3 OVERVIEW Project created by: Mrs. Anne-Marie Werner Initiated in 2003 Supported by the University of Zurich Free access: Continually expanded and updated Main GUI & data language, so far: German Search results can be collected online and exported as PDF files / 3

4 THEMATIC SCOPE Information on any conceivable topic relating to cultural / intellectual / religious forms of contact and exchange between Main thematic areas: missionary history, general and disciplinary history (history of sinology), travel and legation accounts, German language literature, philosophy, art, and history of science / 4

6 SOURCES Thorough utilisation of printed bibliographies and reference works Regular checking of current printed publications on a particular topic or author Archival materials (ca. 100 archives accessed so far; transcription, edition of acquired data) Use of bibliographies, library catalogues, source materials, scholarship available online Support from specialists worldwide Direct collection of sinological CVs through correspondance / 6

8 TECHNICAL BACKGROUND three components: database, online application, administrative application MySQL relational database, ca. 40 tables three main organizing elements: chronology entries, documents (bibliography), entities (persons) quintessentially open, i.e. it is possible to host additional (but separated) projects within the same installation / 8

9 TECHNICAL BACKGROUND (c td.) Administrative application runs as Javascript with a GUI to enter data, and for certain admin tasks Online application written in Java, as a web application Running on Tomcat (open-source application server) / 9

11 COMPILATION PROCESS Selection of a particular author or scholar Systematic collection of biographical information, primary and secondary sources by/about him/her Complete browsing/excerption of all pertinent materials Cross-checking of data and factual information (e.g. geographical or personal names in non-standard transcriptions etc.) Chronological rearrangement of the data Checking for availability of Chinese translations / 11
