3 INTRODUCTION This 1860 Federal Census of Craighead County Arkansas was extracted, by R L and Flossie Dunnam, from microfilm copies of the original census books. We wish to apologize for any errors or omissions that may be found in this book. Some of the entries were difficult to extract due to ink blots, faded ink, poor penmanship, dark copies, light copies, etc. In some cases we were unable to decipher the phonetic spelling used by the enumerators. In 1860, many people could not read or write and the enumerators had to guess at the spelling of a name. For example, should it be "Emely" or "Emily", "Erwin" or "Ervin" or "Irving", "Coldwell" or "Caldwell". All of these variations are possibly correct, but many times you could not tell which one had been written by the enumerator. We attempted to write the names as we found them on the microfilm, even though we felt that they were incorrect. Why try to out guess the enumerators? Let the users have some fun trying to guess the correct spelling. Those of you that have examined microfilm of the early census books can understand our problem in performing this extraction. We extracted this information for our own use because we have roots in Craighead County as well as in Greene County. We wish to provide one copy, at no cost, to the Greene County Historical and Genealogical Society and to the Craighead County Historical and Genealogical Society. Standard abbreviations are used for all the states. Every effort has been made to keep this a true transcription of the microfilm. In 1860 Craighead County consisted of five (5) townships. The total population of Craighead County in the year of 1860 was 2,980.
