Description: (Describe resource and its major elements, include design, material, condition, alterations, size, setting, and boundaries) This two-story stucco building epitomizes the Mission Revival style the early-twentieth century, particularly its arching parapet wall, twin bell towers, and extensive arcades. The property is not visible from a public right--way, at the top a private drive. City records indicate that the building two stories, features an "H" shaped floor plan. The main entrance is approached by a broad staircase leading to an arched opening flanked by twin bell towers. Above the entrance is a tripartite focal window with classical trim and a triangular pediment. The ro over the entrance is marked by a curved parapet typical the Mission Revival style. The arched windows the main floor are echoed by stucco trim above. The ro the outer wings is red tile. The building and grounds were modified for reuse in the early 1980s. *P3b. Kusz (Continued from page 2, DPR23b, B10) Historical Background This property was originally called Oakwood Farm and was owned from by the Dexter family. In 1906, it was purchased by the Odd Fellows for $16,00. The Independent Order Odd Fellows California moved 10 elderly residents from an existing facility near Oroville to Saratoga in They occupied the new Mission Revival building which was dedicated on May 1, The formal gardens were designed by John McLaren, who was a member the Odd Fellows. The property also contains a barn and other outbuildings, which most likely are remnants from the original farm. Some these buildings and farm facilities were used by the retirees to run a working farm, helping to make the home more self-sufficient. The infirmary was built in 198, and 79 new rooms were added in 1981 by Barry Swenson Builder as the California Villa. The complex is known today as Saratoga Retirement Community. Architectural Context The 1912 was designed by San Francisco architect Ralph Warren Hart. Hart does not have an extensive career, having died cancer in 191 three years after this project. At the time his death, the Odd Fellows project was mentioned as one his "best efforts." Integrity The integrity this property cannot be determined for this survey. DPR 23L (1/9)
