3 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst DFDS Ferry Terminal Dampfærgevej 30 DK-2100 Copenhagen Denmark l This is a ferry passenger terminal for routes to, Gdansk and Poland It can handle 3 ferries, 2000 passengers and 400 cars, or 130 trucks The building is a long glass-clad tube, with 2 stories, raised from the ground on heavy pillars in black concrete The glass elements have a varied transparency and give the indoor a significant lightweight character The new facility is designed to integrate all passenger-related activities in one long building At many ferry terminals, passengers have to buy their ticket at a ticket center and then walk down ramps and long corridors to get to the ship Visiting this facility is kind of a strange happening, when large groups of travelers walk from one way to the other, either leaving or arriving The waiting areas are simply a broadened part of the corridor The movement, lining up and waiting happens in the same stretched space At the exterior they are clearly visible as protruding boxes and have a distinct alu-clad façade photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is public! m² 3XN Port of Copenhagen boeboe Every day 09:00-17:00 h The Port of Copenhagen is conveniently located close to the S train stations Østerport and Nordhavn Or take bus 26 from the city centre 3

4 photo: Kim Muller photo: Kim Muller Fyrstikkterrassen Svovelstikka Oslo Fyrstikkterrassen is an office and multipurpose commercial building located east of the center of Oslo, in an area dominated by building expansion and a post war conflict of architectural styles The client wanted an efficient, leaseable building with a "sellable" visual image The programme included commercial areas for functions not then known, which is reflected in the juxtaposition of the volumes of the building The base contains multipurpose areas with the possibility of double height spaces whereas the blocks contains office functions The project is on an overall town plan level contextual, with clear references to the surroundings buildings, despite its independent architectural expression The defined base of the building strengthens the urban qualities through its direct reference to the surrounding street pattern, and the stepped section of the volumes reflect and link the varying heights of the surrounding buildings photo: Kim Muller Public access unknown! m² Kristin Jarmund Arkitekter Nielsen-Nielsen KristinJarmundArkitekter Located in the Helsfyr area of Oslo 4

5 photo: Snøhetta photo: Statsbygg Opera House Kirsten Flagstads plass 1 N-0150 Oslo The New Opera House has 3 main parts First the 'Front of House': the public areas located in the building s western section These include the main foyer, and 2 auditoriums The foyer is a grand, open room with a variety of lighting conditions and views to the surroundings This space is characterised by simple use of materials and minimal details Secondly the Back of House : these are the production areas of the building with workshops, storage areas, rehearsal rooms etc The architecture is functionally appropriate, the exterior façade is composed of metal panels Last part is the Roofscape: describes the building s monumental character The horizontal and sloping plane of the roof provides the opera with an unusually dramatic expression, quite different from the surrounding buildings Clad in white stone, and it s details will provide a holistic and symbolic character to the building while also allowing for a variety of experiences as one moves past it photo: Snøhetta Project is public! m² Snøhetta Statsbygg Snohetta 5

6 photo: Nils Petter Dale photo: Nils Petter Dale Oslo School of ure Maridalsveien Oslo The new Oslo School of ure is based in an existing building from 1938 It's part of a larger effort to revitalise this former industrial area for education-related use The long-term aim is a campus for arts education along the riverbank The project won an open architectural competition in 1998 The exterior of the existing building has a conservation status The architects have kept the block open towards the river, and combined the new programme with the logic of the existing building together with the surroundings in one spatial sequence An access court has been cut out of the existing 1st floor slab, marking the entrance and bringing daylight in to the ground floor foyer A strip has been cut out of the existing slab along the inside of the existing building, bringing daylight to the surrounding functions A simple U-shaped circulation zone is established along the strip A new string of teaching rooms completes the U and forms a bridge across the entrance area photo: Nils Petter Dale Project is public! 2001 Structural engineer Landscape designer Jarmund Vigsnæs s AS Frederiksen Grindaker as Jarmund_Vigsnaes_s located by the Akerselva River in the eastern part of Oslo 6
