She went to school in the Grong Grong area and left school at the age of 14 in 1933 to work as a housemaid for the school teachers wife Mrs Lyle. At 15 Esma move on to work for Mrs Williams and at 16 for Mrs Atkinson. Shortly afterwards she went to work for Sid and Sis Meyer where she met the dashing "Ned" Meyer their nephew. After a short romance Ned and Esma were married in 1937, Esma was 18 years old. Their honeymoon was in Sydney and they set up home on Ned's farm "Boree View" near Grong Grong. Your first child Lawrence was born on 24 July 1938 followed three years later by Gloria on 9 November Shortly after Gloria's birth Esma and the children moved back to the Blackett family farm while Ned went to Tocumwall to work during the war. Phillip and Esma Meyers In 1945 the family moved to Boundary Rd Narrandera where Ned ran a air cargo transport business delivering to local businesses and farms from Wagga Wagga airport. Rex was born at Narrandera on Christmas Day In 1949 the family moved again, this time to a store and cafe they built at Forest Hill near the RAAF Base. A year later Garry was born in During this time Esma struggled with a young family and cooking and serving in the store. After a few years Ned sold the store and the family moved into Wagga Wagga 1954 where Ned worked at the PDF and later as an Estate Agent before finally settling into business again when he bought his first barbers shop. Ned wasn't one to stay in one place for long, and in 1956 moved to Sydney living initially in Cronulla then Carringbah, 9 Kanangur ave Gymea and then Paris Place, Miranda. Ned ran barber shops at Gymea and lastly Jannalli. During this period one by one all four children married and left home. Esma's first of eleven grandchildren was born in In 1972 Esma and Ned retired to Port Macquarie where they purchased a block of holiday units. After just 2 years they again moved back to Liverpool in August of Just three months later Ned passed away. Esma then moved to Ulladulla to be close to Gloria. There she met (with help from Gloria and Hermoine) and married Herman Peters. Later they moved to Wagga Wagga close to his family and her sister. Herman passed in xxxx and Esma moved to Condobillan to be close to Gloria. The family all celebrated her 80th Birthday near Wagga Wagga with a party where Esma danced and partied. She passed away in her sleep a short while later at her home in Condobillan.

General Notes: This is a transcript of handwritten notes Edith brought to the Blackett Family reunion 27 September 2015 at Grong Grong ==================== Richard Caunt was the engineer who brought the railway out to Narrandera and he was my grandfather. I was informed of this by my older sister who told me he thought that was where the railway would end. So he bought a small property at Grong Grong to raise his family on. My grandmother was Sarah (1) and they had twins that died and are buried near the weigh bridge before was there half way between the Kennedy shop and the railway station and platform. I believe Richard Caunt and Sarah my grandparents had sons Walter, Tom, Fred and Ernest. I knew Uncle Fred well he lived at Ardlethan and much later my husband David Richards and I moved to Ardlethan and lived in a house beside what was my Uncle Fred and Aunty Mary's home well after they had died and were

49 Page 48 buried at Grong Grong cemetery. My Uncle Tom Caunt lived at Grenfell with his wife Ruby and they had family of Una, Joy and Faith I never knew any sons of theirs. Uncle Tom Caunt my mother Winifred's brother worked as a wardsman at the Grenfell Hospital and mother and dad took us younger children to visit him at Grenfell which was a mining town. For some reason I remember the name of one of the mines which was "Homeward Bound". Thelma married Claude Basham, they lived at Young on a cherry farm. Una married Frank Beggs and lived at Fairfield in Sydney and Faith married Jack Walsh and lived nearby. We often (each year) visited with them. Joy lived at Grenfell not far from her parents Tom and Lucy and became Mrs Mantines. She had a son David and two daughters I think my memory of them is fading now Kathy was the girl I think. My mother Winifred Caunt married Jack Sheather at Grong Grong and they had three children my half brothers Alfred and Percy and sister Evelyn. Jack Sheather was killed by falling logs and later mother met and married Henry George Robert Middleton my father. They had a family of Christine, Robert (Bobbie), infant George died and is buried at Grongy cemetery beside them, Irene, Eddie and Malcolm Middleton. Richard and Sarah Caunt I believe had other children as well as Thomas and Frederick. I had an Uncle Ernest I believe he lived at Ganmain on Coolamon. I'm not real sure where and he has sons Ern and Keith. I think a Kevin belonged to one of them I've forgotten others I am sorry to say. But as a child I used to spend school holidays with Bertha Evans between Leeton and Griffith I can't remember who she belonged to. After the sons there came Topsy who had a daughter Rose and Rose married Walter Sheather at Grong Grong. I know of no others to Topsy. Then came Alice and Ada you know that Alice married Richard Blackett and was your grandmother. Ada married Walther Tickner and lived at 18 Coventry Rd Cabramatta where we also used to visit and they stayed at our home "Hillview" in Grong Grong in turn. Like Aunty Alice my Aunty Ada was a lovely lady who I loved dearly and her children were Walter, Esma and Bertha. Then came my mother Winifred Maude Caunt, Sheather and Middleton who I loved most of all and was devestated when she died unexpectantly after an operation when I was 16 and Malcolm was 13 I think it was. The floral tributes were many and showed just how much my mother Winifred was loved by all who knew her. Even now so many years later I still miss her. We were very close. We were all a very close knit family. We all had many happy times at my mothers and fathers home at Grong Grong. Bert Sheather and families, Dick and Alice Blackett and families gathered at our home on many occassions, especially when the sons and my brothers who were in the Army came home on leave and our parents had parties to welcome them and to send them off again. People now refer to them as the good old days. Some years later I married David Richards of "Billiah" same name as his father. While I was speaking of my times with the Blackett family and how my Uncle Dick used to carry me about on his shoulders. My husband Dave told me he liked my Uncle Dick also because he would give him threepence for cleaning his boots or shoes when Dick Blackett was shearing at "Billiah"! Later still when my Uncle and Aunty moved off the farm to reside in Narrandera we often paid them a visit and they welcomed us there to. That seems like such a long time ago now! Now that we are both over 80 and our memories are dimming. I nearly forgot Edna's name but thought hard and it came back to me with the image of her face in time to write it down on the otherside of this sheet of paper. Ada and Roy still live at 203 Fernleigh Rd Wagga Wagga. When members of the Blackett family came to them for holidays and it was always my great pleasure to welcome them to our tiny home. The day of Ada's funeral was the last time I saw Roy and Ada's daughter Jocelyn her last words to me was "I'll probably see you around" Everyone used to tell me that Esma and I resembled each other we both had Olive skin and dark hair. May and Cecil used to live in my mothers house (opposite the footy ground next to buttery) when they first married. I also remember when Irene and I were quite small Ces had a mechanical toy on a cord it was a tiny little black bull with horns when he pressed the button on the end of the cord the black bull would move forward and toss its head from side to side I was scared silly of it

50 Page 49 and would hide behind their lounge chair in the front room of the house that's about all I can remember. I thought the boomerang bend must be a cute name for Wrights Bend that I remembered but later thought about the block of land Col and Vera Reynolds used to have and thought this must be the Boomerang Bend where they often with others fishing and camping at times. We were asked down but never had the time mores the pity. Dropping into Grongy cemetery to pay or respects to deceased loved ones we saw a lovely young girl with her mates who later introduced herself to us, placing wildflowers we used to call (pee the beds) dandilions on all the graves, something I used to do myself when a child. She was such a lovely young person and told us she was Vera and Col Reynolds granddaughter. I told her we were related. I wasn't a bit surprised to find out she was a descendant of my Uncle Dick and Alice Blackett because I warmed to her straight away. Gloria returned to Kirrawee in Sydney with Harold Peters in 1972 living on Forest Rd near Kirawee High School for a short while before moving to Oak Rd above the Toy stoy run by her good friend June. They then moved in Aug 1973 to Ulladulla on the NSW south coast living in a Caravan behind Harold's sisters' property before moving to 27 Kendall Cres Burill Lake. In 1978 they moved to Powell Avenue in Ulladulla and got married and then after Dean's birth they moved into the house they built at Dowling Street in Ulladulla. A couple of years after Harold's death in 1984 Gloria sold the house to Harold's son Mick, married Harold's ex wifes ex husband Arthur Rogers and moved to the caravan park at Shoalhaven Heads in A few years later they moved out to Trundle to be near her daughter Kerry. They lived at 11 West St Trundle where Arthur died in Later that year Gloria married George Earle. When Kerry and her family moved back to Greenwell Point, Gloria and George moved to Condobolin, where she was joined by her mother Esma in 1994 after her second husband Herman passed away. Esma also passed while living in Condobolin in 1999 shortly after her 80th birthday. Through out this time personal faith in the Lord Jesus and her church family were a great source of strength and comfort. Shortly after her mothers passing, Gloria and George moved up to the Currumbin Valley to live in a caravan on her son's Garry's property. This was a time of great joy for Gloria as she was able to spend a great deal of time with her grandchildren Brandon and Millie. George passed on 7 Jan 2009 after a battle with bowel cancer. Gloria then moved in with her brother Rex and his wife Marlene at Forster Keys on the NSW North Coast. Here she met Paul Welch and they were married in Gloria suffered from poor health enduring shoulder and hip replacements and lung problems from many years as a smoker. In 2013 after a bout of pneumonia she contracted MRSA and took a long time to recover. Her response? Walk to the station, catch the train, and hope that Michael was still there hours later...he was! Michael's earliest memories were of 474 The Kingsway at Miranda, the property was owned by Michael's grandfather Roy, it included a huge L shaped block of land with a house and football field sized yard up front and down back offices and loading areas for his Air Cargo company "Moon's Transport". Michael remembers SP A0740 having free roam throughout the complex often playing with his Uncle Tom who was 3years older. One time Michael couldn't leap on to the transport dock as well as Tom and inadvertantly step onto a broken bottle with his left foot. His gran Joy was an ex military nurse during the war and she looked after him until he had the foot stitched up. He was about 5 years old at the time. The family stayed at Miranda until Michael was 7 years old, he remembers heading down with his mother Gloria and sister and brother to visit her brother Lawrence and the family in Melbourne driving acortina. They made it as far as Wangaratta before Gloria lost control on a bend, Michael got thrown out of the passenger side front door and rolled along the road getting glass embedded in his chest and back and splitting his lip. 73 Page 72 of his chest. When they returned Barrie and Gloria moved the family to Bligh St in Kirrawee. The house was next to the Royal National Park and many hours were spent exploring the bush with other kids in the neighbourhood. Michael remembers his dad travelling down to Wangaratta from Blight St to pickup the repaired Cortina. As children they were given an enormous amount of freedom and responsibility. They roamed throughout the neighbourhood without restriction, Michael remembers clearly walking with Kerry 6yrs old and Garry just 3yrs all the way to Sutherland in summer to go to the pool alone and return the same way. Unthinkable today. Michael was 10 years old when his parents separated, his mum Gloria came to the Kirrawee Public School and collected he and his sister Kerry and drove straight down to a farm at Old Junee owned by Stan Curran. The family spent a little over a year there before returning to Sydney with her new partner Harold Peters. They initially stayed for a while with friends of Harold's at Hunter St in Kirrawee, just down from the Kirrawee High School. Despite being just 100 yards from that school some quirk of boundaries meant that Michael could only enrol at Gymea High School where he started in The family moved ontop of the toy store where Gloria worked for her friend June in Railway St in the middle of Kirrawee shops. In August that year for the school holidays, Michael and his siblings were sent to his grandfather Roy's Caravan Park at Urunga in Northern NSW. They stayed in a caravan with his Aunty Leonie and cousins. While they were away Gloria and Harold moved down the NSW Coast to Ulladulla setting up home initially in a Caravan on his sister Nellies Holiday park. Michael had no chance to say goodbye to school friends and found himself travelling each day to Milton Central School, at that time the area had insufficient numbers for a High School. Other Moon families lived in the Milton-Ulladulla areabut it was only years later he discovered they were related if only distantly. After 4 months or so living in the caravan, Harold and Gloria purchased a small two bedroom holiday house at 27 Kendall Cres Burrill Lake. Harold put a double bunk on the verandah for Michael and Garry to sleep in. Michael lived their for 2 years before joining the Navy. In that time he became a member of the Burrill Lake Anglican Church and made a number of good friends. Employment prospects in Ulladulla were not high, Michael applied to join the Navy as a Cadet Midshipman towards the end of A math teacher provided one on one tutoring that proved critical in passing the entrance exams. The final interview with Captain Ian Broben and Professor Dykes didn't go well but despite this Michael was accepted and joined the 1976 Junior Entry on 19 Jan The next four years at the Royal Australian Naval College HMAS CRESWELL at Jervis Bay, NSW were difficult. Michael had a slight build and bullying was indemic much the same as with private schools that the majority of cadets came from. His one strength was his intellect and he was one of just two in his division to pass the Higher School Certificate and as a result of academic performance in his first degree year was promoted to Divisonal Midshipman of Phillip Division. During this time he met Nia Scamakas and they married after his final academics prior to undertaking is professional training as a supply officer in 1981 at HMAS Cerberus. Initial married life was most difficult, Michael's salary as an Acting Sub Lieutenant was less than that of a raw sailor recruit. In July 1981 Michael and Nia moved back to HMAS CRESWELL where Michael had several roles from paymaster to Captains Secretary.
