3 PREFACE This is the family of Warburtons The Bakers of Bolton. The tree is based on one published by Warburtons Bakers, which I have fleshed out using on-line sources including censuses, parish records, and birth, marriage and death registrations. The family is descended from Henry born in 1805, the son of Thomas and Sarah. Although I have a paper on the website on Thomas and Sarah Families in the area, the identities of Thomas and Sarah are uncertain. An additional line was provided by Harold Schofield.

The possibilities for the identities of Thomas and Sarah are discussed in my paper Thomas and Sarah Families on the Papers page of my website (warburton.one-name.net). There is no clear cut solution and they could be a couple recently moved to the area. A Y-chromosome DNA result from the clan could be useful. Thomas married Sarah. They had one child: 2 i. Henry was born in Walmersley, Lancashire, on 26 Jun He was christened in Edensfield Chapel, Lancashire, on 11 Aug Census for Walmersley, Lancashire, in Henry Warbutton (36) is a cotton carder living at Deeply Hill (parish of Bury) with Ann (25), Amelia (11), George (9), Betty (7), Margaret (6), Thomas (4), Mary (2), and James (6 mths). Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Henry Warbutton (transcribed by Ancestry as Warhelton), aged 46, is a cotton spinner living at 11 Lower Mill Hall with Ann (44), George (19) a cotton spinner, Betty (17), Margaret (16), Thomas (14), and Mary (12) all piecers, Ann (8), Henry (6), Peter (4), and Sarah (1). Henry died in Bolton, Lancashire, in He was buried in Holcombe Chapelry, Lancashire, on 22 May This tree is based on a Family Tree published in a booklet called 125 Years by Warburtons Bakers. It has been extended with information from censuses, registrations and parish records found in on-line sources. The baptism record at Edenfield Chapel is the only one close to his birth date, and likely place of birth, and there is no evidence of a second Henry to account for this baptism. On balance therefore, it is likely this is the same Henry. However there are a couple of issues. Firstly in the 1851 census his age is 46, and place of birth Walmsly. This would put his birth between April 1804 and March His age at death is consistent with this. However the Henry at Edenfield wasn t born until July. Secondly the baptism gives the family abode as Edenfield. The place of birth on the 1851 census is probably meant to be Walmsley in Bolton. However he married a girl from Holcombe, which is close to Walmersley, near Bury, and he spent his early married life there, being recorded as living there in the 1841 census. Also he was buried in Holcombe Chapelry. Therefore, he was most probably born at Walmersley, but in 1851, when the family were living in Bolton, the census enumerator confused this with Walmsley near Bolton. Henry is the first of four children of Thomas and Sarah of Edenfield, but is preceeded by 4 children of Thomas and Sarah of Walmersley. If this is one family this could explain Henry s stated place of birth. One concern is the family now has a Thomas and a Thommy, and there is no obvious burial record for the first Thomas, though this doesn t mean he couldn t hae died young. The identity of Thomas and Sarah is uncertain. The only marriage prior to the first of the eight children involves a Sally rather than Sarah and the only baptism in the Bury area around the right time (early 1770s is of a Sally). The couple may have moved from elsewhere following the jobs in the mills, or the marriage record may be lost. The couple do not seem to have survived until the first census in 1841, though there are no obvious burial records that can be linked to them. His death was registered in 2q 1853 Bolton 8c 174, aged 48. According to FamilySearch he was 5

7 Second Generation living at Lower Mile Hill, Bolton at the time of his death. This is probably a poor transcription of Lower Mill Hall. Baptiams can only be found for 2 of Henry s children. Many of his descendants are recorded as marrying at Bolton Registery Office, or Registrar Attending. This probably reflects the fact the family were Methodists, and the weddings were Methodist marriages. On 23 Dec 1827 when Henry was 22, he married Ann Hamer in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire. Ann was born in Holcombe, Lancashire, in She was christened in Bury, St Mary, Lancashire, on 25 Dec Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Ann Warbutton (48) is a widow living at 16 Higher Terrace with George (29) a cotton spinner, Betty (27) a cotton drawer, Margaret (26) a cotton picker of yarn, Mary (22) a worker in cotton mill, Ann (18) a frame tenter, Henry (16) a card grinder, Peter (14) a cotton mule piecer, Sarah (12) a cotton bark tenter, Amelia (9), John (7), and Emma (2). Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Ann is living with son Henry. Ann died in Bolton, Lancashire, in The FamilySearch records site has baptism records for Bury, St Mary, and for Walmersley. The latter may simply reflect her abode. On censuses she refers to her place of birth as Holcombe, or Tottington which is adjacent to Walmersley. Her death was registered in 3q 1879 Bolton 8c 178, aged 66. 6

Betty died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Betty s death was registered in 4q 1902 Bolton 9c 288, aged 69. In 1867 when Betty was 34, she married Ralph Tonge in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. The marriage was registered in 4q 1867 Bolton 8c 485. Ralph was born in Horwich, Lancashire, abt Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Ralph (52) is a grocer living at 2 Rhyl Street with Betty (47), one son and 2 daughters, and Emma Warburton (23) a cotton mill hand. Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Ralph (62) is a grocer living at 2 Rhyl Street with Betty (57), one son and 2 daughters, and Emma Warburton (33) a cotton frame tenter. Ralph died in Bolton, Lancashire, in iv. Ralph s death is probably that registered in 2q 1893 Bolton 8c 302. His age at 62 is a little low but it is the only one at Bolton before 1902 when Betty is a widow. Margaret Warburton. Margaret was born in Holcombe, Lancashire, in She was christened in Holcombe, St Emmanuel, Lancashire, on 26 Jul Margaret died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Margaret has not been found in the 1870 census, nor in Bolton marriages before She is possibly the Margaret whose death was registered in 1q 1870 Bolton 8c 262, aged 35. v. Thomas Warburton. Thomas was born in Holcombe, Lancashire, in Census for Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire, in Thomas (24) is a cotton spinner living in Back Tonge view with Ellen (23). Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Thomas (43) is a grocer and baker living at 125 Blackburn Road with Ellen (42). Census for Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire, in Thomas (54) is living on own means at 239 Tonge Moor Road with Ellen (53). Census for Tonge, Bolton, Lancashire, in Thomas (64) is a retired baker living on own means at 239 Tonge Moor Road with Ellen (63). Thomas died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Thomas s baptism is not recorded in on-line resources. His birth might be that registered in 3q 1837 Bury His death was registered in 3q 1909 Bolton 8c 227, aged 72. 7

Ellen was born abt vi. Ellen was the daughter of Edward Platt. Mary Warburton. Mary was born in Holcombe, Lancashire, abt Mary died aft There are several possible birth registrations at Bury for Mary. There is no exact death registration for Mary Bromley in Bolton. vii. viii. In 1864 when Mary was 26, she married Walter Bromley in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. This is Mary s probable marriage based on her age and place of birth. It was registered in 2q 1864 Bolton 8c 422. Walter was born in Bolton, Lancashire, abt James Warburton. James was born in Holcombe, Lancashire, abt James died bef James s birth was probably that registered in 1q 1841 Bury He doesn t appear in subsequent censuses or the Warburtons Family Tree and so probably died young. Ann Warburton. Ann was born in Birtle, Lancashire, in Ann died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Anns birth was registered in 2q 1842 Bury Her death, assuming she married Daniel Walker, was possibly that registered in 2q 1901 Bolton, 8c 282, aged 58. In 1862 when Ann was 20, she married Daniel Walker in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. This is Ann s probable marriage based on her age and place of birth. It was registered in 2q 1862 Bolton 8c 362. Daniel was born in Tootil Bridge, Lancashire, abt ix. Henry Warburton ( ) 5 x. Peter Warburton ( ) xi. Sarah Warburton. Sarah was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Sarah died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Sarah s birth is probably that registered in 2q 1849 Bolton Her death, assuming she did marry John Tonge, is possibly that registered in 2q 1908 Bolton 8c 246, aged 59. In 1877 when Sarah was 28, she married John Tonge in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. This is Sarah s probable marriage based on her age and place 8

Amelia was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Amelia s birth was registered in 1q 1852 Bolton 8c 241. In 1877 when Amelia was 25, she married William Holt in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. William was born in Bolton, Lancashire, abt Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in William (60), and Amelia (59 are living at 24 Horsa Street. With them is Emma Warburton (52) a single charwoman. Amelia and William have been married 33 years but had no children. 6 xiii. John Warburton ( ) xiv. Emma Warburton. Emma was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Emma is living with brother Henry. Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Emma is living with sister Betty. This is 5 years after her father s death, though she is recorded as a daughter of Ann in the 1861 census, and always as sister or sister-in-law to whichever sibling s family she is living with in subsequent censuses. She would appear to be illegitimate, though it possible she is Ann s granddaughter rather than daughter. Her death was registered in 1q 1919 Bolton 8c 733, aged 60. 9

Henry was born in Haslingden, Lancashire, in Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Henry (27) is a cotton carder living at 51 St John Street with wife Margaret (27), mother Ann (58), sisters Sarah (21), Amelia (19), and Emma () all cotton operators, brother John (18) a worker at a bleach works, and son George (10 months). Henry died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Henry s birth was registered in 3q 1844 Bury He has not been found in censuses after He had children born in Russia between 1880 and The fact the eldest son George 10

12 Third Generation was with his grandparents in 1881 sugpports the fact he left before then. In 1901 his wife and family are back in Bolton, but Henry is still absent. A death registered in 2q 1903 Bolton 8c 259, aged 58, may be him. In 1864 when Henry was 20, he married Margaret Knowles in Bolton Register Office, or Registrar attended. The marriage was registered in 4q 1864 Bolton 8c 393. Margaret was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Margaret (56) is living at 78 Charles Rupert Street with Harry (24) a piecer in a cotton mill, James (18) a cabinet maker s apprentice, Emma (16) a niddle setter in a cotton mill, Frank (12), Edward (9), and Alice (6). Margaret is described as a wife, and married. Margaret died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Margaret s birth is probably one of two registered at Bolton in 1q 1845 (21 114, and ). She has not been found in the 1911 census so she is probably the Margaret whose death was registered in 4q 1908 Bolton 8c 291, aged 63. They had the following children: 10 i. George Warburton (1870-) ii. Margaret Ann Warburton. Margaret Ann was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Margaret s birth was registered in 4q 1871 Bolton 8c 327. There are several marriages of a Margaret Ann, though the first in Bolton is in However Margaret has not been found in the 1901 census, suggesting she might already be married. 11 iii. Emma was born in Moscow, Russia, abt Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Emma (26) is a cotton winder and described as a relative of John and Ellen Alma Knowles (probably aunt and uncle) with whom she is living at 62 Astley Street. vii. Frank Warburton. Frank was born in Russia abt Frank has not been found in the 1911 census. viii. Edward Warburton. Peter was born in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, in Census for Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Peter (24) is a cotton spinner living at 11 Manchester Street with Elizabeth (24), and Mary A (3). Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Peter (34) is a cotton spinner living at 709 Waterloo Street, Little Bolton with Elizabeth (34), Amelia (7). Thomas (3), and Mary Elizabeth (1). Census for Radcliffe, Lancashire, in Peter (44) is a cotton spinner overlooker living at 264 Ainsworth Road with Elizabeth (34), Amelia (17) a cotton winder, Sarah (15) a cotton winder, Thomas () a cotton piecer, William (9), and Annie (7). In 1866 when Peter was 19, he married Elizabeth Hensor in Bolton, Christ Church, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 4q 1866 Bolton 8c 322 (indexed as Warbutton and Henson). Elizabeth was born in Bolton, Lancashire, in Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Elizabeth (54) is a widow living at 11 Augustus Street with Thomas (23) a machine minder, cotton spinning mill, William (19) a worker, cotton spinning mill, Sarah (25) a machine minder, cotton mill, and Annie (17) a domestic servant. Census for Bolton, Lancashire, in Elizabeth (64) is a widow living at 11 Augusta Street (5 rooms) with Annie (27) a cotton spinning minder. Elizabeth said she was married 44 years and had 10 children, 5 still living. Elizabeth died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Elizabeth s birth was registered as Elizabeth Rostron in 4q 1846 Bolton , mother s maiden name Rostron (on LancashireBMD, not given on gro.gov). In 1854 Mary Rostron married William Hensor (transcribed as Henson on FreeBMD and LancashireBMD). In 1861 Elizabeth Hensor (15), born in Bolton, is a cotton piecer living with parents William and Mary. This explains her variable maiden name on the registrations of her children (she used each name 5 times). On the 1911 census she claims to have been married 44 years, which is the time since her marriage though she had been a widow for over years. She also had 10 children, 5 living, thus claiming all of Peter s children. Her death is probably that registered in 1q 1920 Bolton 9c 460, aged

William s birth was registered in 1q 1867 Stockport 8a 27, mother s maiden name Hensor. Heis death was registered in 4q 1867 Stockport 8a 18, aged 0. Mary Ann Warburton. Mary Ann was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Mary Ann died in Stockport, Cheshire, in Mary Ann s birth was registered in 1q 1868 Stockport 8a 27, mother s maiden name Hensor. Her death was registered in 4q 1871 Stockport 8a 29. William Henry Warburton. William Henry was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in William Henry died in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, bef William s birth was registered in 4q 1869 Stockport 8a 39, mother s maiden name Hensor. His death registration has not been found, but he doesn t appear in the 1871 or subsequent censuses, and he must be one of the 5 children that Peter and Elizabeth report that have died in the 1911 census. Peter Warburton. Peter was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Peter died in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Peter s birth was registered in 3q 1871 Stockport 8a 33, mother s maiden name Rostron. His death was registered in 4q 1873 Stockport 8a 18. aged 2. v. Amelia Warburton. Amelia was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Amelia died in Farnworth, Lancashire, in Amelia s birth was registered in 4q 1873 Stockport 8a 31, mother s maiden name Rostron. Her death was registered in 2q 1961 Farnworth 10c 7, aged 87. George and Amelia could not be found in the 1939 Register. vi. In 1900 when Amelia was 27, she married George Francis Harrison in Bolton, St Bartholomew, Lancashire. The marriage was registered in 3q 1900 Bolton 8c 503. George Francis was born in Normanton, Yorkshire, abt George Francis died in Farnworth, Lancashire, on May Sarah Warburton. Sarah was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, on 18 Jul Census for Farnworth, Lancashire, in Sarah is a widow living at 145 Bradford Street with her married daughter Annie and her husband James. Sarah died in Sarah s birth was registered in 3q 1875 Stockport 8a 40, mother s maiden name Hensor. Her death is probably that registered in 3q 1947 Farnworth 10c 158, aged 72.

Mary Elizabeth was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, in Mary Elizabeth died in Bolton, Lancashire, in Mary Elizabeth s birth was registered in 4q 1879 Stockport 8a 41, mother s maiden name Rostron. Her death was registered in 1q 1888 Bolton 8c 271, aged 8. ix. William Warburton ( ) x. Annie Warburton. Annie was born in Reddish, Stockport, Cheshire, on 11 Mar Annie died in Annie s birth was registered in 2q 1884 Stockport 8a 34, mother s maiden name Rostron. Norman Blackburne, Purbeck Radar Site: Renie, Lady Adams, who died on 30 September2002 was the widow of Sir John Adams, a former Staff Member and Director-General of CERN. As a beneficiary of the CERN Pension Fund, she was a member of GAC and took an interest in its affairs. In 1998, Renie was elected as one of the Auditors of our Association, but was unable to take up this appointment because of ill health. In 1974, she founded the CERN Women's Club, which, in addition to its normal club activities, has since helped many newcomers' wives to settle into the Geneva area. She played an important role in supporting her husband in his contacts with CERN personnel at all levels, with the CERN Council and its committees, as well as with visiting dignitaries from all parts of the world.
