4 GEORGE CECIL NETTLETON: George enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. at Rosehill on 25th September 1914 and he was assigned to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade with the rank of Private and regimental number #3160. Initially he gave his father as his next of kin. George s attestation papers show that he was of the Church of England religion, he was 5 10 ½ in height; weighed 11stone 7lb, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. George arrived in Egypt with the first convoy of the 1st AIF. He was hospitalised in April 1915 after being kicked by a horse and soon afterwards took part in the landings at Gallipoli. George was wounded by a gunshot wound tot he leg on 13th July 1915 and three days later he was embarked for England for treatment and convalescence. George was a Gunner in the Field Artillery from the time of his enlistment until 1st May 1916 when he was taken onto the strength of 13th Field Artillery Battery. At that time he was given the rank of Driver. It is likely that George was transferred because he had become a very troublesome soldier. In 1916 he was twice found guilty of refusing to obey lawful commands of an NCO and was forfeited pay and spent 7 days in detention. The next year he was found guilty of when acting as stableman being absent from his post on 19th August He was awarded 7 days of Field Punishment. However he was wounded (did he serve his full penalty) three days later on 22nd August He was treated and sent back to England with a severe gunshot wound to the leg. George was returned to France and rejoined his unit on 12th November 1917 and he was soon in trouble again. He was charged with being absent without leave on active service on 20th November Soon afterwards George found himself in trouble for a fifth time on 30th December This time he was charged with drunkenness alternate charge refusing to obey an order of his superior officer George was sentenced by a military court of inquiry to 21 days of Field Punishment for his fourth offence and to 30 days of Field Punishment for the 5th offence. He also forfeited pay for these offences. George returned to Australia on 23rd October 1918 and he was discharged from the Army shortly thereafter. He worked as a stove painter and at the time of his death he was living with his mother at 9 Merton Street, Zetland. George drowned in the George s River at Lugarno near Hurstville on 4th March 1922 (NSW 1922/971) aged only 35 years. The coroner John Jamieson JP held an inquiry at the City Coroner s Court on 16 th March 1922 and found that George died from asphyxia by drowning (accidentally drowned while attempting to swim ashore from a boat). George was buried in the Methodist cemetery, Rookwood on 7th March iii. WILLIAM JAMES NETTLETON, b. 1890, Camp Hill Victoria. iv. HENRY THOMAS NETTLETON, b. 1892, Camp Hill Victoria; d. 25 Feb 1917, WW1. HENRY THOMAS NETTLETON: Henry enlisted in the 1st AIF at Liverpool on 5th January 1916 and he was initially 4

5 assigned to the 13th Infantry Battalion with the rank of Private with the regimental number # His attestation papers record that he was a member of the Church of England, 5 8 in height; 141 lbs, fair complexion, hazel eyes and auburn hair. Henry arrived in Egypt aboard the Star of Victoria on 11th April This was soon after the major reorganization of the Australian Army and Henry was transferred from the 13th Battalion to the 45th Battalion. He went to France with his battalion in June 1916 and in August 1916 he was treated for shell shock during the Battle of Pozieres. However the condition was not well understood at that time and he was soon returned to his battalion. It is highly unlikely that he had recovered by then. On 25th February 1917 Henry died of wounds received in action. This was during the withdrawal of German forces to their prepared positions in the Hindenburg Line. They left behind them snipers and booby traps to delay the allied advance and allow them to take up their positions unmolested. Australian troops tried to maintain the pressure on the Germans to prevent this and on 21st February the 45th Battalion mounted a raid on the German trenches. The battalion history (The Chronicle of the 45 th Battalion AIF by Major J.E. Lee DSO, MC) recounts the story: On the night of February 22nd, the Battalion followed up this success with a further attack. Captain Howden was again OC attacking part, which consisted of Lieutenants Ferguson and Muir, two bombing sections, and an escort of Lewis gunners, assisted by a bomb carrying party under CSM Crooks. Under cover of a Stokes mortar barrage, the party, led by Lieut. Ferguson, successfully rushed the enemy s block. They then bombed their way along the trench for 150 yards and captured one trench mortar and 32 prisoners, for whose capture 1629 CSM Crooks was largely responsible.. The captured trench was then consolidated by a party under Captain Schadel, who when out in No Man s Land dispersed with his revolver a German patrol. The attacking party had three men wounded, but besides the capture of the prisoners they killed and wounded many Germans. It seems likely that Henry took part in this raid. He succumbed to his wounds three days later at the age of only 25 years. v. HERBERT NETTLETON, b. 1893, Newtown NSW; d. 1893, Bowral. vi. LYNN JOSEPH NETTLETON, b. 01 Feb 1895, Jacqua NSW; m.
