The local Fire Brigade did good service in saving adjoining buildings but all the contents of the house were destroyed. There was no insurance on the furniture. The fire brigade was summoned and within half an hour had the fire under control doing good work in checking its spread to other shops the contents of the shop drapery valued at about 2500 were practically all destroyed by fire and water. The stock was insured in the New Office for 1000 in the name of the occupier and for 500 in the same office in the name of W J Ross and Co. Ltd. Wellington. The owner of the building is Edward Wilkie of Wellington who is insured in the Now Officeo for 550. Mr Wilkie was born at Upper Hutt his family being well known in that district. As a member of the Auckland Infantry Battalion he left with the 5th Reinforcements of the 1st NZEF for the Great War landing at Gallipoli where he was seriously wounded. He suffered for years with cheerful fortitude the after effects of his war service. Mr Wilkie some years ago was a very keen tennis player and a member of the Upper Hutt Tennis Club. He was also a popular member of the Paremata Golf Club and winner of many trophies. He had been in the clerical branch of the Government Architect's office for more than 20 years up to the time of his death. Mr Wilkie was a well-known New rifleman having joined the Upper Hutt Club over 40 years ago. He was champion shot of the club for six years and first represented New in He was a member of the New team that visited Bisley England in 1905 where he won the "Daily Graphic" Cup with a score of 158 out of a possible of 160 his last seventeen shots being all bulls. Mr Wilkie toured "Australia with the New team in 1906 where again his shooting was remarkable. At one time he was secretary of the Trotting Club when the races were held at Quinn's Post. As a cricketer he was a prolific scorer with the bat in his young days and was also interested in Rugby. He was a foundation member of the Upper Hutt Town Board and served on that body for some while.
