1 ADFAS Mornington Peninsula Inc : Newsletter Volume 16 Number 8 October 2018 Dear Members, LAUNCH OF 2019 PROGRAM: 2019 promises to be an exceptional year given the excellent lecturers and their topics. The first two lecturers will be giving their first hand experiences of their personal involvement in the lecture topics. Of particular note is the 15 March lecture by the architect responsible for finishing the Sagrada Familia Basilica as Gaudi intended. The year will conclude with a lecture by the delightful, enthusiastic and generous Susannah Fullerton OAM, who is widely known and much admired. Brochures will be available to confirm dates, the nine lecturers and their topics. A visual presentation of this information will also be screened from 5pm and after the lecture. In addition, a summary sheet will be distributed for sticking on your refrigerator door! FEES 2019: The committee is delighted to announce that favourable outcomes for this year enable fees for 2019 to remain as in This result has been made possible as your support for our Society has been strong and enthusiastic, especially in promoting the Society to new members. COMPLIMENTARY ARTLIFE MAGAZINE: Free copies will be available for collection at the sign in table at the 12 October lecture. BELEURA HOUSE AND GARDEN has a remarkable new Grand piano created by Stuart & Sons, the last remaining piano makers in Australia who are located in Tumut NSW. Congratulations to those at Beleura House for their pursuit of excellence in the commissioning of this world first, especially crafted 108 key concert Grand piano with a 9 octave range. Anthony Knight OAM has described this instrument as, astounding in range and technical capability, as well as in its sheer beauty and size. YOUNG ARTS PROGRAM: The play by Dromana Secondary College will be performed on Friday 2 November at 7.30pm and Saturday 3 November at 4pm following two earlier school performances. If you wish to attend please book with the College. WELCOME TO OUR NEW COMMITTEE MEMBER: It is a delight to welcome Jan Cleveland to the Committee as the important Beleura House and Gardens representative. Jan is replacing Ingrid Hoffmann who has served our Society well for some years and has facilitated the excellent relationship we enjoy with Beleura House. 2 FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER LECTURE: 5.30 pm Peninsula Community Theatre Dr Sophie Oosterwijk Rembrandt s Vision: Dutch Heritage Painting in the 17 th Century A Dutch native, Dr Sophie Oosterwijk is fluent in Dutch (as well as in English, French and German), and knows the Netherlands and Belgium intimately. She is particularly interested in painting and sculpture, including tomb monuments, from the medieval period to the Baroque and beyond, and in the social and cultural context. Dr Oosterwijk has a PhD in Art History (Leicester) and in English History (Leiden). She specialises in portraiture and representation, death and commemoration in European Art. Medieval, and Dutch seventeenth century art are also areas of her other teaching interests. Sophie has published widely, including two co-edited volumes on the production of tomb sculpture in England and Wales in the fourteenth century (2010) and on the danse macabre in Medieval and early modern Europe(2011). She is co-editor of the journal Church Monuments and also collaborated on the Dutch Medieval Memoria Online database which was launched in History Painting was a special genre in the Dutch Republic during the Golden Age. Rembrandt trained in history painting in Amsterdam but developed his own interpretations of Biblical stories with emphasis on human drama and the human figure. Sophie Oosterwijk s lecture explores the concept that not all Rembrandt s contemporaries appreciated his approach. Volume 16 Number 8 October

Friday 19 October The Automobile Museum A newly opened addition to Beleura House, the Automobile Museum Tour, showcases the meticulously restored Mark IV Jaguar, purchased by John Tallis in This also includes a shortened garden tour. Thursday 25 October Garden Tour A tour of the gardens at Beleura, led by Kate Philip, explores this ever evolving slice of paradise building on the inspiration of John Tallis.
