2 Bangoriad /6/04 1:41 pm Page 2 Bangoriad 2004 Welcome to the latest edition of Bangoriad. Many of you will be aware that 2004 marks the University s 120th Anniversary, and this year also marks the beginning of a major re-development of the University Estate. This edition reports on these developments, the University s involvement in the community and its continuing worldwide reputation of academic excellence, as well as the successes of some of our alumni spanning several decades. Our graduate community transcends barriers of generation and geography with over 35,000 contactable alumni throughout the world. The University actively endeavours to continue supporting you as one of its graduates through the auspices of the Bangor University Foundation. As the President of the Old Students Association remarks on page 32, alumni relations is all about the old and the new co-existing and working together for mutual benefit. Although changes have inevitably taken place since you were students here, your support and participation as our alumni ambassadors continues to be as vital as ever. Many of you kindly returned the alumni questionnaire circulated with the last edition and I would like to thank you for taking the time to tell us about yourselves and to help us plan the format of our future alumni programme. As the University prepares to welcome a new Vice-Chancellor in September, we wish Professor H Roy Evans well in his retirement. I hope the magazine reflects your fond memories of a unique time spent at Bangor and help you look forward to the many changes and developments taking place at the University. 3 Bangoriad /6/04 1:42 pm Page 4 A word from the Vice-Chancellor It is a pleasure once again to write this brief introduction for the Bangoriad. The articles that follow will give you some sense of the vigour and enthusiasm of the University s staff and students as we strive to enhance Bangor s international reputation for excellence in a wide range of different fields. Since the last edition of the Bangoriad, the University has made good progress on several fronts. In response to the Welsh Assembly Government s wish to see institutions in Wales working more closely together, we have been engaged in detailed discussions with the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI), with the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and with Coleg Menai, our neighbour from the further education sector here in Bangor. At the time of writing, the final outcomes of these discussions are uncertain but what is certain is that, through discussion, we will gain a greater understanding of, and respect for, the work and achievements of our potential partners. The benefits of partnership have been well demonstrated recently by the establishment of the North Wales Clinical School. The success of this development, which will be so beneficial to the region, was entirely dependent on the ability of a number of different bodies from the education and health sectors from across north Wales to work together in partnership. Bangor was proud to be a leading player in this partnership and investment by the Welsh Assembly Government in the North Wales Clinical School will allow us to complete the second phase of the Brigantia Building. More recently, the School of Psychology has been successful in attracting a substantial investment from the Wolfson Foundation which will allow the third and final phase of the impressive Brigantia development to be completed. At the same time, the Natural Environment Research Council has decided to invest in a new development of the science site on Deiniol Road. This important acknowledgement of Bangor s excellence will create further synergies in environmental science research and create an all-wales focus for such research. Also, funding from the European Objective 1 initiative and from the private sector will allow the conversion of some old Coleg Normal halls of residence into an ambitious new Management Development Centre which will contribute significantly to the economic development of the region and beyond. In all, the University has recently won capital funding in excess of 20 million for building developments and this now allows us to start on the most substantial building programme on the campus since the 1960s. At the same time, our research grant capture has reached a record level approaching 13 million per annum. Such successes are not easily won and flow from the fundamental quality of our academic work. It is also pleasing to note that there is now a strong demand for student places at Bangor. In September we welcomed over 9,000 students to the University. One notable success was the 50% increase in overseas recruitment which included, for the first time, a large contingent of Chinese students. For the current session applications for places rose by 4.9% compared to a UK average increase of 1.3% and against a drop in applications to Welsh Universities as a whole. For next year we have seen an even stronger increase in applications of 8.5% compared to an increase of 3.4% for the UK as a whole. There is strong competition for students these days and we must regularly review and refresh the courses that we provide to ensure that they are relevant and attractive. A good example of this is our increasing involvement in medical education, where collaboration with the University of Wales College of Medicine now sees some of their students taking their intercalated years at Bangor. Another example is the establishment of a new School of Law at Bangor. This will receive its first intake of students in September 2004 and the current level of interest from potential students suggests that the provision of Law studies in north west Wales will be very much welcomed. So a great deal is happening and Bangor is an ambitious and forward-looking University. Our plans are framed with reference to the Welsh, the UK and the international position of higher education and we remain committed to providing excellent teaching and research, to widening participation and to supporting the economic development of the region. As I write my last introduction to the Bangoriad and head for retirement, I am very grateful for the interest and encouragement that I have received from Bangor s former students. Our University faces an exciting and challenging future and I very much hope that my successor can count on that same support. Professor Roy Evans, Vice-Chancellor and we remain committed to providing excellent teaching and research, to widening participation and to supporting the economic development of the region. Gair gan yr Is-Ganghellor Mae n bleser unwaith eto i ysgrifennu r rhagair byr hwn i r Bangoriad. Bydd yr erthyglau sy n dilyn yn rhoi peth ymdeimlad i chi o egni a brwdfrydedd staff a myfyrwyr y Brifysgol wrth i ni ymdrechu i ymestyn a chryfhau enw da Bangor yn rhyngwladol am ragoriaeth mewn amrywiaeth eang o wahanol feysydd. Ers rhifyn diwethaf y Bangoriad, mae r Brifysgol wedi gwneud cynnydd da mewn sawl cyfeiriad. Wrth ymateb i ddymuniad Llywodraeth y Cynulliad Cenedlaethol i weld sefydliadau Cymreig yn cydweithio n agosach â i gilydd, rydym wedi cymryd rhan mewn trafodaethau manwl ag Athrofa Addysg Uwch Gogledd Ddwyrain Cymru (NEWI), â Phrifysgol Cymru, Aberystwyth, ac â Choleg Menai, ein cymydog o r sector addysg bellach yma ym Mangor. Adeg ysgrifennu r rhagair hwn mae canlyniadau terfynol y trafodaethau hyn yn ansicr. Yr hyn sy n sicr, fodd bynnag, yw y byddwn trwy drafodaeth yn dod i ddeall a pharchu n well waith a chyraeddiadau ein partneriaid posibl. Gwelwyd manteision partneriaeth yn glir yn ddiweddar trwy sefydlu Ysgol Glinigol Gogledd Cymru. Roedd llwyddiant y datblygiad hwn, a fydd o gymaint budd i r rhanbarth, yn dibynnu n llwyr ar allu nifer o wahanol gyrff o r sectorau addysg ac iechyd ar draws gogledd Cymru i weithio gyda i gilydd mewn partneriaeth. Roedd Bangor yn falch o chwarae r rhan amlycaf yn y bartneriaeth hon a bydd buddsoddiad gan Lywodraeth y Cynulliad Cymreig yn Ysgol Glinigol Gogledd Cymru yn ein galluogi i orffen ail gam Adeilad Brigantia. Yn fwy diweddar, bu r Ysgol Seicoleg yn llwyddiannus i gael buddsoddiad sylweddol gan Sefydliad Wolfson a fydd yn galluogi i drydydd cam a cham olaf y datblygiad Brigantia trawiadol gael ei gwblhau. Yr un pryd mae Cyngor Ymchwil yr Amgylchedd Naturiol wedi penderfynu buddsoddi mewn datblygiad newydd ar safle r gwyddorau ar Ffordd Deiniol. Bydd y gydnabyddiaeth bwysig hon o ragoriaeth Bangor yn creu cyfleoedd pellach i gydweithio mewn ymchwil i wyddorau r amgylchedd a gweithredu fel canolbwynt i ymchwil o r fath drwy Gymru gyfan. Hefyd, bydd cyllid o r cynllun Amcan 1 Ewropeaidd ac o r sector breifat yn ein galluogi i droi rhai o hen neuaddau preswyl y Coleg Normal yn Ganolfan Datblygu Rheolaeth newydd ac uchelgeisiol a fydd yn cyfrannu n sylweddol at ffyniant economaidd y rhanbarth a thu hwnt. Drwodd a thro, mae r Brifysgol wedi sicrhau cyllid cyfalaf o dros 20 miliwn ar gyfer datblygiadau adeiladu a bydd hyn yn awr yn ein galluogi i ddechrau ar y rhaglen adeiladu fwyaf sylweddol ar y campws ers y 1960au. Yr un pryd, mae r grantiau ymchwil rydym wedi eu hennill bron yn 13 miliwn y flwyddyn, sef y lefel uchaf erioed. Nid ar chwarae bach y mae cael llwyddiannau o r fath ac maent i gyd yn deillio o ansawdd uchel ein gwaith academaidd. Pleser yw nodi hefyd bod galw mawr yn awr am leoedd myfyrwyr ym Mangor. Fis Medi diwethaf fe wnaethom groesawu dros 9,000 o fyfyrwyr i r Brifysgol. Un llwyddiant eithriadol oedd y cynnydd o 50% mewn recriwtio tramor a oedd yn cynnwys, am y tro cyntaf, garfan fawr o fyfyrwyr o Tseina. Ar gyfer y sesiwn bresennol gwelwyd cynnydd o 4.9% mewn ceisiadau am leoedd, o i gymharu â chynnydd o 1.3% yn y DU ar gyfartaledd a gostyngiad mewn ceisiadau i Brifysgolion yng Nghymru drwyddi draw. Rydym wedi gweld cynnydd cryfach fyth hyd yn oed ar gyfer y flwyddyn nesaf, gyda chynnydd o 8.5% mewn ceisiadau o i gymharu â chynnydd o 3.4% yn y DU yn gyffredinol. Mae cystadleuaeth gref am fyfyrwyr y dyddiau hyn ac mae n rhaid i ni adolygu r cyrsiau rydym yn eu cynnig yn rheolaidd i sicrhau eu bod yn berthnasol a deniadol. Enghraifft dda o hyn yw ein cysylltiad cynyddol ag addysg feddygol. Trwy ein cydweithrediad â Choleg Meddygaeth Prifysgol Cymru mae rhai o u myfyrwyr hwy n awr yn dod i Fangor ar eu rhyngflynyddoedd. Enghraifft arall yw sefydlu Ysgol y Gyfraith newydd ym Mangor. Bydd hon yn derbyn ei myfyrwyr cyntaf ym Medi 2004 ac mae r diddordeb mawr a ddangosir ar hyn o bryd gan ddarpar fyfyrwyr yn agwrymu y bydd croeso cynnes iawn i ddarparu astudiaethau yn y Gyfraith yng ngogledd orllewin Cymru. Felly, mae llawer iawn yn digwydd ac mae Bangor yn Brifysgol uchelgeisiol a blaengar. Mae ein cynlluniau wedi eu seilio ar addysg uwch o safbwynt Cymru, y DU a r gymuned ryngwladol yn gyffredinol ac rydym yn parhau n ymrwymedig i ddarparu addysg ac ymchwil o safon ragorol, i ehangu cyfranogiad ac i gefnogi datblygiad economaidd y rhanbarth. Wrth i mi ysgrifennu fy rhagair olaf i r Bangoriad cyn ymddeol, rwy n hynod ddiolchgar am y diddordeb a r anogaeth rwyf wedi eu cael gan gyn fyfyrwyr Bangor. Mae ein Prifysgol yn wynebu dyfodol cyffrous a llawn her a gobeithiaf yn fawr y gall fy olynydd ddibynnu ar yr un gefnogaeth. Yr Athro Roy Evans, Is-Ganghellor 4 5

4 Bangoriad /6/04 1:42 pm Page 6 University News Newyddion y Brifysgol Building a Bright Future Having recently hosted a reunion for graduates of the mid sixties, the University will see its largest building re-development programme since the 1960's commence this Spring. The multimillion pound building programme includes a major development of the Science site on Deiniol Road. There will also be a new 10m Business and Management Centre on the banks of the Menai Strait within five refurbished Grade II listed buildings, next to the Hen Goleg building on College Road. The new centre set to be one of the best of its kind within the UK will further enhance the international reputation of Bangor s School of Business and Regional Development and include state-of-the-art facilities for over 500 students. The 2.6m second phase of the new Brigantia building is already well underway, with the extra space needed to accommodate the expansion within the School of Psychology as well as the new North Wales Clinical School. Expansion of the Ffriddoedd accommodation site is also expected. The University, established in 1884, has a long tradition of academic excellence which continues to this day, with the University priding itself on its quality of teaching and research. Of equal importance is the pastoral care and support provided for over 9,000 students who currently study at Bangor. The most recently published league tables in national newspapers such as The Guardian and The Times Higher Education Supplement lend support to these claims of teaching excellence as well as high levels of student support, with several Artist impressions of the new Science Site of Bangor s academic departments placed within the top 10 in the UK. Bangor emerged as the top university in Wales according to The Guardian (May 2003), reporting that the general consensus is that Bangor is a safe, clean and affordable place to live, and comes highly recommended. It is certainly the best place in the UK to study Electronic Engineering according to The Guardian tables, as is Bangor s phenomenally successful School of Psychology, ranked in the top five in the UK. The School has a research rating of 5*A, making it one of the best Psychology departments, and also has received the top rating of excellent for the quality of its teaching. Another department which can justifiably call itself one of the best in Britain is Bangor s School of Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences (SSHES), placed second in the UK out of 49 universities by the Times Higher. Agriculture at Bangor is also placed in the top ten of the UK institutions that teach the subject, with the latest tables in the Guardian, the Times and the Times Higher Education Supplement all confirming Bangor s recognized expertise in this area. Other departments which also featured highly in recent rankings include Music, Theology and Modern Languages. New degree programmes available include Biomedical Sciences, Childhood Studies, Chemistry with Computer Science, Creative Studies, Zoology with Conservation, Conservation and Forest Ecosystems, Ocean Informatics, Geography, and the world s first degree in Environmental Forensics. Law, one of the four most popular degree subjects in the UK, will also be taught at Bangor for the first time from September The new suite of Law degrees range from single Law to Law with Accounting & Finance, Law with Business Studies, Law with Criminal Justice, Law with Social Policy and a unique degree in Law with Environmental Conservation. Not only does demand outstrip provision of opportunities to study Law at UK universities, until now, it has not been possible to study Law in north Wales. Not only is Bangor the best University for anyone choosing to study in Wales, it is also one of the best in the world according to a survey carried out thousands of miles away by China s Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which ranks Bangor among the 500 top universities world-wide. The survey bases success on each institution s record of producing Nobel Laureates, respected and highly cited research papers and articles published in the two most important international scientific publications; Nature and Science. My comment that we were breaking through as a world-class research institution, made when the results of the independent research assessment exercise were revealed, are borne out by this independent survey from China. Here is further verification, if it were needed, that we are considered world-class for our academic standards and the quality of research that is conducted here at Bangor, commented Professor Roy Evans, Vice- Chancellor. Recruitment to Universities is now a world wide-market place, and Bangor has recruited well internationally. Being placed in the top 500 universities globally, when there are almost 200 in the UK alone, will be a real advantage when recruiting overseas, according to Iwan Roberts, Director of International Recruitment. The ELCOS (English Language Courses for Overseas Students) Unit offers pre-study language courses which enable students to bring their language skills up to the level needed to follow a degree course. In addition, an international foundation course and a one year pre-masters course are now available for students coming to Bangor to follow one of the wide range of postgraduate Masters degree courses on offer. Our students have grown in number this year. The new International Foundation course builds on the previous Japanese and Chinese foundation courses that we have taught and reflects the increasing international make up of our students, said Tony Pearson, head of the unit. Steven Houlston Professor Miles Awarded OBE Professor Tim Miles was awarded an OBE for services to people with dyslexia. Emeritus Professor of Psychology, he founded the School of Psychology, the Bangor Dyslexia Diagnostic Test and the Dyslexia Unit at the University, the first of its kind in the UK a quarter of a century ago. One of two rare caterpillars found at the University's Henfaes Research centre at Abergwyngregyn, emerged as a 9cm Death's Head Hawk Moth, a species found in southern Europe and northern Africa. According to superstition, the moth, with its distinctive skull and crossbones markings and loud squeak was a harbinger of death, war and disease, and its pupae achieved stardom in The Silence of the Lambs. The moths are rarely found in the UK as the pupae do not survive our cold winters. LANSIO R E.C.D.L. Jane Hutt AC gyda Cen Williams o Ganolfan Bedwyr a Gwerfyl Roberys o r Ystol Astudiaethau Nursio, Bydwreigiaeth ac Iechyd Jane Hutt AM with Cen Williams and Gwerfyl Roberts, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Studies Three new packs to support bilingualism in health care education were launched by Jane Hutt AM, the Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Health and Social Services, at the University s stand at the National Eisteddfod. Published by the University, the packs will aid students and lecturers in the health care education field, as well as supporting the use of Welsh and language sensitive practice in the health care area in Wales. The packs were developed by staff at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Studies and Canolfan Bedwyr. The Right Honourable Peter Hain MP, Secretary Peter Hain & Delyth Prys of State for Wales, also visited staff at the University s stand. He was interested to hear about a project to use open office systems to present Welsh language computer packages that public bodies, schools and colleges are able to use in the office and classroom. Yogan Kisten is the second Nelson Mandela Scholar to come to Wales and the second to study at the University in as many years. Twenty seven year old Yogan is studying a PhD in Medical Ultrasound Radiography at the University s School of Radiography in Wrexham, and has a clear goal in mind. On his return to South Africa, he wants to prove the cost and health benefits of making ultrasound more widely available for monitoring pregnant women. The Mandela Scholarship is awarded to young people who have proven themselves in their field and have the leadership qualities necessary to apply what they have learnt on their return to South Africa. Ultrasound is commonly used for monitoring pregnancies in the UK and is particularly useful in detecting the onset or extent of dangerous conditions related to high blood pressure such as hypertension and pre-eclampsia, and it is this application which interests Yogen. These conditions can be brought about by poor nutrition and housing and other social conditions and so although occurring in the UK, are more prevalent in South Africa and other developing countries, posing serious threats to both mother and foetus. Scanning for these conditions could be effective by both saving finite resources and avoiding distress to both mother and baby by early detection and treatment before the condition becomes critical. In rural South Africa, a pregnant woman would only receive a scan if she were an extreme case or if she had the financial resources to pay for such care. Yogan wants to see the use of ultrasound scanning for pregnant women in rural areas becoming more widespread, especially in relation to the detection and extent of conditions related to high blood pressure. Yogan has collected field data from South Africa and is analysing the data at the University s School of Radiography. I chose to study at Bangor University s School of Radiography for two reasons, explains Yogan. The School of Radiography has an excellent reputation for its radiography education, and I was drawn to the international student community. Yogan practised at the Groote Schuur Hospital, where Dr Christian Barnard preformed the first successful heart transplant operation, which is part of the University of Capetown. He is a practising radiographer and ultrasonographer and is currently working at the Liverpool Women s Hospital. We are delighted that Yogan has come to gain his PhD through the University of Wales, Bangor s School of Radiography, and that he holds us in such high regard. He is a committed young individual and will no doubt be able to share his new knowledge for the benefit of the South African health system, said Penny Nash, Head of the School. BANGOR S FLAGSHIP SAILS The Prince Madog, the School of Ocean Science s Research Vessel, and the only research vessel based at a UK university, visited Cardiff Bay. Leading members of the National Assembly Government, civil servants and other national agencies were invited on board to see the facilities and learn about the University s commitment to environmental research. As the blades are attached to the first offshore windfarm in north Wales, scientists at the School of Ocean Sciences are leading a consortium that has been awarded a grant from the Crown Estate to look into the likely effects of windfarm developments on a small black duck called the common scoter. 'Liverpool Bay holds the second largest community of common scoter in the Irish Sea' said Dr Michel Kaiser of the SOS, 'These birds are protected by UK and EU legislation, and there is current concern that windfarm developments may interfere with their feeding habitat'. Using the RV Prince Madog to sample potential food for the common scoter, Dr Kaiser's research group will work with behavioural ecologists from the University of East Anglia and the Centre of Ecology and Hydrology based in Dorset to model the likely behavioural response of the birds to various scenarios of windfarm development. 7 Bangoriad /6/04 1:42 pm Page 12 Research & Development News Plans for University Cancer Research Institute unveiled On 27 October 2003, the University revealed plans to create a major cancer research centre. Unique within Wales and equipped to standards barely matched elsewhere in the UK, it will conduct world class research into the fundamental causes of cancer. A Professor of Cancer Research will be appointed to run the Institute. It will house an eventual staff of 50 scientists, arranged in 7 teams, many of whom will be appointed from among world leading researchers in this field. As all cancers stem from changes in the genetic code, the teams will conduct fundamental molecular biology targeted at understanding the causes and effects of these changes. According to Professor Mark Baird, Pro Vice- Chancellor, 'The Institute will provide a major step in our strategy to produce research of international importance. The presence of a dedicated research team, that has such excellent facilities at its disposal, will bring benefits to the region as a whole.' John Lewys-Lloyd, Chairman of the North West Cancer Research Fund said, 'We are delighted to be supporting this very exciting initiative in north Wales. Never before has the charity made an award on this scale, that we are doing so now is because we are committed to continuing our support of cancer research in the University and are confident that the Institute will allow research of the very highest quality to take place. I am As a result of an Objective 1 project, the optoelectronic materials sector in north Wales now have at their disposal a range of world-class specialist particularly pleased for our volunteers who work so hard year after year to raise the research money.' Funding for the Institute comes from an award of 430,000 from North West Cancer Research Fund, 645,000 from the Research Capacity Development Fund award by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (part of ELWa). Added to this, staff resources, refurbishment and equipment costs, which the University will meet from other sources, bring the total investment to 3.5 million. The Institute will be housed on one floor of the University's Brambell Laboratory, with other associated laboratories housing specialist equipment. The whole floor is to be refurbished to provide open plan laboratories. This will enable the research groups to interact and will encourage collaborative working and discussion. The Institute will be furnished with state-of-the-art equipment needed to conduct genomic research. Many pieces of high tech scientific equipment are already in place at the University's School of Biological Sciences. The North West Cancer Research Fund is an independent regional charity with a strong presence in north and mid Wales. It has been funding fundamental research in the University for a number of years and 10 of its voluntary committees are in Wales. Last year, the Welsh committees raised 98,500 for research in the University. World class analytical technology made available to local companies analytical equipment and the opportunity of accessing consultancy and collaboration opportunities with researching chemists at the University s Chemistry Department. Purchase of the cutting-edge equipment was made possible through an Objective 1 funded grant of 1.2m to the University in collaboration with the Welsh Development Agency, with the promise that the equipment is available to researchers and industry in the north Wales region. The main thrust of the project is to provide support for the development of the OpTIC Technium centre in St Asaph and the optoelectronics business sector in north Wales. Access to the equipment and expertise at the University will provide further cutting edge support for this important commercial sector. "The opto-electronic materials sector is a recognised growth sector, with currently companies in the region. It is anticipated that the Chemistry Department s enhanced facilities will help to encourage further development of the sector said Dr John Macdonald, head of the University's Chemistry Department. BANGOR S ACADEMICS ACHIEVE BIG INCREASE IN RESEARCH FUNDING Research income at the university was buoyant standing at 12.7 million which included a dramatic increase of 64% in research council funded grants. Professor Mark Baird, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), said: This funding is won in fierce competition with other university academics, and it demonstrates Bangor s reputation for research. Some of the grants won are extremely substantial, but even smaller grants are often very difficult to get. The staff deserve the highest praise. Roedd incwm ymchwil i r Brifysgol yn iach, sef 12.7 miliwn, a gwelwyd cynnydd sylweddol o 64% yn y grantiau ymchwil a gyllidwyd gan gynghorau ymchwil. SCHOOL OF INFORMATICS New posts created Four new academic posts at the School of Informatics will contribute to the development of a high tech IT industry cluster centered around Bangor and will be vital to the School s strategy to enhance its reputation as an internationally recognised centre of excellence in computing and communications. The new posts are funded by an award of 750,000 by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales Research Capacity Development Fund (RCDF), part of a 1.4. million award made to the University. The creation of these new posts will strengthen the School s existing research base in computing. Associated closely with the new posts is the development at Bangor of a Centre for Advanced Software Technology (CAST), which is supported by the Welsh Development Agency. The Centre will provide a hub for a computer software sector in the region that will provide high quality career opportunities for IT graduates in North Wales. One of the new appointees, Professor Nigel John has been awarded an EPSRC grant to investigate An Advanced environment for Enabling Visual Supercomputing. The academic base of the recently established Newyddion Ymchwil a Datblygu NEW ENVIRONMENT CENTRE FOR WALES CEH and University staff to work together more closely to provide a focal point for environmental science research and training in Wales. Professor Pat Nuttall, Director of CEH, said By joining forces with the University we have a unique opportunity to create an international hub for environmental science in Wales. I am delighted that North Wales Clinical School, which is devoted to medical training, will be in Phase Two of Brigantia, currently under construction and also funded by the Welsh Assembly. When complete, at a cost of 8 million in total, Bangor will have one of the finest academic developments in this leading area of biomedicine in the UK. Professor Roy Evans, Vice-Chancellor, said This is a major development for the University and for North Wales. It will particularly strengthen the University s links with the NHS and our research and training in biomedicine. It is also yet another outstanding achievement for our 5 star-rated School of Psychology. We could not have had a better start to 2004 and I am delighted for all our staff who have worked so hard to bring this about said Professor Fergus Lowe, Head of the School of Psychology. Winning such recognition and support from the Wolfson Foundation and the Welsh Assembly for our research in neuroscience enables us to establish at Bangor a centre of excellence that will be in the forefront internationally for years to come. NERC s Council has given the go-ahead for this important new venture. The new centre will bring together and build on the existing strengths of the two organisations. It aims to provide fresh opportunities for research spanning the boundaries of terrestrial, freshwater and marine sciences, to develop new approaches to managing both the land and sea in a sustainable way. The scientists will benefit from having state of the art facilities in a landmark building which will act as a focal point for environmental research within Wales. Additional funding has been won to ensure this building demonstrates many aspects of environmental and sustainable construction. Dr Bridget Emmett, Director of the CEH site at Bangor said We are fortunate to have an expert in the University who can advise us on the latest photovoltaic technology to provide up to 30% of the building s energy needs. We will also be using locally sourced materials such as Welsh oak and slate, capturing rainwater for grey water use and ensuring the building is as energy efficient as is possible. We are very excited about this opportunity to construct a building which will showcase the latest green building technologies in Wales. The new centre will bring together over 90 environmental scientists spread across three departments - the Schools of Agriculture and Forest Sciences, Biological Sciences and Ocean Sciences - under one roof. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roy Evans, said, This is great news for Wales. I m certain that, once established, the new Environment Centre will become the heart of environmental science in Wales, providing jobs and international expertise for years to come. The University also aims to be responsive to local and regional needs and is particularly conscious of its role as a research resource and a training base for north Wales

8 Bangoriad /6/04 1:43 pm Page 14 Research & Development News The Incredible Years Programme Curbing anti-social behaviour is a challenge to government at every level. Jane Hutt AM, Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Health & Social Services attended the launch of a new Centre at the University on 18 September 2003 which will reduce future anti-social behaviour by improving children s emotional and social competence. The Centre will research and promote Incredible Years programmes for children, parents and teachers, and is the only such Centre outside Washington State, USA, where these programmes were developed and researched. Over 30 centres throughout Wales are already running the programmes, thanks to the work of Dr Judy Hutchings in fostering the Incredible Years programmes here. Some of these centres are working with referred children with behavioural problems, their families and teachers. Others are working with whole classrooms of young children, in preventive early intervention inititatives, to teach them social, friendship and problem solving skills and increase their confidence. The Incredible Years Programmes are proven not only to prevent violent behaviour developing in children but also to increase the emotional and social competencies of all the children who take part. The new Centre will continue Dr Judy Hutchings work in introducing this programme to teachers, social workers, the voluntary sector, and in training, research and networking and support functions carried out in recent years by the University s Bangor Child Behaviour Project. Extensive research into the effectiveness of The Incredible Years parenting programmes run in Sure Start centres across north Wales is already under way and the Centre will bring together teachers, Baby Sonny Roberts, with Dr Guillaume Thierry from the School of Psychology Infant degrees! Local babies assisted scientists at the School of Psychology and were presented with Learner T-shirts and Honorary Infant Scientist Degrees for their contribution to science. The babies help Bangor s psychologists in ascertaining exactly when infants attach meaning to individual words. This 324,526 Economic and Social Research Council funded research, builds on previous work. Dr Judy Hutchings in Cardiff at the Welsh Woman of the Year Awards parents, NHS Trust staff, community workers and community mental health teams using Incredible Years from all over Wales. Dr Hutchings said: "The Incredible Years programmes have been developed and researched by Professor Webster-Stratton over 25 years and are, from the evidence that I have seen, among the most effective programmes in the world in reducing Nia Powell o r Adran Hanes a Hanes Cymru gyda r ymchwilydd, Helen Watt (chwith) Nia Powell of the Department of History and Welsh History and researcher Helen Watt (left) behavioural problems and in encouraging children s pro-social behaviours. They are fully researched and are supported by evidence of their effectiveness in the long as well as short term. "There has been a significant rise in the numbers of children with behavioural problems in recent decades. There is a serious risk of these children carrying these behavioural problems into adulthood with far more serious consequences, to themselves and to society. Working with children with behavioural problems and their families, and also working preventively with at risk children, reduces the likelihood of criminality for these children in later life. These programmes can also assist all parents to improve their parenting skills for their own and their children's benefit," she added. The Incredible Years Programme is one of the priorities for the charitable fund-raising of the Development Trust. Already private sponsorship has been found, particularly from Mr Goronwy Cleaver, but more support is needed. Welsh Woman of the Year Finalist! Dr Judy Hutchings was nominated as a finalist for Welsh Woman of the Year Her nomination was in the category of woman as entrepreneur having established this innovative treatment centre within the NHS to support children with severe behavioural problems and their families. Attending the Award ceremony in the CIA, Cardiff was a wonderful experience and a chance to learn about many talented women in different fields from across Wales, said Dr Hutchings. INFLUENCE FELT ALL THE WAY OUT IN NEPAL Thousands of breathless trekkers each year gratefully stop to admire the stunning high altitude scenery as they pass through the village of Landruk on their way to Nepal s famous Annapurna mountain range. As their gaze shifts from the famous Fish Tail mountain to the brilliant green sloping terraced foot hills 6,000 ft up the Himalayas they could be forgiven for thinking it was all mother nature s work. It isn t. In fact it s all down to novel relationships being forged between local farmers and international scientists in a groundbreaking project that is gradually changing the way that local farmers grow their crops by building upon, rather than replacing, their traditional knowledge. Much to the surprise of many other scientists worldwide, the hardy villagers of the region, who famously swell the ranks of the British Army s Ghurkha Regiment, are starting to adopt more sustainable scientific farming methods and are reaping the rewards. For years social scientists in the United Kingdom have worried that new technology would make redundant the traditions and knowledge gained over generations by local farmers; that local methods would be supplanted by Western technology. Natural scientists, on the other hand, have found it difficult to develop improved technology suitable for hill farmers because the intricate hill farming system is so complex. In collaboration with LIBIRD, a grassroots organisation in Nepal, the University of Wales, Bangor, decided to pursue a middle way, pooling the vast local resources and modern scientific techniques. A team of scientists were dispatched to the area known to climbers as the Gurung staircase. It was a delicate mission where diplomacy and tact weighed heavier than their scientific apparatus. But there was a big plus to the mission. Dr Fergus Sinclair and his Nepali PhD student, Pratap Shrestha, were as eager to research and understand local faming traditions as they were to impart their own scientific theories. At the prestigious annual Festival of Science held by the British Association for the Advancement of Science these two natural scientists announced that there is a middle way, and like the terraced slopes of Landruk, it is flourishing. Our aim was to strike a balance between international science and local methods rather than seeing them as in opposition. Local people need assistance is solving environmental problems. The key issue is bringing science to bear on local problems in ways that strengthen rather than supplant local science. This begins- but doesn t end with discovering the great reservoir of sophisticated knowledge local people have about their environment, said Dr Sinclair, Director of Research at the University s School of Agriculture and Forest Sciences. Their main area of concern was soil and water management and the need to reduce erosion and loss of nutrients. The interdependence of crops, livestock and forest has started to weaken and more than half the farms in the area cannot produce enough food. So Dr. Shrestha encouraged villagers to form research teams and the exchange of local and international knowledge began. Villager, Mrs. Joginta Sunar, who cultivates half a hectare became one of the many who volunteered as a research farmer. By common consent she decided to experiment with hedgerows and a new type of grass. It was so successful her plot became the centre of the village s attention and she now wants to diversify and breed Angora rabbits for wool production. It is these new types of grasses, inspired by a project at the University, that adds to the green, Himalayan slopes admired so much by passing trekkers. The research was funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) forestry (FRP), livestock (LPP) and natural resources systems (NRSP) programmes but DFID accept no responsibility for any outputs produced or opinions expressed. Now, indigenous rights and local farming knowledge can be combined with, and enhanced by the modern technology developed at the University

The 371,000 raised was nearly double the previous year s and topped 500,000 when investment income is added to the new donations. But sums of money do not convey the real essence of the Development Trust. The projects the Trust support do make a difference. Currently the Trust supports 49 students at a time when mounting student debt is having such a negative affect on higher education. The Drapers Company has remained a vital supporter not only for individual students, but also for important research into coping with cancer and depression. Many students are being supported too from the generosity of the two Parry-Williams funds (Ann & Gareth Lloyd Jones), Lloyd Jones (Pennsylvania), Walter Sheldon (Australia), Merrill Lynch and the Cemlyn Jones Trust. It was with deep regret that the Trustees learnt of the death of Miss Gaynor Cemlyn Jones, whose support and generosity to marine archaeology research in the School of Ocean Sciences, particularly Dr Cecil Jones, has made such an impact on our knowledge of the Menai Strait. Contributions are still being accepted to the Geoff Sagar Memorial fund. Dr Tom Parry Jones decided to support the cause of entrepreneurship by generously endowing an Annual Lecture. The first lecture was delivered by Dafydd Wigley & Stephen Jones. 120 school children from north Wales enjoyed the event, which included an exhibition. The University of Wales, Bangor Development Trust has devised a unique plan whereby you can make a capital donation to the University but continue to receive the income from the donation. This income will continue for the duration of your life and your nominated beneficiary. The Bangor Lifetime Income Scheme (BLIS) is specifically designed for people who wish to leave gifts to the University while maintaining the benefits of the investment income from the capital sum during their lifetime. BLIS was launched in response to those of you who wish to leave a gift to the University so that others, perhaps less fortunate than yourselves, may benefit from the educational opportunities Bangor has to offer. In times when many students are experiencing genuine hardship, bursaries are extremely important. In addition, there are several capital projects which will be impossible to undertake without private support. All gifts made under this scheme will be used to 'Yn y llun yma a dynnwyd yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Meifod gwelir Dr Ann Lloyd Jones yn derbyn y copi cyntaf o Côr y Werin, gwaith ei thad, yr Athro Parry Williams. The minimum donation is 3,000 when a personal Trust is formed to manage the donation. Because the gift is irrevocable, it falls outside any liability for inheritance tax and it cannot be taken into account when assessments are made to calculate fees in residential and nursing homes. At the cessation of the personal Trust, the sum gifted passes automatically to the Development Trust and can be earmarked for a particular purpose by the donor. Also at the launch was Guto Pryderi Puw,(far right), the first Parry Williams scholar, supported by the Parry Williams fund in the Development Trust. REMEMBERING TONY CHAMBERLAIN The untimely death of Tony Chamberlain was announced in last year s Bangoriad and despite the passage of a year, the shock waves of this sad event are still being felt among the staff in the Centre for Arid Zone Studies, the final part of the University to benefit from his munificence. How to do justice to the memory of a personality as large and as open as Tony s, exercises the mind. Not only was he a prominent scientist in his own field of pig nutrition and his interest in the University and its works all encompassing, his natural generosity meant that his enthusiasm and support for other peoples ideas and interests knew no boundaries and are, therefore, equally important in defining the significance of his impact during the 40 years he served the University of Wales, Bangor. However, underpinning most of the things that he did for you, me and countless others, was the belief that a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of basic science was the essential characteristic of any competent scientist or agriculturalist. As part of the current developments at Henfaes, an Iraq s Arid Zones War ravaged Iraq was the latest destination for Dr Ian Robinson, director of the Centre for Arid Zone Studies. With over 30 food supply missions under his belt, Dr Robinson headed a United Nations Food Supply Mission to establish how the recent war in Iraq affected food supply in the country. The findings will be used to make policy recommendations for appropriate food and agriculture programmes in Iraq, including short and long-term assistance to the agricultural sector to increase agricultural production and productivity. The Development Trust supports highly successful agricultural projects worldwide, and for further information about how you can help transplanting projects to increase food security in semi-arid and low income countries please contact: Dr Ian Robinson, Director, CAZS, University of Wales, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2UW. Tel: w.i.robinson@bangor.ac.uk existing laboratory is being rehabilitated. Located in Aber, no more than a couple of fields away from where Tony plied his trade to such good effect for 30 years, this new laboratory makes an ideal vessel in which to cherish his memory and to continue his approach. To these ends, it is proposed to call the new laboratory at Henfaes the Tony Chamberlain Laboratory. It behoves us, therefore, to make sure that this naming is a lot more than a gesture or a nod to a past era. The Development Trust needs funds for a ceremony, an appropriate plaque and above all for a ringfenced fund that ensures that the Tony Chamberlain Laboratory will never lack the basic equipment, materials and services that his basic science first approach demands. Many of you are probably looking for a way to observe his passing and I hope that you, like me, can recognise in this development, a response in keeping with what he, himself, would wish. What the Trust can offer for donors is stability, continuity, a wide range of charitable projects and there are no administrative charges. This year, the Trust has been asked to raise up to 400,000 towards the new development of law at the University. Most of this money will be used to upgrade an existing small law library, and each donation will be match-funded by a good friend of the University who is a managing Partner of Ernst & Young. Other priorities include the launch of a quality brochure on legacies (which has been distributed to all north Wales law practices) and the Bangor Lifetime Income Scheme. This year ( ) the University has asked the Trust to plan for our 125th anniversary by preparing for a 5m development plan to be completed by This will be the Trust s most ambitious target ever, but the Trustees are confident that the strength of the projects will prove successful. John W Jones, Director of the Trust said I m sure this target is achievable as the Trust has raised 7m in the past, with over 4m being donated to the University and 3m being invested in the endowment funds. Alex Jarrett (Music), left, attended the annual education dinner at the Drapers' Hall. Pictured with him is the Master, James Devereux, centre, and the Clerk, Alastair Ross. Former students of the University, honorary fellows, donors who live in the London area as well as Bangor s regional MPs, were invited to an exclusive event at the gilt-laden Drapers Hall, in the heart of the City of London recently. There, they were entertained by the Bangor Baroque Soloists at a Gala Concert under the direction of Dr Bruce Wood of the University s School of Music. University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Roy Evans, was also present to address the guests. This event provided an opportunity to tell our friends and supporters about the work of the charitable arm of the University the Development Trust, explained John Wynne Jones, Director of External Affairs. The Trust supports highly successful agricultural projects worldwide, a major cancer research development and numerous projects working with families throughout Wales. The Trust has raised 7 million since it was founded during our Centenary in 1984 and its emphasis has always been to support students and create bursaries to support research. With the crises of debt hitting so many students, this work has now come centre stage

11 Bangoriad /6/04 1:43 pm Page 20 Staff News Milton authority recognised Professor Thomas Corns was honoured with the prestigious Irene Samuel Award, presented by the Milton Society of America for the most distinguished collection on John Milton published during the year. Professor Corns of the English Department is a leading authority on the seventeenth century Bangor administrator nominated for international award Dr. John Perkins, Assistant Registrar has been nominated for the prestigious European Association for International Education (EAIE) award for people who have done the most to promote international education. John has been nominated for his ability to influence attitudes and policies towards international education, and for his considerable personal commitment to the work. A graduate of Bangor (Agriculture 1971, PhD 1978), John has visited countries ranging from Southeast Asia and the Middle-East to Central America, often in challenging circumstances. He was promoting the education of tribal women in Taliban-controlled villages in Pakistan on the Afghanistan border during the attacks on the World Trade Centre in September Undeterred by this experience, he recently visited universities in Palestine as part of a wider mission to promote peace in that region, and experienced at first-hand many of the problems caused by conflict there. John Perkins was the first person in Wales to suggest that University policy on the charging of fees to international students should take into account the economic circumstances of their home country. John worked with University committees and senior policy-makers to ensure that this has been adopted. Through his work, Bangor became the first University in Wales, and one of the first in the United Kingdom, to provide a reduced tuition fee for students from poor countries. John said I am very pleased to be nominated for this Award. I believe that education is important in promoting understanding between people of different cultures, and I am happy to be able to play a part in this. In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Professor Gareth Wyn Jones, Associate Director of the Centre for Arid Zone Studies was elected to the Executive Committee of the poet and he joins an illustrious list of British and North American academics who have been so honoured. I m delighted to receive this international recognition for my work, said Professor Corns. Having studied Milton for over three decades, Professor Corns is a recognised expert on the works of John Milton. He is Editor in Chief of the new Milton encyclopaedia published by Yale University Press, secretary to the standing committee of the International Milton Symposium and founder and co-convenor of the British Milton Seminar. He is a Fellow of both the Royal Historical Society and the English Association. Currently writing a major literary history of the period for publishers Blackwell, Professor Corns is also leading a major Arts & Humanities Research Board funded research project into the authorship and significance of a major theological work ascribed to Milton. The manuscript had been lost after its confiscation by the government of the day shortly after Milton's death, and was rediscovered in the nineteenth century. Its highly heretical content, blasphemous in the eyes of some commentators, made its revelation something of a sensation. UWB s Gareth is elected to ICARDA Executive Committee International Centre for Agricultural Research for Dry Areas (ICARDA) and as Chairman of the Committee which oversees ICARDA s research programme. Dr Chris Freeman said 'It was a real surprise to get the invitation. Even more so, when I realised how the research we do here in Bangor has become so influential there.' Dr Freeman's research became known in the United States after he discovered how an enzyme traps more C0 2 in soils than you can find in the whole of the atmosphere. The story reached the national press and was even covered by the New York Times. This interest has now been followed by his invitation to Washington to advise the National Science Foundation. Carreg Gwalch Press has published Llwch Cenhedloedd: Y Cymry a Rhyfel Cartref America (Dust of Nations: The Welsh and the American Civil War) by Jerry Hunter. This is the first book to treat this subject, a field which is exciting as well as painful, given the nature of the war experiences it involves. The American Civil War was the most important single milestone in the history of the United States, with the country torn in two for four years between 1861 and It signalled the end of slavery, thus the Civil War was a crucial part of the process of making the United States into a modern nation. Thousands of Welsh people - or Welsh-speaking Americans - played a part in the war, and thousands of pages written in Welsh which come directly from the American Civil War have survived. Indeed, as soldier s letters and diaries were not censored (as they were in later wars), it s very possible that this is the largest - and most honest - body of war writing in the Welsh language. This new book is the product of more than 15 years of research, and it is based on a huge amount of original sources, some of them unpublished Dr Chris Freeman Newyddion Staff UNIQUE BOOK IS PUBLISHED manuscripts which are now coming to light for the first time in over a century. This massive amount of written material shows that Welsh Americans were able to use their mother tongue in treating the unique and often horrible experiences relating to the greatest turning point in the history of the United States. The book concentrates to a great extent on the way in which Welsh Americans worked against slavery. By the start of the war, Welsh-speaking Americans as a group were radicalised and organized against that immoral institution, and they thus tended to see the war as a crusade against slavery. The book also contains a great number of period photographs, and it proceeded a related documentary series broadcast by S4C in January. Dr. Jerry Hunter, a graduate of Harvard, is a senior lecturer in the Department of Welsh at the University. Arthurian tribute Professor Peter Field's distinguished career as a specialist in Arthurian literature is being marked by the publication of a festschrift - a collection of essays in his honour. RETIRING PROFESSOR A Festschrift Honouring the Past and Shaping the Future edited by Dr Robert Pope will be published to mark the retirement of Professor Gareth Lloyd Jones as Head of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies

LIFE AFTER BANGOR After completing, particularly in the early years, a standard forestry course at Bangor, graduates went off to all sorts of jobs, forestry and other, at home and abroad, and experienced a wide range of, often unexpected, situations. Bob Ellis (1956), now in Tasmania, has provided an amusing account of his first assignment in Newfoundland, and suggests that others might like to offer accounts of interesting experiences. As well as being entertaining, such accounts could provide insight into the changing face of forestry geographically and over time. Contributions are, therefore, cordially invited by the end of May, and will be collected and provided as part of the Forestry Centenary celebrations. They should be sent to Forestry Centenary, School of Agricultural and Forest Sciences, University of Wales, Bangor, Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2UW, U.K., by to: forestry@bangor.ac.uk or via the Alumni Relations Officer (see previous page). 14 Bangoriad /6/04 1:44 pm Page 26 Graduate News Newyddion Graddedigion GRADUATE BECOMES PRIME MINISTER Paul Bérenger, who graduated at Bangor in Single Honours French in 1969, was sworn in as the first non-hindu Prime Minister of the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius last year where he was Leader of the Opposition for some time. A veteran of Mauritian politics, he has been active for the past thirty years. The small island state Mauritius has enjoyed a good record of democracy since gaining independence from Britain in 1968, although traditionally voting has taken place along communal lines. It is comprised of several ethnic groups which emigrated there over the centuries. Hindus remain the majority on the island, but there are significant communities of Muslims, Chinese, Creoles and Franco-Mauritians. As in the United Kingdom, executive powers are vested in the hands of the prime minister. It is felt that Mr Bérenger's accession represents a new era in Mauritian politics. Composer elected to American Academy Professor Bernard Rands Composer Bernard Rands, former student and member of staff of the School of Music, has been elected to membership of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The honour of election is considered the highest formal recognition of artistic merit in the United States. The Academy was founded in 1989 to foster, assist, and sustain an interest in literature, music and the fine arts. The Walter Bigelow Rosen Professor of Music at Harvard University and a Pulitzer Prize winning composer, Bernard Rands work has won enormous international critical acclaim through a long and distinguished career. Keith reverses the brain drain! People attain their full potential at different stages in their lives, some are high achievers at an early age, passing exams and taking a direct route to higher education, others reach their goals by more varied routes, later in life. This was certainly the case for one local school leaver, now tipped to be one of Britain's leading quantum chemists. When Keith Hughes of Y Felinheli left school at 16 with 3 O levels, little did he dream that he'd ever be lecturing and researching in the exotic area of theoretical and quantum mechanics, with a promising career in research ahead of him! But that is the reality for Keith who was recently appointed to a lectureship in Theoretical and Quantum Chemistry in the University s Department of Chemistry. Keith has also been awarded one of only four prestigious Ramsay Memorial Fellowships for , enabling him to devote most of his time to conducting research in his chosen field of quantum mechanics. Keith Hughes hated science at school and left to join the Army, but now finds the subject fascinating. He spent four exciting years as a paratrooper. On leaving the Army he travelled to Australia and did various jobs before realising that a career required an education, and that a degree in a science subject would probably make him very employable. Keith returned to north Wales and followed a Science and Technology Access course at Coleg Menai and has never looked back. "Within weeks I was hooked into Chemistry, though at the time I didn't think that I'd specialise in the subject" he says. Having completed the 18 month course, Keith was accepted to study Wood Science at the University, but after the first year decided that it wasn't the subject he wanted to follow. The Chemistry course he followed in his first year became his main interest. That's when Keith's talents became apparent. Having switched straight into the second year of a Chemistry degree, Keith was Keith Hughes awarded the Evan Roberts Prize for the best second year student in the Chemistry Department. The following year, as well as receiving the Peboc Medal and Prize, this time for the best third year student in the Department, Keith was also awarded the Dr John Robert Jones Prize for the best graduating student at the University. After graduating, Keith studied for a PhD degree at Bangor specialising in theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics as it is applied to Chemistry under the supervision of Dr J N Macdonald. In the second year of his PhD studies he was one of only 8 students in the UK selected in an open competition, to attend a Conference of Nobel Prize Laureates held in Germany. After completing his doctorate, Keith was appointed as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Texas in Austin, where he worked with Professor Robert Wyatt, a world leader in the field of quantum dynamics and theoretical chemistry. It was while there that he applied for, and was selected, for the lectureship at the Department of Chemistry in Bangor. Shortly after his appointment as lecturer he was awarded a Ramsay Memorial Fellowship and is now co-sponsored in his post by the Ramsay Trust and the Welsh Development Agency. "I am in my element teaching and researching chemistry and am delighted to be able to move back to the area with my family. I really look forward to helping the Department and the region develop in the future!" said Keith, who is married and has a young family. Dr John Macdonald said "Keith's return to north Wales represents, in effect, a reverse brain drain. We are delighted to have him in the Department and recognise that his presence in, and commitment to, the north Wales region is a huge asset. We are very grateful to the Ramsay Memorial Trust and the Welsh Development Agency for helping us to attract back into Wales such high quality talent". Cwrs Bangor yn agor drws... Mae un o raddedigion cyntaf gradd cyfrwng Cymraeg newydd, Astudiaethau Theatr a r Cyfryngau, wedi cael ei dderbyn i wneud cwrs MA mewn Actio ar gyfer Ffilm a r Cyfryngau yn yr East 15 Acting School adnabyddus yn Llundain. Angharad Lewis A GLOBAL CHALLENGE Catherine Jones, 1995 Ocean Sciences graduate is an enthusiastic sailor and is taking part in the The World s Toughest Yacht Race, the Global Challenge, sailing from Southampton in September This race is a chance of a lifetime to sail around the world against the prevailing winds on one of twelve 72ft purpose built yachts. Since completing her degree, Catherine has worked in the Met Office, The Environment Agency and more recently within the Water Industry in the UK and is currently a water quality scientist with Mid Kent Water based in Snodland, Kent. The training I received whilst completing my degree has been invaluable and I would like to thank all those involved at the School of Ocean Sciences for their help and encouragement over the time I spent at Bangor. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Bangor and I am still in regular contact with a number of friends from my course and halls of residence. Ifan Prys DISCOVERY OF DNA Born in Nefyn, Emeritus Professor Herbert Wilson, completed his studies at Bangor in 1949 and returned to the University on 20 November 2003 to speak about an historic moment and reveal the part he played in the discovery of DNA. His lecture marked the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA by Nobel Laureates Watson and Crick. Professor Wilson wrote one of the supporting papers following the landmark scientific discovery. After graduating from Bangor, Professor Wilson moved to Kings College London, and then to St Andrews, Dundee and finally Stirling where he was professor of Physics until his retirement. Lovyrinthhos Dr Ioanna Psalti (1984, Marine Biology/Chemistry) organised an interactive exhibition (Lovyrinthhos) on love with photos, poems and installations in Belgium. The reception in January was followed by coverage on national radio, a poetry-reading on the national poetry day and a regional TV channel provided coverage. The regional government also placed a notice for the exhibition on their offical website. As a result of its success, the exhibition may now tour Germany, Finland and England - and may also come to Bangor

Ellie s time at Bangor was spent immersed in drama, both by choosing drama related modules under the flexible module system and her activities with the student drama society. Ellie was a Forces child, brought up in Hereford, Germany and toured British Forces schools in Germany with a workshop and production. She returns to Germany again this summer to conduct more drama workshops, before spending a longer period at one school developing a performance with the pupils. She said: At Bangor I have been able to focus on aspects of drama that interest me right the way through my degree. I chose modules in creative writing, film studies, directing and medieval drama. QUEEN S AWARDS FOR ENTERPRISE David Moore graduated in French in 1968 and returned to Bangor in September 2003 in his capacity as Secretary to the Prime Minister's Advisory Committee for The Queen's Awards. Bangor was the final venue of a three-day media tour covering north Wales, north East and north west England to encourage entries for the 2004 Queen's Awards for Enterprise, established in 1965 as The Queen's Award to Industry and re-launched under its present title for the 2000 Awards. The scheme is open to any UK-based business unit with two or more employees and further information can be found on The Queen s Awards website at: Perhaps Bangor graduates may be amongst future winners! As a former student of the Communication and Media Department, Mali decided to return to the department to follow a higher degree when the MA in Media Production was launched. GRADUATE IN AFRICAN SPORTS INITIATIVE Ted Theaker graduated from Bangor in 2002 and decided to join Sports Coaches OutReach (SCORE), a non-governmental organisation based in South Africa. The schoolteacher from Halifax was placed for a year in Cala, a rural village in the middle of the Eastern Cape with the objective of trying to uplift the community through sports. Following a life-changing event in 1998 when he went to Tanzania as a volunteer working for a month with churches and schools, he realised that he had a lot to offer. I applied for the University of Bangor and finished my BA in Education. Afterwards I went back home and started a teaching job, which has been great. Nonetheless I always wanted to come back to Africa to thank the continent for getting my degree. SCORE gave me that opportunity. Life in Cala was completely different to the working environment he left behind in the UK. Instead of moving around in his car and facing a full class of healthy children, Ted walked or cycled to the schools on deserted unpaved roads, lives amidst cattle, sheep and goats, and taught children who were fortunate to get at least one nutritious meal a day. His day started at half past five and he would go to one of the three schools he s working with. He teaches Physical Education and also trains teachers to do the same so they can take over after he has gone. After school, from late afternoon till early evening, he coached a girls soccer team, and spoke with community members in order to set up Committees and Sports Councils, organised tournaments and introduced new sport codes. Besides these more mainstream tasks he was also engaged with the most misfortunate children of all: the orphans and the HIV/AIDS infected and affected. Ted regards the latter as one of the most valuable things he did in Cala. We give them hope. They learn how to think positively and how to live a healthy lifestyle. This programme, Isibindi (to be strong from the inside), will extend their life and keep them away from crime. We also show the noninfected that it is possible to play together with those who are and, at the same time, teach them which precautions they should take in order to kick out this horrible disease. It is fantastic this can all happen under the umbrella of sports. You can t just watch the telly. It really is a completely different world. You have to experience it yourself. Marty regularly writes columns in several magazines and is retained by The Daily Mirror and New Woman Magazine for freelance features. He is also recognised as an interviewer by BBC, BBCi and BBC Three (in respect Fame Academy 2). None of which, he says, would have been possible without Bangor University. In 2000, I went to an open day at Bangor University, got off the train and in three minutes (before seeing the University) I said to myself I m coming here to study. He said, You might leave Bangor after just three or four years. But Bangor will stay with you for a long time after that. Presentation for Society for Marine Mammalogy Andrew Wright, a graduate of the new MSc Marine Mammal Science course at Bangor, was accepted to give a presentation to the 15th Biennial Conference of the Society for Marine Mammalogy in North Carolina, USA, in December. His conference entry - Storm conditions and sperm whales in the north Gulf of Mexico - was competitively selected from over 800 submitted abstracts, and demonstrates the quality of material produced by Bangor graduates. His project work, analysing sperm whale acoustic data from seabed recorders in the Gulf of Mexico, involved processing one of the largest sperm whale acoustic data sets in the world. Dr. Kareem M. CO-OPERATION BETWEEN OLD AND NEW It was pleasant lingering memories of good old days gone by at the College on the Hill which led us to establish the Old Students Association many years ago. By now, with the world transformed and our students coming from the four corners of the world and education and business inextricably linked together, we have had to adapt our methods of operating. In 1999, under its recent title University of Wales Bangor, the Bangor University Foundation, supported by the External Affairs Office, was established to assist graduates from all over the world to stay in touch with each other and with the University. The Foundation has an important advertising function, including arranging departmental reunions and an Annual Open day for all our alumni. It was therefore envisaged that it would be prudent for the old Society and the new Alumni Foundation to co-operate for their mutual benefit. By now the old Society is mainly a local society and will continue to organise more local activities, as it always has. It will continue to have an annual dinner in the autumn and promote activity through the medium of Welsh and all former students who live locally are welcomed to join. This, of course, includes former London Bangorians Meetings for 2004 are as follows: Summer: July visit to Waddesdon Manor Autumn: October 16 We will be delighted to hear from any former students who are able to come to any of the meetings or indeed wish to be added to our mailing list. Contact details are at the end of this report. Please get in touch! We held our usual meetings in 2003, and as always were pleased to see old friends and some new faces too. Our speaker at the AGM was Ailsa Burns, whose presentation A Botanist in Switzerland gave us the opportunity to enjoy splendid flora in a spectacular Alpine setting. More in keeping with the 21st century, we agreed on the shorter name of London Bangorians. Mr Bryn Lloyd Jones students who studied at Bangor on a part-time basis. However, the Foundation has a comprehensive database of former students which we can put to good use to renew old acquaintances. By now the Bangoriad, in its new and colourful format, has been published with worldwide circulation to every former student who wishes to receive it, free of charge, and provides information about current developments here at UW Bangor. Another perfect Summer s day marked the summer outing to Wakehurst Place in West Sussex, followed by Bruce Walker s wonderful hospitality in the evening at Cuckfield. The Autumn meeting was pure nostalgia with a selection of my slides and reminiscences of Bangor in the 1960s, a prelude to the April Mid Sixties Reunion in Bangor this year. Something of a vanished world, but in other ways it is always a source of pleasure that Bangor doesn t change much. Looking forward to seeing you in Bangor or London soon. ROBERT BURNS, Honorary Secretary, Hazel -Dene, 28 Stapleton Hall Road, Stroud Green, London N4 3QD Telephone: rgburns@stroudgreen.fsnet.co.uk One of the world s most distinguished scientists, Sir John Meurig Thomas delivered a Public Lecture in Bangor on The Unpredictability of Science and its consequences in October This lecture generated huge interest both inside and outside the University. The main theme of the lecture that experts are no better than members of the general public in foreseeing the scientific and technological future was illustrated by reference to specific discoveries, advances and developments in chemistry, physics, medicine, molecular biology and astronomy. The son of a South Wales coalminer, Sir John began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Wales, Bangor, in He later became Professor of Chemistry at Aberystwyth and then Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. From 1986 to 1991 he was Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, and was Master of Peterhouse the oldest college in Cambridge from 1993 to He holds Honorary Degrees The old boys returned to the University in November to receive the Cymmrodorion medal from the Honourable Society of the Cymmrodorion. Emyr Humphries (left), author, and Sir John Meurig Thomas, scientist, both received the highest award that can be bestowed by the Society, which has only been awarded to 51 people since Top scientist gives lecture in Bangor from many universities around the world, and has won numerous medals and prizes. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1977, and was knighted for his services to chemistry and to the popularisation of science in In 1995, a new mineral meurigite was named in his honour. Sir John will be guest of honour at the Old Students Association annual dinner at Oswalds, Bangor on 2 October More details about this evening will be available from the Social Secretary nearer the time

ISLWYN FFOWC ELIS graduated at Bangor soon after the Second World War. An award winning novelist, he published nine substantial novels in ten years, many of which have now been translated into English, German, Italian and Irish and are studied at European colleges. Described as one of the 'giants of Welsh culture', his most well-known novel, Cysgod y Cryman, was declared the Welsh Book of the Century in He died at the age of 79 and will be remembered as an author of distinction. GAYNOR MAIR CEMLYN-JONES ( ) Gaynor Cemlyn-Jones, who died on 26th April 2003, was a generous benefactor to the local community. She had a special interest in marine conservation and the work in the School of Ocean Sciences which promoted research in this sphere. Through the Pen-y-Clip Trust she promoted work in subjects such as marine archaeology and supported the first PhD programme in this subject. One outcome of this was the conservation and reconstruction of a boat dated at This vessel, still 90% complete, is on permanent display at Llanberis. During the late 1990s, the scope of the marine archaeology programme was extended under the title of "Marine Environmental History" and was based at the School. It is supported by the recently established Cemlyn-Jones Trust, and its remit includes sea level studies and the re-interpretation of ancient coastlines. The Trust supports a PhD student (Mr Michael Roberts) and a Research Fellow (Dr Cecil Jones). Current research focuses on the evaluation of the Menai Strait and the Archaeology of Fisheries and the ancient sea routes of the Irish Sea. Future research will reflect Miss Cemlyn-Jones concern for the maritime heritage of north west Wales, where she lived for most of her life. The mission of the research programme is the science-based investigation of maritime history, a history of human beings controlled and empowered by marine environmental processes. One of the University s largest and busiest marine teaching laboratories will bear the Cemlyn-Jones name in recognition of the support provided to further our understanding of these vital processes. CECIL JONES DR CYRIL PARRY ( ) A native of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Cyril Parry was educated at the County School and in Carmarthen College. While a teacher, he gained an external BSc Economics degree from London and began researching. He was appointed as a lecturer to Liverpool Polytechnic before coming to Bangor. He joined the University staff in 1964 as a lecturer in Government & Politics in the History Department. In 1967 he became a key member of the University s new Department of Social Theory and Institutions. In the same year he was awarded a PhD for his thesis on Socialism in Gwynedd He wrote and published books and papers on the radical tradition in Welsh politics, on Lloyd George, on the Labour Party in Gwynedd and on Gwynedd and the First World war. He was an excellent lecturer and was notable for the conscientious care he took of his students. He was made a Senior Lecturer in He transferred to the History Department in 1982 and remained there until his retirement in 1991 He was also a public figure; he was a member of the old Anglesey County Council and of the first Gwynedd County Council. He was its first Director of Education, and he made a special contribution in establishing its education policy. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Betty, the children and all the family in their loss. REV DR ALWYN ROBERTS, FORMER PRO VICE-CHANCELLOR PROFESSOR PETER FISH The School of Informatics and all colleagues and friends were deeply distressed by the entirely unexpected death in early September 2003 of Professor Peter Fish. A recognised expert in the field of ultrasound, tributes were received from all corners of the globe testifying to the international reputation Peter had earned for his research work. DR JACK W GOLTEN ( ) Jack Golten was born on 27th April 1942 in Cardiff of Jewish immigrant parents from Czechoslovakia who fled the persecution there with their two other sons to settle in Wales. He was brought up in Caerphilly and attended local schools there. He read Electronic Engineering at Bangor and graduated with a 1st Class Honours degree. After an MSc from Birmingham he did a years postgraduate study at the University of California in LA before returning to Wales to complete his PhD at Swansea. In 1968 he married Carol, his wife of 35 years and they eventually settled in Cheadle Hulme where they brought up their two children Helen and Alex. His early career, right after his PhD, was with Shell in Holland where he was much concerned with control engineering problems in processing plants. Control engineering had always fascinated Jack from his undergraduate days and he lectured on this and systems analysis at the Manchester Metropolitan University for most of his professional life serving for some time as head of the Mechanical Engineering department. He was highly regarded in his field and his two books on the subject published by McGraw Hill were very well received and widely read. He also developed innovative control system software for educational and industrial purposes which sold internationally. Jack first became ill in 2002 and although his initial operation and chemotherapy were at first successful, the illness progressed and in June 2003 he was readmitted to hospital where his condition deteriorated rapidly and he passed away on 11th July with his family around him. Jack leaves behind not only his wife Carol and two fine children and two grandchildren but also his friends who were privileged to know and love him. His friendship and humour were always much valued and his spirit in his illness was an inspiration to all. He will be very sorely missed by all and their lives will be diminished by his passing. GERRY WHITE ALASDAIR CRAWFORD ( ) Alasdair Crawford, 24, a Marine Biology graduate was killed when his yacht capsized during a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay in December. He was from Castle Douglas in Scotland, and he was described as an adventurer whose ambition had been to skipper oceangoing yachts. He had already made several voyages transporting boats. He will be sadly missed by staff and students at the School of Ocean Sciences who knew him. PHILIP DALEY ( ) Following work in the New Forest, he graduated (BSc Forestry) at Bangor in 1948 under Professors Thompson (Forestry) and Thoday (Botany). He always recalled his personal equation of 111 paces to 100 yards for field survey taught by Colonel Molesworth! After graduation he joined the Colonial Forest Service and served as Assistant Conservator of Forests in the Jos, Ibadan and Minna Provinces of Nigeria, interrupted ( ) by the Colonial Forest Officers Course at Oxford where he met his wife. In 1959 he transferred to the single-handed post of Forestry Officer, Hong Kong, to run a Forestry Division in the doldrums with an obsolete policy to protect water catchments and produce poles and fuelwood, but eventually succeeded in getting this changed to amenity forestry with a strong emphasis upon conservation which developed into a very successful Country Parks programme. Assisted from 1970 by another Bangor forester (John Wholey 1952), 21 Country Parks had been designated by Philip s retirement in This work continued, with the recruitment and post-graduate training of Chinese people. By 2002, 42,000 hectares of scenic hill land (40% of the land area) was Country Park under active protective management, providing an important recreational facility for the residents of Hong Kong a legacy of which Philip and his family may be justly proud. A pleasant, mild-mannered man of firm Christian conviction, retired to Oxford, Philip is survived by his wife Anne, daughters Ruth, Joanna and Frances and eight grand-children. (Submitted by JOHN WHOLEY and edited by BARRY TEASDALE) ALAN (JOCK) CARLISLE ( ) On August 7, 2003, Jock Carlise, age 79, of Deep River, died in comfort and with love at the Elizabeth Bruyère Centre in Ottawa. He made his final journey with his cherished and loving wife Joan and his three daughters Kathryn, Sara and Susan at his side. He will also be greatly missed by his six grandchildren, Stephen, Michael, Margaret, Elizabeth, Hanna and Alice; his two sons-inlaw, Ken Couling and Peter Schoenberg, along with many other valued family members and friends, and his cat Benjie. North Renfrew Times Brainstorm columnist; Senior Research Scientist, Petawawa National Forestry Institute. Graduated 1949, Forestry DR GWILYM MAELOR DAVIES Cyn-ddarlithydd mewn amaethyddiaeth a bioleg, bu farw yn sydyn ond yn dawel yn ei gartref ar 30 Ionawr Former lecturer in agriculture and biology, he died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on 30 January WILLIAM PARRY ( ) William Parry devoted his working life to educating the minds of the next generation and in retirement worked to help those in need. Born in Calderstones, Liverpool, he took an Economics honours degree at Bangor and went on to teach the subject. He met, and married, his wife Mary in 1961 at Evered High School, Walton, where he was a Senior Master and she was deputy head. On his retirement the couple moved to Wrexham, and he was asked to be the secretary of what became Wrexham Care Association. From then on he was indefatigable in pursuing the welfare of clients. His work was recognised by the award of a British Empire Medal (BEM). PROFESSOR REGINALD SMITH BRINDLE ( ) For anyone in Britain growing into classical music in the 1960s and 1970s the name of Reginald Smith Brindle was a permanent presence on the contemporary scene. Smith Brindle was born in Lancashire and spent seven years in the army during the Second World War, mainly in Northern Africa and Italy. With demobilisation, his long service entitled him to a three-year rehabilitation grant which he deployed on a BMus course ( ) at Bangor. A fellowship from the University of Wales allowed him to return to Italy in 1949 to study at the Academia Santa Cecilia in Rome and then in Florence. In 1957 he saw an advertisement for a lectureship in music at his Alma Mater, the University College of North Wales and returned to Bangor for 13 years, spending the last three as Professor. Thereafter he was appointed Professor of Music at Surrey University at Guildford, retiring in 1981, during which time, he finished his Second Symphony, Veni Creator, in 1989 and continued to add to his extensive catalogue of guitar and organ music. One of his major innovations was the establishment of a Tonmeister course, the first ever to mix physics and music. HOWARD SLADE Former Building Officer in the Estates Department until his retirement in 1982 on 3 March, he died peacefully at his home on 26 February RAY DELAHUNTY Ray was a conscientious and talented postgraduate at the School of Ocean Sciences, equally popular with staff and his postgraduate colleagues. Everyone who knew him was deeply saddened by his death in July Ray graduated in 1999 with first class honours in Marine Biology and Oceanography. His enthusiasm for the subject, and his love of the location, persuaded him to remain at Menai Bridge and continue his studies. His PhD research into measurements of primary productivity in shelf seas using the Fast Repetition Rate Fluorometer was at an advanced stage; the quality and completeness of Ray s work was such that the School has recommended the award of a posthumous PhD. Ray was far more than a competent and budding scientist. A multi-faceted character, he participated with gusto in every aspect of postgraduate life from the annual raft race to the Liverpool Arms pool team. He was also a very good rock climber and his love of the mountains was obvious to all who shared in those adventures. Ray s life prior to his arrival at Bangor as a mature student was no less varied. His CV boasted spells as a building contractor, wine warehouse manager and motorcycle dispatch rider in London (after which climbing must have seemed relatively safe). The same diversity applied to his musical tastes. Anyone sharing a late night shift on a research cruise could look forward to an eclectic mix of Frank Sinatra, seventies disco and African drum music. A recent memorial evening raised a large sum of money which will enable a Delahunty Prize to be awarded annually to the best first year student of Marine Biology and Oceanography. In addition, a painting has been commissioned that will incorporate all aspects of Ray's life as a student and will hang in the School of Ocean Sciences. Ray will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him. KEVIN HORSBURGH DR DAVID WYNN-WILLIAMS David Wynn-Williams was born in West Kirby in His first degree in Botany and Microbiology in Aberystwyth was followed in 1964 by a PhD on the ecology of nitrogen fixing marine bacteria, under Muriel Rhodes jointly with Bangor University and his contemporaries remember him spending hours working at St.George s Pier. David joined the British Antarctic Survey as a soil microbiologist in 1974 and spent two winters at Signy Island. Under primitive conditions he made the first detailed study of Antarctic microbial populations in relation to carbon respiration. David s work was recognized with the award of a Polar Medal in 1980 for outstanding contributions to Antarctic research and he became the Head of Terrestrial Ecology at BAS in A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society, David promoted Antarctica and its micro-organisms as analogues for extra-terrestial life. It was through his research collaboration with NASA Ames Research Center, the NASA Johnson Space Center and the European Space Agency that he came to be held in the highest regard by the international space research community. He was involved with the Raman Spectroscopy Group at Bradford University in biomolecule identification whilst his polar background contributed important inputs to major papers on the possibility of water and life on Mars and to the debate on the origins of life. At the height of his research powers and having managed to combine all the areas of science and the environment dearest to his heart, he remarked that he was now living out his life s ambition and could scarcely credit his good fortune. We are deeply saddened to hear about David Williams tragic death in a traffic accident whilst he was out jogging on a country road near his Cambridge home. Based on information supplied by the BRITISH ANTARCTIC PRESS AND INFORMATION OFFICE. Reynoldson, a great stalwart of the Department of Zoology and later the School of Animal Biology, on 14 March, aged 89 years. DR EIFION JONES A full obituary for Eifion Jones is included in 'The Bridge' (Ocean Sciences Alumni newsletter). PROFESSOR COLIN EABORN ( ) Born in Churton, Cheshire, Colin Eaborn received his BSc degree from the University College of North Wales, Bangor in His research spanned a remarkably wide range, and the rich variety of courses currently on offer in British universities has been markedly influenced by the imaginative work of Eaborn and others like him in the 1960 s and 1970 s. The integrated School of Chemistry and Molecular Science that Eaborn built up at Sussex provided the ideal inter-disciplinary medium within which the spectroscopic and analytical skills of the physical chemist and the separation techniques of the organic chemist could be brought together to isolate and characterise the first fullerenes, and bring the Nobel Prize to Sir Harry Kroto at Sussex in Eaborn was the third recipient (the first non- American) of the Frederick Stanley Kipling award of the American Chemical Society in 1964, and received the Organo-metallic Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1974, its Ingold Medal in 1976 and the Main Group Award in Renowned for his innovative work and for removing the traditional barriers and subject boundaries within Chemistry he helped to redraw the map of science learning.
