4 FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE, LANDSCAPE & VISUAL ARTS UWA ARCHITECTURAL RESEARCH AND INVESTIGATION ELECTIVE UNIT ARCT st Semester 2007 Dr Ingrid van Bremen Introduction. This unit is provided for students who have an interest in architectural history and/or conservation, and wish to further develop the architectural research methods and skills required in these fields of study. Outcomes. Content. This unit aims to further develop: architectural skills in research and investigation of historic structures; recognition of context buildings in their time and place; and an understanding of traditional building construction. These are typical prerequisites for further study in architectural history and for specialising in conservation practice. The focus will be on case studies of existing buildings and fieldwork exercises. 1. Research and investigation techniques: finding and reading documentary sources; investigating and recording physical evidence on site; undertaking surveys of physical condition. 2. Recognising the context: An introduction to the evolution of design and construction in Western Australia as an essential background for further research and assessing the significance of particular buildings and places in this State. 3. Understanding traditional construction systems and materials: how are they are put together and how they perform over time. Assessment. The assessment involves one major assignment addressing the research and investigation of a building, putting it into its historic context, and carrying out a survey of its physical condition. The work will be done in stages through tutorial and site exercises and submitted as a final report at the end of the semester. It will be assessed on the level of knowledge and understanding demonstrated in each of the three topics and on the clarity of presentation. Key References. Pitt Morison M. & White J. 5 EXPECTATIONS AND CONTACT DETAILS Prerequisites This unit works on the expectation that students will have a background in design and construction to the third year level, basic research and report writing skills, and an interest in further developing skills in architectural research and investigation. Attendance Attendance at all scheduled lectures, tutorial sessions and site visits is essential for gathering the information and experience required to successfully complete the assignment. Communication Students are advised by the Faculty that communication may occur by , and all students should ensure that they: a) activate their Pheme account and student account b) check their account regularly (at least weekly) c) communicate with University staff ONLY through their UWA account.
