CONT. 2 COUNTRY: SOUTH AFRICA 2017 IHA INTERIM MEETING NAME OF ORGANIZATION: NATIONAL HOME BUILDERS REGISTRATION COUNCIL ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW: The National Home Building Registration Council (NHBRC) is a state entity that was established in terms of the Housing Consumers Protection Measures Act, (Act 95 of 1998) to regulate the homebuilding industry and protect housing consumers.
3 The NHBRC Mandate 3 The Mandate of NHBRC is: to regulate the home building industry; to establish and promote ethical and technical standards in the home building industry; and to improve structural quality in the interests of housing consumers and the home building industry.

CONT HOUSING TRENDS - Reasons for increased starts - Multi family (pictures in next slide) - Generally in the urban areas - Could be either rental based or subsidised 3 storey walk ups - Rental - accommodate job seekers and non qualifiers for housing assistance - Supports rural to urban migration - Densification to optimize use of urban infrastructure and amenities - Maximum utilization of appropriately located land - Upgrading of old hostels / buildings - Single family starts (pictures to follow) - Meet housing demand in the different market segments - Creating human settlements with infrastructure and amenities - Providing dignity, water, electricity and sanitation for qualifying households

Some of the metropolitan areas already implemented : - Inner city densification housing projects - upgrading of old buildings - revamping of degraded inner city areas - Consolidation of living and working spaces to reduce urban sprawl - New public transport systems within the metropolitan areas - Incentivized development around public transport and economic nodes in industrial development zones
