Metcalf. The Metcalf House was designed by University of Michigan (UM)-trained architect Robert C. Metcalf for himself and his family in the first years of his career, while working for UM professor George B. Brigham. Built in 1952-

11 53, largely by Metcalf and his wife Bettie, the Metcalf House possesses significance in the category of Architecture as an innovative residential design exhibiting the fundamental characteristics of the Modern Movement including its simple geometric form, use of large expanses of glass to bring nature and sunlight into the interior, and its open floor plan. After graduating from the UM in 1950, Metcalf remained in Ann Arbor and began to teach at the UM while at the same time establishing a private architectural practice. At the university he was named Chairman of the Department of Architecture in 1968, and then served as the first Dean of the College of Architecture, first appointed in He retired from the university in During the course of his private career, Metcalf designed over 150 projects in Michigan and Ohio, many for UM faculty and staff. Metcalf received numerous awards for his work, and his buildings have appeared in many popular publications. William Muschenheim, who was among the first Americans to study modern architecture in Europe, designed the house for himself and his family after accepting a teaching position at the University of Michigan in 1950.

13 Constructed in 1954, the Muschenheim House is significant under Criterion C in the area of Architecture as an important example of mid-twentieth century Modern style residential design exhibiting a straightforward and planar aesthetic expression derived from Muschenheim's European based training. The house demonstrates the innovative use of a prefabricated steel structural system, generally reserved for industrial projects, the use of large expanses of glazing and the strategic application of color as an integral part of the design.
