1 CITY REFORMERS GROUP MEETING Monday 21st March Tuesday 22nd March 2011 CEP Conference Room (R405), 4th floor Lionel Robbins Building, 2Portugal Street, London Invitation The London School of Economics (LSE) has been working on the international research project Weak Market Cities since In September 2009 the ILS became involved through the funding of the Federal Ministry of Traffic, Building and Urban Development to join the second phase of research for another two years. As part of our research we have City Reformers Group Meetings and International Workshops and we would like to invite you to our events in London and Belfast. For the last five years we have explored the decline and recovery potential of former industrial cities in both Europe and the United States (in collaboration with the Brookings Institution) looking specifically at policy interventions, investments and impacts in seven cities across five European countries: Sheffield, Belfast, Torino, Bilbao, Saint-Étienne, Bremen and Leipzig. We have expanded our research to include the cities of Metz, Lille, and Bochum. The financial crisis is hitting our cities hard and those working to maintain and improve cities are facing huge pressures. We want to uncover what cities are doing to close the gap on jobs, employment and skill-building; the environment and sustainability; and social integration. As before, we want to involve city reformers who are actively engaged in economic, financial, physical, social and environmental issues facing cities. We are also planning a workshop in Belfast following the City Reformers Group (23rd March) that we hope as many of you as possible can come to. This will include a tour of the city as well as presentations about Belfast from leading experts in the city. This workshop links into the Belfast State of the City Breakfast Seminar organised by Belfast City Council on the morning of Thursday 24th March.
