4 URBAN LABORATORY MEGA PROJECTS Urban Laboratory and Aalto Dialogue will be held together in the period I (students from Dialogue Course and students from Urban Laboratory who attend half course will get 5 credits). Urban Laboratory will continue separately in the period II. Joint Lectures between Urban Laboratory, Aalto Dialogue and Possible Cities. Lectures are given from the faculty teachers and invited speakers Concept of public and semi-private spaces, commercialization of public spaces, the usage of public spaces, how people change habits Experiential level of urban structures and space Mega shopping mall policies in the Uusimaa Regional Plan Retail planning and solutions Socio-economic impacts of mega-projects Cross-border infrastructures and mega-projects Helsinki City competitiveness Policy-making decisions within mega-projects 4

5 URBAN LABORATORY MEGA PROJECTS The megaproject developments are still positioning cities and metropolitan regions on a global scale. 6 URBAN LABORATORY MEGA PROJECTS Megaprojects have provided new urban forms and spatial patterns, however, there is still a little local awareness of how these megaprojects are influential in: re-shaping urban functions, provision of services, urban mobility, daily habits of people, usage perception of public and semi-private spaces. The purpose of the Urban Laboratory and Aalto Dialogue is to investigate the socio-spatial effects of mega shopping malls within the urban structure. In the second period, the Urban Laboratory also aims to provide an understanding of the institutional, political and economic context of megaprojects (including mega infrastructures). 6

7 Urban Lab and Aalto Dialogue will take other shopping malls as examples, such as the biggest shopping mall in Europe, Il Centro, and other Finnish shopping malls, such as Heikintori, Oravannahkatori and corner shops in Munkkivuori-Munkkiniemi. 10 URBAN LABORATORY ASSIGNMENTS The students are working within interdisciplinary groups of students (max 4) Students will conduct qualitative analyses (such as observations, spatial analysis, visual and cultural studies). In addition to fieldworks on the mega shopping malls and related reports, readings of selected literature and essays are part of the assignments. Individual evaluation based on a learning portfolio (5 credits Aalto Dialogue and Urban Laboratory (students who attend half course) and 10 credits for the students of Urban Laboratory who attend full course The final assignment, at the end of the second period, (students from Urban Laboratory) is a case study report of the selected mega shopping mall. 10

11 STRUCTURE OF THE URBAN LABORATORY Lectures given by faculty teachers and invited speakers Instructions given by faculty teachers Weekly student presentations and discussions with the teachers Fieldworks on the metropolitan area of Helsinki and Excursion to Milan Students will also work in the laboratory (working and tutoring sessions are scheduled) Every week teachers feedback on the assignments (through MyCourses or face to face ) Individual evaluation based on a learning portfolio (10 credits full course; 5 credits half course) 11
