1 Descendants of Georg Carl Willrich Generation No Georg Carl 3 Willrich (Wilhelm Christian 2, Johann August 1 ) was born January 19, 1798 in Uelzen, Germany, and died April 30, 1876 in Bluff, Fayette, TX. He married (1) Margarethe Caroline Rubenack. She died Unknown. He married (2) Gertrud Elisabeth Bostelmann October 14, 1821 in Uelzen, Germany. She was born December 12, 1802 in Luneberg, Germany, and died February 05, 1838 in Uelzen, Germany. He married (3) Elise Margarethe Kuckuck December 12, 1839 in Luneberg, Germany, daughter of George Ludwig Kuckuck. She was born April 27, 1808 in Hannover, Germany, and died October 16, 1907 in Bluff, Fayette, TX. Notes for Elise Margarethe Kuckuck: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 24 OCT 1907 MRS. ELISE WILLRICH The subject of this sketch who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emil Koehler, last Wednesday night, 16 October 1907, was one of the old landmarks of Fayette County. For several years the good old lady was blind, and an invalid, during which time her devoted daughter, Mrs. Koehler, administered to her every want and comfort. Death came to her peacefully, and amid the pleasant surroundings of a cheerful home. Her last years were one continual reign of darkness, through which only one ray of light crept - the kind devotion of her relatives and the hope that the allwise Creator would soon call her home. The summons came Wednesday and she responded cheerfully. She had attained the ripe old age of ninety-nine years, 5 mons and 19 days. Mrs. Willrich, who was the only daughter of Major Kukuk of the English Army, Hanovarian Division, was born at Hanover, Germany on April 27, She was married to Judge Georg K. Willrich and four children, two sons and two daughters, viz: Prof. Julius Willrich who resides at Bluff; Mrs. Gustav Groos of San Antonio, Otto Willrich and Mrs. Emil Koehler of Bluff, were the fruits of this union. The family came to Texas in 1847 and located in Fayette County when the whole county was still in its infancy. Not only were her cares confined to the raising of her own children, but also to the raising of six children of her husband by a former marriage. Of these all have died except Mrs. Keuffel, who lives in Germany, and Mrs. John Vogt of O'Quinn. Beside her children, themselves grandparents, she leaves to mourn her loss twenty-three grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. The funeral took place Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the home of Emil Koehler, and the remains were followed to the Lewis Cemetery by a very large number of relatives and friends who loved and honored her. May her rest be peaceful. Child of Georg Willrich and Margarethe Rubenack is: + 2 i. Notes for Julius Ludwig George Willrich: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 13 FEB 1919 JULIUS WILLRICH OLD CITIZEN RESPONDS Death Comes Peacefully to Prof. JULIUS WILLRICH Tuesday night without warning, the grim reaper claimed another of our oldest citizens, when Prof. Julius Willrich, aged seventy-eight years passed to his reward February 11, He was born December 31, Not ill but ever active and about as was his custom, few could believe the report when it was circulated early Wednesday morning. Prof. Willrich, prominently connected and for nearly sixty years a citizen of this county, was of a quiet and friend-making disposition, ably educated and proficient to his calling - school teacher, which he pursued for many years. At one time he taught at the Teutonia School which was near Mt. Eliza where he lived with his parents, Georg K. and Elise (Kukuk) Willrich for a time. In this country when the North and South struggled for supremacy, he served as a confederate soldier, retaining this dignified bearing until the end. From the home of Mrs. Elise Mensing in this city the funeral will be held today, Thursday, afternoon at two o'clock with interment at the Cedar Cemetery. Friends, relatives and acquaintances are asked to attend. Prof. Willrich leaves many relatives and friends to mourn his departure. The Latins and the Prairie Blume Society By Donna Green The Latins were a group of young people who lived in and around the Bluff area of Fayette County during the time period. They were so named because of their education and cultural background. They had emigrated from the small principalities of Central Europe in order to give their children better opportunities. These people hoped to find in Texas the democracy and freedom that had been denied them in Europe. Many of the Latins were political refugees who had taken part in the republican revolution of The Latins were proud of their culture and education and often found it difficult to adjust to their new rural surroundings. One young woman wrote to a friend in Europe complaining that there was little mental stimulation in the daily life on a farm. She wrote that each day suffered from "eternal sameness" and was "painfully monotonous." In her desire to learn she often spent countless hours studying alone. About 1857 things changed for the young Latins of the area when a local German poet, Johannes Romberg, formed the Prairie Blume Literary Society at Black Jack Springs. It was one of the first literary societies in Texas. The society published a journal featuring literary contributions from its members. The journal was named the "Prairie Blume" because the prairie flower symbolized prose and poetry. The young Latins anxiously awaited every meeting of the society. It was nothing for them to ride fourteen miles on horseback just to attend one of the meetings. They were much more formal than is customary today. Julius Willrich would often ride to a member's garden gate and invite them to the next meeting with these words: "I have the honor to invite you to the next meeting of the Prairie Blume at our house." Various families took turns in entertaining the group of young scholars. At meetings intellectual games were often played followed by a flute solo or a violin concerto. The young Latins discussed many subjects including the political and social conditions in the world. They would often spend hours philosophizing over books they had read or writing down these thoughts to contribute to the next issue of the journal. Today some copies of the "Prairie Blume" still exist. At the outbreak of the Civil War the activities of the organization declined as many members joined the military. After a few more years the society was discontinued entirely. 2

Notes for Julia Dencker: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 27 OCT 1932 JULIA DENCKER SUCCUMS Miss Julia Dencker, aged 67 years, a life-long resident of Cedar, this county, died at the La Grange Hospital, 25 October 1932, Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after an illness of only a few days. Miss Dencker was the last survivor of the family of Dr. and Mrs. Friedrich Dencker, who in the early days, were among the most respected people of this county. Her mother died when she was 14 years old, her father died 36 years ago. The happiest days of her life were her childhood days, she frequently referred to them as such. Her interested friends and relatives had suggested that she remove to La Grange in order to be near her, but no, she cherished the memories of the long ago, remained on the farm left her by her parents, enjoyed raising fine stock, threated them humane and thus spent her last days, not in the old folks home, but in a small cottage erected on the highway several years ago. Miss Dencker was an educated woman, fond of music, of good voice, an excellent pianist. Neighbor's children ever found a welcome at her home. She was born 21 August The family consisted of Dr. and Mrs. Dencker and four daughters. Louise died in infancy; two, Mrs. Gertrude Bauch and Mrs. Minna Bauch, each left two sons, Carl and Rudolph Bauch of Goliad, Fritz and Willie Bauch of Mexico and California, who with their families are her only survivors. The funeral will be held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Knigge in La Grange, Thursday afternoon at 1:30 4

5 o'clock; interment will be at the Cedar Cemetery. 11. Franziska Sophie Eleonore 4 Willrich (Georg Carl 3, Wilhelm Christian 2, Johann August 1 ) was born October 17, 1835 in Uelzen, Germany, and died April 24, 1931 in Bluff, Fayette, TX. She married John R Vogt January 28, 1857 in Fayette County, Texas. He was born May 09, 1832 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, and died September 14, 1909 in Bluff, Fayette, TX. Notes for Franziska Sophie Eleonore Willrich: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 30 APR 1931 FRANZISKA VOGT Grandmother Vogt Passes Away Reaching the age of 95 years, 5 months and 7 days, Grandmother Franziska Vogt, one of our most interesting and esteemed citizens closes the last chapter of her life 24 April She was born 17 October 1835 in Germany and came to Fayette County with her mother, Mrs. Geo. Willrich, and sisters and brothers in the year Her father, a prominent judge in the old country, had come over the year before to locate a home for the family. Texas gave three hundred acres of land to every man with family who settled upon its soil, land seemingly untouched by man, with wild beasts and snakes roaming at will. They went through many trials during these days, and to hear grandmother recite some of the history of her younger days was interesting. In 1928 the Journal reproduced an account entitled: "Black Beans of Death", a story told by the subject of this sketch on her 93rd birthday anniversary, which had been published in the Austin American. She recalled the solemn ceremony of 1848, when a child of thirteen she rode horseback to the site where the Mier prisoners of war were reburied with honor and praise, on Kreische's Bluff. After the death of her husband, John Vogt, 22 years ago, she continued to live at the old home near O'Quinn, where her youngest son, Julius, now resides. About ten years ago she came to live in her declining years with her daughter Mrs. E. Knigge of this city. It may truly be said of her, she won the love of all with whom she came in contact, and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Vogt was the mother of eight children, five sons and three daughters, of whom three preceded her in death: Mrs. H. Schroeder of this city and Geo. Vogt of Schulenburg; Hans died at the age of 8 years. The living are: E.R. Vogt of Schulenburg, Mrs. Fritz Nollkamper, Mrs. E. Knigge and Fritz Vogt of this city and Julius Vogt of O'Quinn. Twenty-three grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, besides two step sisters, Mrs. Anna Gross of San Antonio and Mrs. Louise Koehler of this city are among the sorrowing relatives. Interment took place at the Cedar Cemetery Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. C.O. Boatman officiating. Notes for John R Vogt: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 23 SEP 1909 IN MEMORY OF JOHN VOGT When the visit of the death angel was made to the home of John Vogt, near Cedar, last week, Tuesday, September 14, 1909, the spirit of one of Fayette County's oldest and most beloved citizens journeyed to the far-off home to dwell with the great majority who have gone before. The entire vicinage where he was most highly respected and revered was wrapt in sorrow and heartfelt expressions of regret were frequent. John Vogt was born in Schleswig- Holstein, Germany May 9, 1832, and when a lad of seventeen years emigrated to America, landing at Galveston August 31, His journey to Fayette was made in the primitive manner of that time, by ox-wagon. For several years after his arrival he earned his living by daily labor. In the year 1857, January 13, he was united in marriage with Miss Franziska Willrich, one of the then popular belles of Cedar. The ceremony occured at the home of Dr. Dencker, which home still stands and shelters a daughter of the doctor. After one year's residence at this place, the family removed to the home which was the deceased's until the final call was made and he passed out of the knowledge of earthly matters. The union was blessed with eight children, one of whom died many years ago. The seven living are: Mrs. Hermann Schroeder of Cedar, E. R. Vogt of Schulenburg, Mrs. Fritz Nollkamper of Swiss Alp, George Vogt of Swiss Alp, Fritz Vogt of La Grange, John Vogt of Cedar and Mrs. Ernst Knigge of La Grange. Seventeen grand children and one great grandchild also mourn the loss of good old Papa Vogt. Wednesday morning of last week the funeral was held from the old homestead and the remains, followed by an immense cortege, were conveyed to the Cedar Cemetery and laid to rest with beautiful and impressive 5

6 ceremonies. Rev. Kern, pastor of the Lutheran Church at Swiss Alp, spoke of the good qualities of the deceased and commited his spirit to the care of the Maker. Judge Willrich, who is related to the family, also spoke at the grave dwelling on the ennobling life led by his relative. Mr. Vogt was one of the Texas Confederate soldiers. At the last reunion, held here in May, he was unable to take part. At a former reunion the remaining soldiers of what once was a strong company were photographed. There were not many present but the picture shows the faces of determined men. It was this picture the writer was shown when he last visited the home of the deceased. He cherished this with the pride characteristic of the grizzeled old veterans of today, who, in their youth, shouldered their muskets in a cause they believed right. It was at that time I learned to know more of Grandpa Vogt and to love him for his goodness of heart and his consideration for the wants and rights of others. He is gone now sleeping that long sleep that knows no awakening, but which is recorded as being the rest from which we will all arise some sweet day to share the blessing of the Messiah. A. She was born November 23, 1847, and died January 26, Notes for August George Otto Willrich: LA GRANGE JOURNAL 14 FEB 1929 THE OLD OAK WITHERS AND DIES "As sturdy as the oak" - until the heavy hand falls and response is inevitable. So "Come unto Me all ye who are weary, and heavy laden, and I will give thee rest." OTTO WILLRICH, SR. Born in Elsen, Hanover, Ger. February 19, 1845 Died at La Grange, Texas February 13,

7 Aged 83 yrs, 11 mos, 24 dys In paying a tribute to this good citizen I seek not to worm my way into the good graces of those who were his dependents, as children, I refer to the man whom I have known since my early youth; I use the honorable name "man" because, in the circle in which he lived he had the respect of every one who knew him, and never hesitated to extend to me the right hand of fellowship. To have known him is one of the precious assets of mine. He belonged to that class of citizens who have made the world a better place in which to live; the legacy he leaves to his children is not measured according to his holdings, but in the standard of worth, which prompts those who knew him well, to say: "This was a man." He scorned to do a dishonest act, and was a living example of the son who believed it a valuable privilege to uphold, without stain - by act or speech - the name of his ancestors. From his home, established when he took unto himself a mate, there was sent out a family of children who looked upon the father as an example to emulate. Otto Willrich was a citizen who craved no honors; in his retiring manner of living, not alone or unto himself; the doors were opened by the magic word of welcome to all who cared to enter. And with endowment the Creator gives to the sturdy oak of the forest, to withstand the ravages of time and the vicissitudes of life, he bore, with fortitude, whatever affliction there was visited upon him, realizing that the lot of all men, like the cross to the Savior, must be borne. He accepted these edicts as they were tendered. And when the Great Reader, of the Chart of Life, wrote the edict, January 26, 1922, that a companionship of 52 years should cease, he bowed in acquescence, and saw Mama Anna, his wife, start on her celestial journey. All partings are painful, he lived on, patiently awaiting the hour when his name would be announced; yet he manifested his usual interest in all things, and stood ready, like the soldier of honor, to obey a command. The world will not stop moving because he is gone; the world will not be changed, because of his going; there are too many of us still here, but this vacancy his going has caused, will be sacred to those who bear his descendency, and it will be an inspiration to them, because, Otto Willrich, Sr., was a worthy trustee, a guardian of the name entrusted to him. He has passed to his sons and daughters, the sword of his father, of his grand-sires, and thereon is no tarnish. He was a credit to his family name. The loving prefix of father, following that of a son and grandson, remains as a memory in the circle in which he lived, and in the minds of relative and friend. I sincerely regret that my enfeebled condition prevented my attendance upon the hour when they carried him to his resting place. I am glad it was my privilege to have known him, I would have been happier to have been more closely associated with him. The sympathy, at the loss of a father and brother, is expressed to his sisters, and to his children. B.F. HARIGEL Otto Willrich was brought to America by his parents when still an infant - only one year old. His parents settled in the old Bluff section and took up farming. When Otto reached his fourteenth year, he was taken back to Germany, in order that he might receive the advantage of the tutelage of earned educations at his birthplace, and for four years he remained in Germany. Returning to Fayette County as a young man, and to the parental home, he entered as a fanner and in the year 1870, was united in marriage with Miss Anna Kloss who made him a good wife, became the mother of his children and helped to rear a very interesting family. Eleven children blessed this union; the living children are: Mrs. V.C. Sladczyk, Otto Willrich, Jr., and Mrs. Augusta, wife of Geo. Schaefer - La Grange; Geo. Willrich, farmer near La Grange, H. 10 By F. Lotto Pages Published Schulenberg, Texas September 1902 Geo. Huebner This country has furnished numerous instances where men with only limited education, but with practical sense have risen to the brightest walks of life. Not schooling, but practical common sense is the key to success. Geo. Huebner is and eminently practical man. During his early years as a teamster he had the chance to become acquainted with the ways of life. His shrewd observation developed in him a sound judgement. On the road, from his fellowmen and from nature, but not from books, he gathered his information. His knowledge comes from the first source. And he not only has a fund of practical knowledge, but also knows how to express his views with energy and clearness. He is an interesting talker. The writer has heard with deep interest his views on road building and road improvement and he must confess that he never has heard sounder views on this subject than those expressed by Geo. Huebner. But not only on this, he has sound views on almost any question. From 1898 to 1900 he served one term as county commissioner. When he retired from this office, declining to stand reelection, it was the general verdict of the people that they never had had a better commissioner. The writer agrees fully to their verdict and is of the opinion that a better man, a man with sounder judgement and greater common sense can not be found for that office. Geo. Huebner was born at the Bluff settlement August 16, His parents were John A. and Pauline (Willrich) Huebner. They came to this country from Germany while quite young. His father came from Bavaria, and first immigrated to Texas in 1836, but on account of Indian raids he went back to New Orleans without settling in Texas. He returned in the early 40's and then settled in the Bluff settlement where both parents remained till their death. Geo. Huebner worked with his father on the farm, went to school and drove team. He acquired quite a reputation as one of the most skillful teamsters of the county, for it required skill to handle six to eight teams of oxen. After the war, he married Miss Lisette Warnken, the daughter of a prominent old settler at the Bluff. This union was blessed with six children: Louis, Helene, Annie, George, Ellie, and Augusta. George Huebner is a prominent successful farmer of the county. From 1898 to 1900 he served the county as commissioner which office he filled with great efficiency to the satisfaction of the people. Children of George Huebner and Lisette Warnken are: 99 i. Louis 6 Huebner, born April 14, 1877 in LaGrange, Fayette, TX; died December 20, 1947 in LaGrange, Fayette, TX. She was born July 09, 1861 in Fayette County, Texas, and died August 01, 1961 in Schulenburg, Fayette, TX. Notes for Ernst Rudolf Vogt: THE SCHULENBURG STICKER 29 FEB 1940 E. R. VOGT FAYETTE CO. RESIDENT BURIED MONDAY Mr. E. Rudolph Vogt passed away at the family residence here on Sunday, February 25, Death resulted from an injured hip and leg which was hurt when he fell about two months ago. Worn and weak from an active life, his frail body could not withstand the severe pain. "Judge" Vogt, as he was called by most of the people in the community, was born October 15, 1859, near Cedar, in Fayette County. He received his early education in the Fayette County schools and as a young man took private lessons in Civil Engineering. When he had reached the age of nineteen years, he started out to work as a surveyor and for 60 years he followed that profession. On December 6, 1883, he won the hand of Miss Anna Nollkamper, who has lived through these many years at his side. The wedding ceremony took place in Cedar. In the year 1888, he was elected to the office of county surveyor and he held that office for 50 years. For the past 38 years he had been justice of the peace in this precinct and during that term of years has had only two opponents. In the year 1918, when the American Party was so strong, he was the only county official who was re-elected to office. In his years of work as surveyor, he covered practically the whole of the State of Texas and as far as we know today, no lawsuits have ever occured over any of the surveys he made. "Judge" Vogt not only was active in the above mentioned professions, but he was one of the first persons to help organize the First National Bank of Schulenburg in He was one of the first to help organize the Bluff Mutual Fire Insurance Company, which is over fifty years old and still going strong. He wrote the by-laws, rules and regulations of that group of farmers. He was the man who helped establish all of the mail routes out of Schulenburg. There were many other projects which live on through this man, who helped found them, who is not with us any more. For the past 34 years he has made his home in the city of Schulenburg. One of the expressions which we have heard many times within the past few days is that: "He was fair, impartial and just in all of his dealings." No finer tribute can be given to a man. It will not seem the same here in Schulenburg to not see the "Squire" come down the street with his cane in his hand and his pipe in his mouth. He will be missed by his many friends who have gathered for years on Saturday afternoon to play a few games of dominoes. His wise council, given freely, to all those who need sound advice, will go begging. Our, and every other community, needs more men who will live the life of Mr. Vogt. He was a wonderful father and husband and did his all to make his family happy and contented. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Charter member of the Schulenburg Lutheran Church. Funeral services were held from the family residence on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the Cedar Cemetery. Rev.Hornung and Rev. Kuretsch officiated at the last sad rites. Choirs of both the Lutheran and Methodist Churches sang the hymns. A large number of people from this and surrounding areas came to pay their last respects. Floral bouquets were numerous and very beautiful. 12

13 Surviving to mourn his passing are: his wife Mrs. Annie Vogt; three sons: Charlie, Emil and Otto; two grandchildren: Charlie Vogt, Jr. and John Carrol Vogt; two brothers: Fritz Vogt of La Grange and Julius Vogt of Cedar, and two sisters, Mrs. Fritz Nollkamper and Mrs. Ernest Knigge, both of La Grange. Rudolph Vogt, who for many years was county surveyor and justice of the peace of the Schulenburg precinct. The couple moved to Schulenburg in 1894 and lived here since that time.
