, was served heir on 24 January a} Thomas Buchanan, was apprenticed to George Reid, Merchant in Edinburgh, on 18 March a} Katherine Buchanan, m. in 1645, to James Stewart of Graemesay, (he survived her and m. secondly, to Isabel, daughter of Archibald Bruce of Powfoulis). 7. Duncan Buchanan, is styled brother to James Buchanan of Sheriffhall when witness to a charter by that brother conveying the lands of Sheriffhall to John Buchanan, his second son on 14 January Margaret Buchanan, m. John Buchanan of Ballecondochie, (he d. on 3 May 1603). ROBERT BUCHANAN, 8 TH OF LENY, was a son by his father s second marriage and succeeded to the lands of Leny. He m. in 1602, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Stirling, 2 nd of Ardoch, d. in January of and was father of : 1. ROBERT BUCHANAN, 9 TH OF LENY, succeeded his father on his death in 1615 and was served heir to him in the Churchlands of Leny on 25 October He m. Katherine, daughter of Sir James Campbell, 4 th of Lawers, (c/m 29 December She survived him and m. secondly, to John Buchanan of Arnprior), d. in April of 1643 and was father of : 1a} ROBERT BUCHANAN, 10 TH OF LENY, succeeded his father and was served heir to him in the churchlands of Leny on 25 June He was contracted to marry Helen, daughter of Sir John Rollo of Bannockburn, to 38 Services of Heirs. 39 SRS Register of Edinburgh Apprentices. 40 Dunblane Tests 41 Retours. George Buchanan, who was murdered by a party of Drummonds near the Kirk of Buchanan in March of Helen Buchanan, 5. Barbara Buchanan, JOHN BUCHANAN, 11 TH OF LENY, succeeded his cousin, Robert Buchanan of Leny, in the lands of Leny as heir male and m. in 1666, Jean, daughter of John MacFarlane of that Ilk. He was father of : 1. John Buchanan, who had dsp by January of COLIN BUCHANAN, 13 TH OF LENY, succeeded to the lands of Leny and was served heir to his father and his brother, John, firstly, on 23 January and then again on on 21 March He d. unmarried between then and September of 1734 and was father of : 2a} Helen Buchanan, was a natural daughter by Isabel Drummond and was bap. at Callander on 8 February James Buchanan, who had dsp by September of ROBERT BUCHANAN, 14 TH OF LENY, succeeded his brother Colin in the lands of Leny and was served heir to him on 14 September He m. firstly, at Dumbarton, on 12 August 1737, to Marion, daughter of Aulay MacAulay, Provost of Edinburgh, 49 and secondly, Christian, daughter of John Buchanan of Spittall, and dsp at Arnprior in September of ELIZABETH BUCHANAN OF LENY, succeeded on the death of her brother, Robert and was served heir to both her uncle, John Buchanan, younger of Leny, and her father on 22 March She m. Francis Buchanan of Arnprior, (he was executed on 18 October 1746), and dsp at Leny on 11 February 1776, in her 75 th year MARGARET BUCHANAN OF LENY, d. unmarried. Patrick Drummond of Mailer with whom she is named in her brother Henry s Testament in Katherine Buchanan, was living in March of 1730 and m. Thomas Buchanan, 10 th of Spittall, (he survived her and m. secondly, to Elizabeth, daughter and heiress of John Hamilton of Bardowie, by whom he had issue), who succeeded to the lands of Leny.
