2 ELCOME Dear Friends and Colleagues, History of Helsinki begins in 1550 when Sweden s King Gustaf Vasa founded the city on the mouth of Vantaanjoki River. His ambition was to compete with Tallinn over Baltic Sea trade. In spite of all efforts, Tallinn held its position as a major Baltic trade junction while Helsinki remained as a provincial town on a cape sticking into the Gulf of Finland. Little by little the city grew larger. Building of the huge sea fortress Suomenlinna just outside the city from 1748 onwards helped, as did moving the capital of Grand Duchy of Finland from Turku to Helsinki in In 1890 Helsinki became a city of culture as the building of the National Archives (then State Archives) was finished. It was and is the oldest archival building in Nordic countries and within the Russian Empire. Today Helsinki is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe. In 2014 it was awarded City of Design status as part of the Creative Cities Network established by UNESCO. Helsinki Airport is best connected in Northern Europe and serves as a significant air traffic hub between Europe and Asia. In these surroundings we are now about to begin the most northern ICARUS meeting so far. Over the next couple of days there will be many discussions over new kinds of archival work, meetings within our network and with companies close to us. Also some tastings of Finnish cuisine and culture will be introduced including the archives sauna a facility that completes any archive. We are glad and honored to host this inspiring and unique event. Sincerely welcome to Helsinki and into the National Archives of Finland!
