Rms will als be inspected n a schedule that includes when the resident takes ccupancy, in mid-fall semester, during the Christmas break, in mid-spring semester, and when the resident vacates the rm (See als Yur Rm and Rmmate ). Residents f a flr r wing share the respnsibility f keeping their envirnment reasnably clean, including the hallways, lunges, and bathrm areas. Any flr member wh intentinally r unintentinally creates a mess in the residence halls will be held respnsible fr cleaning up that area. Each building has trash and recycling receptacles. Fire Safety - The mst effective way t avid harm in a fire is t be prepared BEFORE the emergency ccurs. In the residence halls we d this in several ways. At the beginning f the semester, yur RA will explain all emergency prcedures and relevant infrmatin, including the lcatins f exit stairwells, fire extinguishers, and alarm pull statins. Additinally, each hall will hld unannunced and/r annunced fire drills during the curse f the schl year. IT IS VITAL TO YOUR SAFETY THAT YOU EVACUATE YOUR HALL WHENEVER A FIRE ALARM IS SOUNDED. ALWAYS ASSUME THAT THERE IS A REAL FIRE, AND EXIT THE BUILDING IMMEDIATELY. Failure t leave the building may result in a fine and/r disciplinary actin. If yu are physically challenged r becme physically challenged (sprained ankle, any injury requiring crutches, etc.) at any time during the year, ntify yur RA immediately t be placed n the mbility impaired list maintained at the frnt desk f yur hall. Upn ding s, yu will receive further emergency prcedure infrmatin and instructins. The frnt desk maintains an upt-date list f mbility impaired students in the event f an evacuatin. Elevatrs are nt in peratin during a fire alarm. If yu see a fire r smell smke, pull the nearest fire alarm pull statin and immediately prceed t the frnt desk. Once yu have given the desk receptinist the specific lcatin f the fire, leave the building. Never attempt t put ut a fire yurself. If yu hear a fire alarm, immediately exit using the nearest stairwell. Please cmply with any instructins given by building staff r emergency persnnel. Once evacuated, stand clear f the building and all driveways until residence hall, Public Safety, r emergency persnnel indicate that yu may return. If yu are trapped in a rm, mve t the windw and wave brightly clred clthing r a light t alert rescue persnnel t yur lcatin. If pssible, write yur rm number n a piece f paper and place it in the windw. Open the windw at the tp and bttm t let fresh air in and heat and smke ut. Keep yur rm dr clsed and place wet twels alng the bttm f the dr. Smke detectrs are prvided in every rm t help prevent persnal injury. When the smke detectr sunds: If there is a fire, exit the rm, clse the dr, pull the alarm, reprt t the frnt desk and evacuate the building.if there is n fire, extinguish heat r smke surces, pen windws and dr and tell ther residents that there is n fire. Call the frnt desk immediately t ntify them f the false alarm. If the detectr des nt stp, call the desk and reprt the smke detectr malfunctin. If yu hear a smke detectr in smene else s rm and the dr is clsed, knck n the dr. If there is n respnse and the detectr has nt stpped sunding, call the frnt desk t request that a staff member investigate the prblem. It is a vilatin f residence hall and University rules and regulatins t tamper with r render inperable ne s smke detectr. Sprinkler heads are lcated in Davis Square, Deglman, Heider, Kenefick, Kiewit, McGlin, Opus and Swansn halls t help prevent persnal injury. Yu must nt blck yur sprinkler head in any way including using it as a fixture frm which t hang persnal prperty. It is in 11

12 vilatin f residence hall and university rules and regulatins t tamper with any fire suppressin device. Assume every fire alarm is a real fire, and exit the building immediately. Due t fire cde, students are nt allwed t pst any paper material n the exterir surface f their rm dr. Residence Life staff will pst dr name tags that have been treated with a special fire retardant chemical, but n ther paper materials are t be psted. Mtrized Vehicles - Mtrbikes, mtrcycles, r any device requiring the use f cmbustible fuels create a ptential fire hazard and may nt be ridden r stred in residential hall prperty at any time. Persns respnsible fr such items will be charged fr the remval and strage f said items. All vehicles shuld be stred in apprpriate vehicle student parking spaces. Emergencies (Pwer, Weather) - In the event f a pwer failure, emergency lights will activate. Remain calm and d nt use candles r ther flames. Keep hallways and cmmn areas free f bstructin. Due t the pssibility that a trnad watch r warning culd exist in the Omaha area, students are advised t be aware f weather cnditins. The University will use the Creightn Alert (CUAlert) system fr cmmunicatin in the case f an impending trnad, s all students are encuraged t sign nt this system fr this and ther emergency infrmatin. A Trnad Watch implies that the weather cnditins are such that a strm culd develp. A Trnad Warning indicates that a trnad has been sighted, thugh nt necessarily n the grund, smewhere in the Omaha area. The sirens yu may hear are meant t warn thse utside that a strm is in the vicinity and thus, students shuld nt wait fr the sirens befre they mve t safety. There is nt a siren that designates an all clear signal. Instead, Trnad and Strm Warnings have a time limit. This time limit, unless extended by the Weather Service, shuld indicate that any strm cnditins that existed have passed. When a Strm / Trnad Warning exists, students shuld mve t safe areas designated in each residence hall. These are: Davis Square Strm shelter in the basement f the west building (Rm B15) Deglman Hall Basement hallway Gallagher Hall Basement in the suth stairwell Heider Hall Garage area, stay clear f entrance dr Kenefick Hall Garage area, stay clear f entrance dr Kiewit Hall Basement McGlin Hall Grund flr interir rms vending area r study area beneath main entrance. T maintain the appearance f the residence halls, items may nt be displayed in r hung frm windws r ledges. As a safety precautin, the number f peple n a balcny at any given time shuld be limited. N alchl is permitted n the balcny. Hanging, jumping r mving frm balcny t balcny in any fashin is subject t disciplinary actin. Balcnies shuld remain free f debris, laundry and grills. Students may place their persnal furniture n the 12

Students with University furniture n their balcny will be charged a furniture replacement r repair cst. Windws must remain clsed when the building's heating r cling system is n, bth fr energy efficiencies and ptential system damage. Damage may ccur t the radiatr in the rm if a windw is pen when the heating systems are n and it is cld utside; students will be held respnsible fr any such damage and assciated cleanup that may ccur due t pening a windw during the winter mnths. A fine f $50 may be assessed if a resident pens their windw when the heating/cling systems are in peratin; windws may be pened nly in the fall and spring mnths when these systems are nt perating. Ask yur RA if yu are uncertain as t this timing. If the temperature f a student's rm is nt at a cmfrtable level, the resident may submit a maintenance request fr review f system peratin. The large, center windws in Kiewit Hall rms and windws withut screens in the cmmn areas f these buildings have been blted shut fr yur safety. These windws may nt be pened fr any reasn.
