1 ST CROSS COLLEGE RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION General Information Location of residences There are nine College residences, all of which are for men and women. They are conveniently located in relation both to the central College site and the main University and town facilities. The rooms are categorised as indicated on the following details. Please note that the majority of rooms offered are category 1* and 1**. There are a very limited number of 3 and 4 category rooms. The Main Site (St Giles) has 18 single study bedrooms. The Annexe (St Cross Road) has 49 single study bedrooms. The Abingdon Road Houses have 9 single study bedrooms in each. (Total of 18) The Wellington Square Houses have 9 single study bedrooms in one, 8 in the other and a suite of rooms for a couple in one. The Bradmore Road House has 8 single study bedrooms and a flat for a couple. Coolidge Close in Headington has 5 single study bedrooms. The houses in Copse Lane and Rippington Drive in Marston both have 6 single study bedrooms each. Stonemason House is brand new accommodation for , and is purpose built with 44 study bedrooms, with all rooms including en-suite facilities. 2 Cleaning of Kitchens All resident students allocated to a particular kitchen share responsibility for the cleaning of that kitchen, including the microwaves, hobs and ovens. The Central College site provides eighteen single study bedrooms in a new wing that was first used in January There are 3 levels of accommodation. Each level has 6 study bedrooms with 1 shared kitchen and 2 WCs and 2 showers/bathrooms. Each room has a washbasin in but please note that none of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms. Half the rooms are in category 1 and half (which are smaller) are in category 2. All rooms on the central site have Ethernet and telephone points. The St Cross Road Annexe is a purpose built residential building that has forty-nine single study bedrooms, arranged in flats comprising 5 study bedrooms, bath, shower, 2 WCs and kitchen. Each room has a washbasin in but please note that none of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms. There are 3 flats with only 3 study bedrooms; one of these flats has facilities which are suitable for the disabled. Each room has ducting for computers, telephones and television in each room. A computer room is situated in the adjacent Old School House. The site is located near the University science area, within approximately 800 hundred metres of the town centre, and about fifteen minutes walk of the Central College site. There is a TV room for use by all residents. Most rooms are in category 1 and there are a few 1*. The central College residential houses are all located within a 15 minutes walking distance of the central College site. They are small units, with about eight students in each, in pleasant locations, and are particularly attractive to those who prefer a house situation with a limited number of other students in the same place of residence. The houses include single rooms in categories 1*, 1, 2, 3, and 4. The houses have a laundry room and large eating kitchen. All rooms in the houses now have internet connections. There are 2 bathrooms in each of the houses. Each room has a washbasin in but please note that none of the rooms have en-suite bathrooms. Couples Accommodation we have 2 flats available for couples, to qualify to apply for one of these your partner must be living with you for the whole academic year. There is a large flat in the basement of 2 Bradmore Road, which contains double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and bathroom. There is a set of rooms in 14 Wellington Square, comprising double bedroom, sitting room and kitchen. The bathroom is shared with the other occupants of the house. All of the houses were newly decorated and had new curtains in the Summer of 2008 and Bradmore Road also had new carpets and furniture as well. Furniture in your room Your room will include: single bed (double in couples accommodation), wardrobe, chest of drawers, desk, desk chair, curtains and sink as standard. Couples accommodation also has a sitting area with seats provided. Size of rooms We do not provide information on the dimensions of rooms. Please Note - No animals are allowed in rooms or on the premises. 2

3 No car parking is provided at any of the College residences; and car parking is a great problem in any part of Oxford. There are cycle racks for residents at the main residential site and the Annexe, and it is forbidden to bring bicycles into College residences. All the study bedrooms are equipped with electrical sockets taking 13-amp, three square-pin plugs, but heavy-load appliances should not be used in the bedrooms. Anyone bringing electrical appliances into College has a responsibility to ensure that they are safe; they should be inspected/tested regularly by a competent person, ideally every 12 months. A copy of College Electrical Regulations will be sent to you, if you are allocated a room, once the Bursar is satisfied with your funding situation. The following are not allowed to be brought into College: electric fires, electric guitars, electric irons, refrigerators, cooking appliances. The College can take no responsibility for the loss of any items of personal property from the residences. Some insurance cover for personal belongings is provided by the College, however it is the responsibility of each resident to ensure the cover is great enough and to extend cover if needed. Residents must also make their own arrangements for the licensing of any private television in their rooms, as the College tenancy does not cover them. 3

4 Residential Rents All College residential rents are payable for the whole period, 1 st October until 30 th June in the following year, and not just for those periods when tenants are in residence. Rooms are to be occupied by the authorised student only and no subletting will be allowed. This means that residents are entitled to remain in their rooms throughout that period, including the time at Christmas and Easter when the College is closed. If any resident wishes to leave during this rent-payment period, he/she will continue to be liable for the residential rent payment. Residents may remain in residence throughout all or part of July, August and September by arrangement with the College Accommodation and Premises Officer. Residential rents are payable one month in advance by a series of post-dated cheques for the entire period of your tenancy agreement. Payment can also be made by Credit or Debit card, but please note that if paying by Credit Card, an administration charge of up to 1.72%, is added to the total charge for each transaction. No refund of residential rents can be granted for any period of absence from the residence. The room categories are as follows. Note that category 1** is the most expensive and category 4 is the cheapest. Categories 2011/12 1** * Suite of rooms: 14 Wellington Square Flat: 2 Bradmore Road The Categories are based on whether the accommodation is purpose built and/or the size of the room. All students are required to open a U.K. bank account and to leave this open after they finish their course and have left the college, so that any refunds can be paid into it. Deposit Keys and fobs are loaned to each resident. Great care must be taken of keys/fobs, as there is an obvious danger to the security of all residents if keys/fobs are lost. All such keys/fobs remain the property of the College and should a loss occur this must be reported to the College immediately, so that the fob can be deleted from the system and security maintained. Bills for the repair of any damage, other than for fair wear and tear, or the replacement of any College property or equipment, must be met by those responsible. A deposit of 300 ( 500 for couples accommodation), (subject to an increase) is payable by all residents, at the time of taking up residence, and this will be repaid after the departure of the person concerned, less any personal and communal charges (items of loss or damage in the residence which are not attributable to any individual(s)) that have been incurred, or less any residential fee which is outstanding. Noise Noise from playing radios, record players and musical instruments etc must cease by pm on the nights of Sunday to Thursday, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, as these are the times when it is considered that most residents will want to be able to sleep. 4

5 Guests There are two guest flats and a single room available for use in the College, these may be hired via the College Office. If you have a guest to stay with you in your place of residence, you will be responsible for his/her behaviour, and you need to: (a) drop a note informing keyholders and the College Office of their name and date of stay (to comply with Health & Safety regulations fire) (b) introduce your guest to the other residents so that he/she is not mistaken for an intruder Please note only 1 guest may stay in your room at any time for no longer than three nights and for very occasional visits only.
