4 Guest Speaker Timothy Swanson LEED AP CannonDesign, USA Tim Swanson is focused on leveraging design to elevate the human condition in remarkable ways. Tim brings a unique, global perspective to his design work and is passionately focused on keeping the needs of people and their communities at the forefront of all design efforts. Tim is an advocate for smart growth and sustainable development, working with leaders at the intersection of urban planning, public health and education, identifying new ways design and strategy can positively influence socioeconomic conditions. Designer, urban planner, innovator, teacher, leader, entrepreneur, Tim Swanson leads both CannonDesign s Chicago office and its City Design Practice, a group focused on helping cities around the world grow and prosper. The Interconnectivity of Design: What the developed and undeveloped world can learn from each other. The connectivity embedded in design is powerfully fascinating. Design solutions from one corner of the world can inform cities and environments on entirely different continents. Ideas and strategies in developing countries can reveal new paths forward for modern cities and vice versa. The universality of designing successful places and systems that elevate the human condition is undeniable. Recognizing there are no quick, easy paths to improving health outcomes or access to education for our global population, Tim s presentation introduces ideas and models that can inform new efforts that ignite positive momentum. 5 Guest Speaker AKL/TGA Hamish Monk NZIA Monk Mackenzie NZ Monk Mackenzie is a highly creative, multi-disciplinary studio of architects and designers. Established to provide clients with elegant, sculptural and poetic architectural solutions, the studio has a strong interest in creating unique design environments through the embrace of technology and innovative methodologies. Drawing from their extensive international background in architectural firms such as the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM), both partners share an ethos of design excellence and innovation. Their combined experience encompasses large and complex infrastructural, cultural and commercial projects across the United States, Europe, Middle East and Asia. Going forward the studio aims to make high-quality contributions to the built environment in an environmentally intelligent and integrated way, assimilating client imperatives with acute knowledge of technology and efficient delivery. Nelson St Cycleway or #LightPathAKL: MMA in collaboration with LandLAB. The project is the reuse of a redundant piece of Auckland s highway infrastructure and was reinvented as a cycleway that completes Auckland s inner city cycle loop. The six hundred meter offramp is painted a bright resolute pink to signal an urban realm for pedestrians and cyclists that is differentiated from the surrounding active highway network. Three hundred individual LED light poles are arranged as a spine down one side of the cycleway, acting as an interactive light sculpture that transforms the new urban space at dusk, thus giving the project its name.

6 Guest Speaker WGN Nic Ballara NZIA bbc architects NZ bbc architects is a Wellington practice, adept at working with small and steep sites, however they have worked on projects from Northland to Otago. They enjoy the diversity of landscape New Zealand offers, and working in different conditions challenges their design responses, and allows them to be creative. 45 degree house: The house that hangs off the cliff. Wellington s population is predicted to double in size in only the next 30 years. Greenfield sites 30 minutes drive north are favoured by those keen to avoid perceived inaccessibility and high development costs for CBD sites. For local architect Nic Ballara, perceptions were no drawback. Despite the bush-clad hills and valleys accommodating hundreds of vacant building sites within a couple of kilometres of the Wellington CBD, no one considers them and no wonder, most designers suggest extensive earthworks to create flat platforms accessed by long stairways or cable car to avoid the planning battle with one of the country s most uncooperative local councils. Determined to both build a spectacular home for his family and explore a solution to this dilemma, Ballara came up with a design for a house that would literally hang off a 45-degree cliff face. We fell in love with the location and the view straight away. However no known house typology was going to work here, so the brief became to invent one. I wanted to try something different, and in so doing create a prototype for Wellington. I wanted to prove it s possible to turn an inhospitable site into an effective and efficient place to build, just by using a distinct building typology. One year on, Ballara will talk us through his gravity-defying back-pack 45 degree house recently featured on Grand Designs New Zealand, passing on his experience and lessons learned completing the project.
