FEDERAL PROGRAMS I was asked to co-direct a grant/program from the U.S. Department of Education for Spanish Language Training for Secondary Teachers ($63,410) that
17 Schnepf 17 would bring high school teachers from all parts of Alabama to participate in a sixweek total immersion program. I was asked to serve as co-director (when the original director unexpectedly accepted another position) and to take charge of all the logistical details as well as to review the overall philosophical approach that we had proposed. The Program was, of course, done all in Spanish and we were often with the students from 8:00 AM until 10:00 PM. I am very glad to report that the program was a great success and that I still hear from many of the participants The NEH requested that I review a proposal for a research conference whose aim was to study Zorrilla s play, Don Juan Tenorio, within the parameters of Spanish Romanticism and to discuss the impact of the Don Juan theme on Spanish society ($55,726). I carefully studied the project and found it to be well thought out, challenging, and logistically sound. Moreover, the established scholars who had agreed to participate (i.e., Donald Shaw and David Gies) are highly regarded intellectuals. I gave the program a rating of excellent Havana, Cuba.
