3 Globe Arena Globentorget Stockholm The Ericsson Globe is the national indoor arena of, located in the Johanneshov district of Stockholm The Ericsson Globe is currently the largest hemispherical building in the world and took two and a half years to build Shaped like a large white ball, it has a diameter of 110 metres and an inner height of 85 metres In February 2010 a funicular railway known as Skyview opened on the outside of the arena which takes visitors to the top for a virtually unobstructed view over Stockholm There is no known such arrangement elsewhere in the world Each of the two gondolas accommodates 16 passengers who will be 130 meters high when at the top Main designer, Svante Berg Lars Vretblad Nazar 3

4 Pennfäktaren 11 Vasagatan Stockholm This block at Vasagatan 7 has been transformed from an anonymous, enclosed building into a modern office block with shops and restaurants at street level The new development is based on a Green Building concept, which focuses on creating intelligent, energy-saving solutions for electricity, lighting and ventilation The compact concrete facade has been replaced by an intricate system of glass boxes and extruded metal areas During the day the building reflects its surroundings but at night it becomes transparent and illuminated 2009 Reflex Arkitekter Nazar 4

5 photo: HolgerEllgaard Hötorget buildings Sveavägen Stockholm The Hötorget buildings are five high-rise office buildings in Stockholm, Located between the squares Hötorget and Sergels Torg in the central Norrmalm district, they stand 72 meters tall and are a clearly visible landmark Though apparently not skyscrapers in an international context, the 19 stories-tall buildings do stand out on the Stockholm skyline, and are therefore called "scrapers" Built , they were labelled the architectonic five "trumpet-blasts" (trumpetstötar) of the renewed city centre by the Municipal commissioner (Borgarråd) Yngve Larsson The buildings are designed by different architects (from Hötorget and south: David Helldén, Sven Markelius, Anders Tengbom, Erik Lallerstedt, and Backström and Reinius) and there is thus a slight variation in the curtain wall façades Curtain walls are rare in and were here directly inspired by the Lever House by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in New York City built in Main designer, David Helldén Anders Tengbom Backström and Reinius Erik Lallerstedt Sven Markelius Nazar 5

6 photo: White s Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre Klarabergsviadukten Stockholm Stockholm Waterfront, also known as "Klara Hotell och Konferens" is a building for offices, conferences and hotels The building is located at Klarabergsviadukten in central Stockholm, at the place where Klara postterminal previously stood, overlooking Riddarfjärden The complex is built for three functions, called Waterfront Building (for offices), Radisson Blu Stockholm Waterfront (for hotel) and Stockholm Waterfront (for congresses) is the White arkitekter firm Radisson Blu operates the hotel and congress parts and was opened on January 20, 2011 The permanent outer shell is enclosed by "veils" constructed from 3500 z-profiles in stainless steel and fitted at a distance from the wall The design has also been prepared for illumination, which is going to further enhance the centre's distinctive character White s Nazar 6

7 Sven-Harrys Art Museum Eastmansvägen Stockholm The shiny six-storied building with a brass facade is located in Vasaparken in Stockholm and houses an art gallery, museum, restaurant, among other things Probably the most unique feature of Sven-Harry's is the museum on the roof of the building The floor plan is a copy of Sven-Harry's former home, the 18th-century manor house Ekholmsnäs on Lidingö Visitors will be able to cross the threshold of Sven-Harry's "home" and enjoy the art collection he has lovingly built up over the last 35 years In a genuine home setting you can see one of s s largest private collections of Nordic art and, in particular, many works of Carl Fredrik Hill Ernst Josephson, Anders Zorn, August Strindberg and Helene Schjerfbeck are also represented in the collection alongside furniture by Gio Ponti and George Haupt and carpets by Märta Måås-Fjetterström 2012 Wingårdh Arkitektkontor Nazar 7

8 Karolinska Institutet Science Park Fogdevreten Stockholm A challenging competition proposal from Sweco's architects has been realized at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm In three rounded volumes, an inspiring and technologically advanced working environment has been created for researchers and companies active in the Life Sciences area and with ties the Karolinska Institute The three elliptical volumes contain 26,000 square meters of laboratories and office space at the Karolinska Institute (KI),?s foremost center for medical research and education 2011 Sweco s Nazar 8

9 photo: Martin Götenstedt Krumbukter Sandbäcksgatan Karlstad With a simple white line, Krumbukter expresses a strong sense of freedom, joy and euphoria The line curls and bends, dances along the combined walkway and bike path, and then completely disappears The line conjures up various associations and seems to challenge new lines of thought and encourage exploring The artwork draws inspiration partially from roadway design, familiar to us in form and terminology We recognise the white lines, we have come across them in our day to day lives on roads, paths and at pedestrian crossings The artwork is using the same technique, marking paint, however the white lines of Krumbukter are bursting with life and simply will not conform or adhere to normal rules and practice With its bouncy, convex forms, Krumbukter changes the experience of the path and expands its meaning and purpose as well as its physically form Suddenly other rules apply and uniformity is exchanged for something else The path has become a stage, a scene for dance and theatre photo: Martin Götenstedt Main designer, Artist, Landscape architect Artist Client Karin Westermark kawe Anders Hellström Karlstad municipality 9

10 photo: Auriza Salim Akbar Västra Årstabron ÅRSTA HOLMAR Stockholm Stockholms Arsta Bridge marks an historic moment in the expansion and modernisation of s rail network, the elegant bridge sweeps across the lush Arstaviken bay, its rhythmic contours interacting with the existing 1929 bridge The organic wave form is a sensitive response to the surrounding landscape and the vibrant red pigment of the concrete resonates with the Falu-red timber used in Stockholms traditional buildings At 833m long, the bridge will supplement the existing bridge, dramatically increasing capacity with minimal impact on the surrounding landscape Following an international competition in 1994, Foster and Partners, together with Ove Arup, were selected to design the new Arsta Bridge, which would incorporate two new train tracks, a pedestrian and cycle way, and a maintenance access road On plan, the bridge incorporates a curve, and the rounded soffit responds to the sequence of bending forces as the bridge deck sweeps over the ten pier supports, which are elliptical photo: Auriza Salim Akbar 2005 Structural engineer Client Foster & Partners Arup Swedish National Rail Administration (Banverket) Aurizasalim 10

11 Tower of Söder Fatburstrappan Stockholm Söder Torn is a highrise building at Fatburstrappan 18 by Fatbursparken on Södermalm in Stockholm The building was originally designed to be 40 floors, but when it was finished in 1997 it was only 86 metres tall and contained 24 floors of flats Söder Torn is, shared with Skatteskrapan, the tallest residential building in Stockholm The building was originally designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen, but he left the project in protest of the compromises made during the planning 1997 Henning Larsen Nazar 11

12 ABF-huset Sveavägen Stockholm The ABF-house is designed by architect Helge Zimdal and inaugurated in 1961 The house was built for the Workers Educational Association, which still uses the house The building has a complex internal structure with shops and restaurants on the ground floor, and large auditoriums on the first floor 1961 Helge Zimdal Nazar 12

13 photo: White Arkitekter Tele2 Arena Arenaslingan Stockholm Tele2 Arena is an important piece of the jigsaw in the image of Stockholm as a world class city White is developing solutions for major experiences When the new multi-function arena in the Globe district is completed in 2013 A retractable roof makes it possible to hold sporting, concert and other events all year round For concerts, the arena can accommodate audiences of up to 40,000 Excellent views and closeness to the event provide an outstanding experience The project is a challenge to all of White's areas of expertise: s, landscape architects, urban design, environment, social sustainability, art and visualisation All of this expertise is coordinated by project managers at work meetings and internal workshops which use the White Innovation Process as a framework White s Nazar 13

14 Sparbankshuset - Swedbank Hamngatan Stockholm Sparbankshuset was an office building and headquarters for the Swedish bank, Stockholms stads sparbank, now called Swedbank The main facade overlooking Hamngatan is covered with green-painted aluminum sheet and is characterized by a visible suspension design of sharp steel beams from the roof A reconstruction was carried out by Nyréns Arkitektkontor when a new ventilation system was installed below ground level, which freed the top floor above the projecting office floors The new floor has been converted to offices and windows have been included in the facade The new facade design for the top floor has been adapted to the house architecture, with similar horizontal window proportions The property was classified in 2007 as one of the most valuable properties in the district, and that the building meets the criteria for historic buildings in the Cultural Heritage Act 1975 Main designer, Carl Nyrén Nyréns Arkitektkontor Nazar 14

15 photo: Åke Eson Lindman Galerie Nordenhake Hudiksvallsgatan Stockholm The gallery is located in a former garage, which Andersson converted into a suite of three large exhibition rooms, enabling shows of the scale and ambition for which Nordenhake's Berlin and Stockholm galleries are well known The 300 square metre ground floor is divided into two connected galleries and a showroom, providing the possibility of a single large exhibition or several smaller parallel shows All the rooms have museum standard floors and loading capacity, and the office and the storages are located around the gallery rooms The whole gallery is realised within existing structures The space provided a design challenge due to its irregular form By situating the office and the art storages on the edges of the space, Andersson freed the galleries from ventilation ducts and radiators This created an ideal, neutral space, where the architecture serves the art and not the other way around photo: Åke Eson Lindman Floor area/size m² Client Erik Andersson Galerie Nordenhake EAAB Tues-Fri 11 am - 6 pm Sat-Sun 12 am - 4 pm 15

16 Katsan Office Building Östgötagatan Stockholm The building has an uncomplicated external form: a long and narrow rectangular glass box The facade consists of a light metal cladding with glazing On the roof, set back from the facade, is a timber volume with adjacent terrace landscaping On the quay level an opening through the middle punctures the building Here is the building's main entrance, which can also be reached from the opposite side by a pedestrian bridge three storeys up The strategic position demands all the sides of the building to be a front, including the roof terrace Half of the building juts out into the adjacent canal and at dusk the facade is mirrored on the waters surface The magnificent views and the open spaces inside the facade are the motivation behind the large glazed surfaces Depending on the internal plan the different facades change character accordingly The open-plan office is exposed in the facade facing the water photo: White s 2005 White s Nazar 16

17 Kista Science City Färögatan Stockholm The Kista urban area is 's biggest corporate centre Here are more companies and employees within a limited space than anywhere else in the country Of the nearly 28,000 employees in some 750 Kista companies, two-thirds work in the ICT sector Here is everything from the major international enterprise to the small, entrepreneurowned ICT business Ericsson has its head office in Kista and is the largest single employer with a staff of more than 9,000 Kista Science City is located centrally in the Stockholm region, 15 minutes from Central Station on the underground railway and 15 minutes from the main Stockholm airport at Arlanda It also has the advantage of being close to 's financial centre in central Stockholm 2003 White s Nazar 17

18 Solna centrum metro station Solna Torg Stockholm Solna centrum is a metro station and shopping mall in Solna Municipality, approximately 5 km from central Stockholm, It is close to the Råsunda Stadium and opened on 31 August Main designer, Artist Artist Karl-Olov Björk Anders Åberg Nazar 18

19 Karolinska Institutet Aula Medica Solnavägen Stockholm Wingårdh has designed the building, the form and geometry of which contrasts with the traditional low-rise brick buildings on the campus It is situated along Solnavägen opposite the new university hospital With its central location and geometric form, the lecture hall complex opens up the campus area to the main public thoroughfare The abstract building cladded in six different types of glass stands like a bowl at the core of medical university Karolinska Institutet in Wingårdh Arkitektkontor Nazar 19

20 K:fem Årevägen Stockholm Fifty years after the opening of Vällingby, 's world famous New Town from 1954, works began with its resurrection After the glorious days when children and their mothers filled the community in the outskirts of Stockholm with life, other developments gradually drained the neighbourhood unit Less people made life difficult for the little cinema, as well as for the shops Vällingby was in need of new blood, and the pièce de résistance of the renewal would be a new department store Red as a lacquer box, the construction stands as a precious object by the new entrance of the centre With layers on layers, a sense of depth is transmitted in the façade The milky glass gets increasingly see-through as the white dots vanish towards top and exposes the red skin behind photo: Wingardh Arkitektkontor 2008 Wingårdh Arkitektkontor Nazar 20

21 photo: Johan Celsing s Arsta Church Bråviksvägen Stockholm The location is a rocky site over-looking Årsta torg (designed by the brothers Erik and Tore Ahlsén in the 1940-ies) The church will be built next to an existing bell-tower and a parish building from 1968 The structure is of load-bearing red-brown brick The interior is light with the lower part all clad in white glazed brick Along the walls is a continous glazed bench for seating The interior plan is a square where the altar and baptismal font are fixed at linear positions in the centre At the perimiter of the church are two small chapels and a sacristy clad in glazed bricks of green and cerise The roof and ceiling is a perforated concrete slab with beams crossing the church photo: Johan Celsing s 2008 Johan Celsing Arkitektkontor Nazar 21

22 KTHB Main Library Osquars backe Stockholm Then KTH Main Library at Valhallavagen became too small and outdated for its expanding operations started in 1992 In the sketch work that began in 1995 was tested five alternative locations The choice fell on the old laboratory building "Byxbenet" from 1917 The original buildings slumbering qualities have been brought to life with a new beautiful and natural space for studying, teaching and meetings Osquars hill has been transformed from a windy uphill to a new welcoming entrance and gathering place for the Institute of Technology students and staff 2011 Ahrbom & Partners Arkitektkontor Nazar 22

23 Lindhagsskrapan Franzéngatan Stockholm Lindhagsskrapan at Northwest Kungsholmen is located at Lindhagensgatan street's end, the fund against Moa Martinson Square directly adjacent to Ulvsundasjöns water's edge The building is 24 floors high and contains 82 st apartments The slim body of the building consists of two against each other displaced volumes Facades consists of a light concrete with a clear embossing pattern 2011 Rosenbergs Arkitekter Nazar 23

24 photo: Ricardo Bofill photo: Ricardo Bofill Pa Soder Crescent Sodermalmsallen Stockholm A building for shops and apartments, situated in the middle of a vast project for the redevelopment of the site formerly occupied by Stockholm's South railway station The main building is semicircular, forming a plaza with a diameter of 180 m, accompanied by two blocks on the south side and a further three blocks on the avenue leading off to the west The complex contains a total of 320 apartments, with a height of eight storeys The apartments in the semicircular building have their dining and living rooms on the south-facing convex façade with its more domestic appearance The bedrooms are oriented towards the plaza, which is busier during the day, despite being a pedestrian area The lines of the façade have considerable subtlety and purity, deriving from the Nordic classical tradition The project also served to introduce to techniques of precast architectonic concrete more sophisticated than anything previously seen in the country photo: Ricardo Bofill Public access unknown! 25 photo: Åke E:son Lindman photo: Åke E:son Lindman Doublehouse Danderyd Jungfruvägen Danderyd A house organized as a spiralling sequence of 4 large rooms in 4 levels These big spaces without a fixed hierarchy let this house invite the inhabitants to organise their lives following their own preferences The building envelope was defined by the full width, the maximum area and height fitting into the building regulations As a result of the existing topography spatial variations were developed; starting with the 4m ceiling height of the entrance level, the vertical passage up to the horizontally extended spaces opening up towards the surrounding greenery The upper large room links to the roof terrace - the biggest social area in the house Construction is in situ cast concrete Façades are rendered in plaster coloured dark greyish blue Protruding window boxes made of oak add a 3D quality to the façade, thus enhancing the depth and massive character of the interior All glass panes are fixed, with wooden side vents and doors photo: Åke E:son Lindman Project is not public! 26 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Dragspelhuset Kopparebäcken, Smolmark Årjäng This extension of an original cabin is located on the shore of the lake Övre Gla in the nature reserve Glaskogen in To use the maximum of possibilities given by the building regulations 24H made an extension to the cabin that can evolve, the building can literally adjust itself to its environment depending on weather conditions, season or the number of occupants The extension unfurls like a butterfly; during the winter it's a cocoon, compact with a double skin against the cold During the summer the building can change its form or, like a butterfly, unfold its wings for extra shelter during rainy days When the space is at its biggest, the senses are aroused to the max: living above the water of the stream The organic shape of the house blends naturally into the setting of the rough forest Traditional roofing materials, that were common in many years ago, were used in a contemporary way In due time this wood will turn grey, fitting smoothly in the rocky forest photo: Christian Richters Project is not public! 27 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Woodland Chapel Skogskapellet Sockenvägen Stockholm In the beginning of the 20th century Stockholm s burial grounds had to be expanded, so an international architect competition was initiated in order to ensure the dignity, artistic quality and harmony of the buildings, vegetation and landscape of a new cemetery - Skogskyrkogården, the Woodland Cemeter south of Stockholm A part of the Cemetery and the first chapel in the park, the Woodland Chapel, designed by E G Asplund, was completed in 1920 The wooden chapel with its white-washed walls and black roof is adorned by Carl Milles sculpture The Angel of Death, iron gates designed by Asplund and an altar painting by artist Gunnar Torhamn Erik Gunnar Asplund died in 1940 He rests beside the Chapel of Faith under a simple epitaph bearing the words His work lives photo: Maarten Scheurwater 1920 Client Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater The Tallum Pavilion, which is in the south of Skogskyrkogården, has a permanent exhibition about the cemetery and the two architects This visitor centre is open every day from 12-17:00 hr, from the 27th of May to 2 September Closed 22 and 23 June To book a tour, contact the Stockholm Stadsmuseum at

28 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Woodland Cemetery Skogskyrkogården Sockenvägen Stockholm The Woodland Cemetery - Skogskyrkogården - in Enskede, southern Stockholm, was built between 1919 and 1940 by the architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz On a ridge overgrown with pines they created a sacred landscape with several small chapels arranged to interact with the natural surroundings It expresses on a large scale the design aspirations that characterized Swedish architecture before and after World War II Asplund mainly devoted himself to the buildings, with the Crematorium standing out as a central work both in his own career and in the architecture of the 1930s as a whole Skogskyrkogården was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994 The justification of the World Heritage Committee was: "Skogskyrkogården is an outstanding example of how architecture and landscaping from our century combine to make a cemetery This creation has had a great influence on the design of cemeteries all over the world" photo: Maarten Scheurwater 1940 Client Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater the visitor centre is open every day from 12-17:00 hr, from the 27th of May to 2 September Closed 22 and 23 June To book a tour, contact the Stockholm Stadsmuseum at

29 photo: Maarten Scheurwater photo: Maarten Scheurwater Stockholm Public Library Odengatan Stockholm Like many of Asplund s other projects the Stockholm City Library ( ) went through numerous modifications and alterations during the design process Unlike most of his major projects, the design work of the Library was assigned to him without a normally required competition This arrangement provided Asplund the opportunity to develop his design in a more relaxed manner Eventually the design was a round hall surrounded by staircases, a tall cylinder with an opaque glazing in the roof lights The base of the building is a square The combination of spherical and cubic forms was a frequent motif, which can be found in both Asplund s earlier projects and those of his contemporaries A strict, symmetrical variation of this motif can be seen as a product of the search for innate aesthetic value of forms in the context of Classical Revival photo: Maarten Scheurwater 1928 Client Erik Gunnar Asplund City of Stockholm Maarten_Scheurwater 29

31 photo: Åke E:son Lindman photo: Åke E:son Lindman Bonniers Konsthall Torsgatan Stockholm Bonnier, 's largest publishing house, has added an extension to their post-war offices in Stockholm The new building is quite straightforward - a transparent glass and steel structure that sleekly follows the perimeter of what used to be one of the office's garden terraces This generates the building's most conspicuous feature - the flat iron form The Bonniers have been keen collectors for as long as they have been publishers So when they announced to house a gallery in the new extension, many expected it to be a display of their own collection However, this is not the case The focus is rather seriously and promisingly on contemporary art A fully glazed building does entail some obvious challenges, such as how to deal with the sun The aluminium louvres on the south façade facing the railway track, completely transform the building when the sun shines It changes from a delicate glass structure into a Potemkin-like wedge, which is not necessarily a bad thing Floor area/size m² Client Johan Celsing Arkitektkontor Bonnier Group Claes_Sorstedt photo: Åke E:son Lindman : Wed 11:00 to 20:00 Thu-Sun 11:00 to 17:00 Café: same hours 31
