2 THE STORY THE MECCA OF MAIL What was once a key stop during the pinnacle of railroaddelivered mail, the Rail and Commerce Building first opened its doors on July 3, Designed by W.T. Krausch, a well-known engineer of the time, and originally titled the Burlington Mail Terminal, the building, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a unique design to best accommodate the railway which once traveled through its lower level. Along the railroad tracks was also the original connection to the 10th Street Bridge. The use of steel rods embedded in concrete construction allows for the creation of layer upon layer of nearly unobstructed floor space. Large windows fill the exterior walls to flood the space with natural light and fresh air. OMAHA, THERE S A NEW HOT SPOT IN TOWN The Rail and Commerce Building lies right in the hub of the historic Rail and Commerce District, an area that was vital to Omaha s economic growth from the late 1800 s to the mid-1900 s.
