Our mission is to be an advocate for these special kids and provide them and their families with the educational, emotional, and recreational support needed as a result of the long hours of chemotherapy, illness and isolation. Where do we place our trust? The question pertains to so many issues we face each day in our lives. Often we are asked that question, and have to search our souls and reflect on our beliefs to answer. Faith in someone or something dictates where we are willing to place our trust. We, the members of the Board of Directors of Friends of Kids with Cancer, understand what it means to have your trust and the importance of never violating it. Your donations to this charity are accepted with the utmost thanks and with a promise that we will do everything in our power to make certain that the money is allocated wisely and spent in accordance with our mission statement. We are committed to doing everything we can to make the lives of the children we serve, easier, more fulfilling and sometimes fun, the way it is supposed to be. Peter Cohen Served 1997 to 2013 Peter was chair of our inaugural Golf Tournament and was a valued member of the Development, Fundraising and Nominating Committees over the last 17 years. He is an honored Past President of the Board of Directors and also served terms as Secretary, and Vice President. Larry Reimelt Served Larry was one of the original members of the Board of Directors in He is an honored Past President and served faithfully on numerous committees over the years. He developed the concept for the very successful Art from the Heart fundraising event and our new Planned Giving Program among many other accomplishments. Bob Nuelle Served Bob began volunteering for Friends in 2005 and quickly earned his spot on the Board of Directors in His expertise as Co-Chair of the Annual Golf Tournament helped ensure its great success. Bob served on the Fundraising and Development committees and will continue with his favorite volunteer activity delivering lunch to the young patients during their treatments. Welcome New Board Member Merri Cross! Merri Cross Merri is the Manager of Business Development for the Real Estate Practice of Dentons, a global law firm. She began her involvement with Friends as a Fashion Show volunteer in Because of her excellent design skills she was recruited to produce the Fashion Show Yearbook. In 2010 she volunteered for a three year chairmanship for the Fashion Show and worked diligently to make our 20 th Anniversary show a very moving and memorable event. We are looking forward to adding her talents and skills to our devoted Board of Directors. Hockey Heroes: The St. Louis Blues give patients a Power Play! Patient works as NHL Security at the Blues game! One of our patients Dorrian had an awesome night in late-december working as a member of NHL Security during a St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks hockey game. Dorrian went to both the Chicago and St. Louis locker rooms to check that both coaches had everything they needed. He then went to the Officials locker room to see if all the referees and linesmen were ready to go. He got to visit the media booth and even got a couple of autographs. Dorrian was allowed to stand on the ice as the National Anthem was performed. Before the Blues players entered the ice, Dorrian stood by the entrance and got to fist-bump the players. HUGE thanks to Jim Maier and everyone at NHL Security for treating Dorrian to what he called, an unforgettable night. Scoring BIG on and off the ice; we re proud to call the St. Louis Blues our Friends! Randy Girsch, Director of Community Relations, never stops scoring goals with Friends of Kids with Cancer! During Hockey Fights Cancer week, Randy invited some of our families to come and watch the Blues practice. They were given special souvenirs and escorted by Louie to meet the players as they came off the ice. It was Louie s day off, but he still took the time to come up and entertain the kids. Two of our patients, Glenn Markway and Brett Barczewski, along with their Dads, were invited to play with Chris Stewart in the annual St. Louis Blues 14 Fund Golf Classic. They really felt part of the team. In addition to carrying their golf clubs as they left the tournament, they had autographed hockey sticks, a jersey signed by the whole team, pucks and hole flags. The continual efforts of Randy and the entire Blues organization comes from their hearts. The St. Louis Blues 14 Fund, honoring Doug Wickenheiser, has contributed more than $13 million to St. Louis youth charitable organizations; but their donations are much more than dollar signs, they create memories, build self-esteem, fulfill dreams and HELP KIDS WITH CANCER.BE KIDS!

3 A limousine full of toys; what could be better?! The generous people at CBS Sports Radio 920 AM and Insidestl.com held a great toy-drive during the holiday season. After hosting toy drive events at Llywelyn s Pubs all across St. Louis and also at Friendly s Sports Bar, the day to deliver the toys arrived. A group of our patients and their families stood outside the Friends of Kids with Cancer office and gawked in awe as a 20-foot long limousine pulled up with a tremendous amount of trash bags full of new toys! These toys will be used to stock the toys closets in each of the 3 St. Louis Pediatric Oncology Centers. After unloading the large bags of toys, the kids got to take a joy-ride in the humongous limo! This was an amazing afternoon and we thank everyone who donated for thinking about the kids! Proudly sponsored by A great event for a great cause! Assure your foursome through one of the many sponsorship levels or registering online at Golf Tournament The Kelly Hager Group adopts 23 families! The 2013 holiday season quickly came and went like it usually does, but not without some holiday acts of kindness. The Kelly Hager Group, a St. Louis real estate services company, hosted an Adopt-A-Family program and adopted 23 families from Friends of Kids with Cancer for the holidays and their efforts were amazing! After weeks of shopping and planning, the delivery day arrived. Employees and friends drove up with 5 large trucks/cars to deliver the gifts for these families. The Kelly Hager Group estimates the value of all gifts purchased for the families to total around $52,000! Having a child going through cancer treatment can affect a family s ability to purchase presents for the holidays and also makes it hard to find the time to go out and purchase gifts at all. One family wrote: I would like to say thank you for making our Christmas so wonderful. It s good to know that there are some caring people out there. You put big smiles on my children s faces. God Bless. Thank you! Local company surprises two families! In December, the generous folks at Gapsch CARSTAR Collision Center hosted an amazing event called Cars 4 Kids. The workers and mechanics at Gapsch refurbished two damaged cars and donated the cars to two preselected families from Friends of Kids with Cancer! Driving to-and-from the hospital for a child s treatment for cancer can become pretty costly with gas and basic maintenance and inconvenient if a car is not available. The cars donated to these families will be a tremendous help in getting their child to treatment. We are so grateful to everyone at Gapsch CARSTAR for organizing the presentation. We can t say THANK YOU enough to all the workers who put in the overtime and worked on Sundays to help some of our families in-need. Your group is so kind and we re grateful to call you our Friends. Also, thank you to CBS Sports Radio 920-AM and Insidestl.com for emceeing the car presentation. This was truly an emotional day for the families to receive such amazing gifts. 4 Our Young Professionals Group We are young professionals and with the joys of childhood still fresh in our minds, we support Friends of Kids with Cancer in exciting and unique ways. Our Mission is to provide an enthusiastic and energetic base of young professional supporters and future leaders for Friends of Kids with Cancer. In 2013, Ticket Donations amounted to nearly $40,000! You sent our patients to musicals, plays, Six Flags, concerts, circus shows, ice skating shows, monster truck shows, Cardinals/Blues/ Rams games and more! Thanks to everyone who sent our patients and their families to all these great events! 2014 Young Friends Events VooDoo in the Lou Masquerade Ball Raises $14,000! Held at the Thaxton Speakeasy on January 25, this inaugural event was a tremendous success and an absolute ball! Thank you to the event committee, sponsors and attendees for all of your support. Young Friends will be selling tickets to the Cardinals vs. Giants on June 1 at 1:15 p.m. Cost is $25 per ticket. Seats are located in the 1st Base Loge and the Right Field Loge. 5 Program Spotlight: Special Assistance Often serving as an introduction for newcomers to Friends, our Special Assistance Program gives kids in treatment for cancer and blood-related diseases an ANNUAL gift or gift card valued at $200-$300. All requests are recommended by medical professionals at each treatment center. Gifts have been for everything from a shopping spree to hockey league memberships! Mail Memos: Thank You Notes from the people you help: This program has been instrumental to carrying out the Friends mission. It truly helps kids with cancer be kids! So many smiles have been created through the special gifts it provides and gives these special kids something exciting to look forward to. Local schools participate in Hats on Day fundraiser Any school located in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area is eligible to have a Hats on Day fundraiser for Friends of Kids with Cancer. It s SUPER easy! Students and teachers at school decide to collect a donation per student for the privilege to wear a hat at school on that day. The money collected from that Hats on Day is then donated back to Friends. If your school would like to participate in this fundraiser, please visit our website and complete the Hats on Day request form: Henry Elementary School...Adults can participate too! Vianney High School Schools aren t the only places that can have easy fundraisers. Whether or not hats are allowed in your office, you have great opportunities to fundraise for Friends of Kids with Cancer! Many of your companies already participate in weekly/monthly Jeans Days and/or Dress-Down Days for a small donation. Friends of Kids with Cancer would LOVE to be one of the organizations to accept the donation. I also would like to thank Margie specifically for making sure Wyatt had a great time today. She was nothing short of spectacular today! -Brandon Tanner had great time seeing his first NFL game. Was bummed the Rams lost. Please thank the ticket holders for donating them, they helped fill Tanner s bucket list. Only was able to get two pictures due to battery issues but I m going to try to attach them. Thank you so very much for helping me fulfill his wish list. Sincerely -Donna I just want to thank you so much for blessing you gave me today. I am in complete and utter shock and I do not know why God choose us but he did. I often have this same question when I ask him why my child...why, as I know so many parents do...but I do know that ad-mist the storms there are blessings. And I am truly and humbly thankful for this news. May God continue to bless you and the foundation. I plan on making a donation for the foundation and my church on the down payment I was going to use towards my car. It will be at the end of this year...but I will make it. You have my word. Sponsored by Young Friends of Kids with Cancer Service Project Mom s Group Paints the Night Away The Friends of Kids with Cancer Mom s Night Out Program started so that moms who completely understand one another can get together. It is not intended to be a therapy session, but there is both crying and laughing. All of the moms can get together without any pressure to explain themselves and it is a welcoming environment. It is also a break from their daily lives. The most recent outing took place at Pinot s Palette in Chesterfield, MO. The mothers got to enjoy a night away from home, enjoying some wine and painting the night away. In previous gatherings, the mothers have learned how to make professional cakes, learned how to make and eat fancy chocolate and even did some yoga.
