4 Work Terre Mécanique In collaboration with MIT s Self Assembly Lab, Kelly Nipper presents Terre Mécanique, her Performa 17 Commission. Terre Mécanique is a performance with four performers, an architectural scale printer, an 8 diameter spherical tank and object-environments inspired by the materiality of movement and dancers bodies. The performance brings together early experiments in the evolution of still and moving images, Laban Movement Analysis, and the transformation of space through the process of engineering and object production. This process of shaping large scale works through the iteration of many ancillary pieces is an emblematic part of Nipper s artistic practice. Terre Mécanique dismantles ideas about the built environment and interpersonal communication while exploring systems of meaning that are abstract and obscure, on an epistemological periphery.

6 Kelly Nipper (b. 1971, Minnesota) received her BFA in Media Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an MFA in Photography/ Art from the California Institute of the Arts. Nipper s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Kunsthaus Zürich, Tramway, and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Her performances have been commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, South London Gallery, and Performa. The Self-Assembly Lab focuses on selfassembly and programmable material technologies for novel manufacturing, products and construction processes. It is housed at MIT s International Design Center and is co-directed by Jared Laucks and Skylar Tibbits, Assistant Professor of Design Research in the Department of Architecture at MIT. Skylar was named R&D Magazine s 2015 Innovator of the Year and has previously worked at renowned design offices like Zaha Hadid Architects and Asymptote Architecture.
