2 Iowa City Hospice s Mission is to be the leaders in providing exceptional patient-centered palliative care and grief support to anyone affected by a terminal illness. Iowa City Hospice s Principle of Practice As a community-oriented, not for profit organization, Iowa City Hospice is dedicated to offering services to everyone regardless of an individual s ability to pay. Recognizing Those Who Are Called to Duty At the Walk for Dignity site are two Iowa City Hospice Tribute Walls that recognize our most generous donors from the past three decades. Honorary Walk for Dignity Families, Estate Gifts, and exceptionally generous Memorials are also recognized. The Tribute Walls were made possible through a generous gift from Hills Bank and Trust Company and in-kind support from Watts Vault & Monument Company. On the cover: Pictured are the faces of military veterans who have served our country. The 2016 Walk for Dignity Family will be all our veterans past and present

3 Dear Friend of Iowa City Hospice, We extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to Iowa City Hospice with your time and gifts this past year. With your help and support, we provided 1,353 days of community supported care this past year. Our 2016 Walk for Dignity family will be the veterans we honor every day, represented by Gary Boseneiler. Gary has a distinguished history as an Iowa City Hospice volunteer and tireless advocate for our area veterans. One of the programs Iowa City Hospice is proud to offer is We Honor Veterans, a hospice program sponsored by the Department of Veteran Affairs. We Honor Veterans supports trained veterans who provide comfort and support to veterans in hospice care. Veterans share special memories that can only be appreciated by fellow vets. Being able to relive these memories at the end of life is a way to honor the sacrifices that our vets have made. In addition to this, Iowa City Hospice is proud to have been chosen as a demonstration hospice agency for the Medicare Care Choices Model. This program, called Care Choices, is for individuals who qualify for hospice care but who choose to continue curative treatment. This is a unique opportunity that would not be possible were it not for our reputation. Our reputation is built on the dedication and passion of our remarkable staff, our devoted volunteers and our exceedingly generous donors! Everyone is invited to join us for the annual Iowa City Hospice Walk for Dignity on April 24 at Willow Creek Park. Your past support has been a key to our continued financial success and is greatly appreciated. We look forward to welcoming you again in April and with your help to many more years of providing the Iowa City-Coralville community and surrounding counties with the very best in hospice care without regard for one s ability to pay. 4 Answering the Needs of our Veterans Gary Boseneiler s passion for working with military veterans is plain to see seven days a week. As Johnson County Director of Veteran Affairs, Gary helps connect local veterans with a myriad services. In his office, stained glass art created by daughter, Blake, illustrates Gary s own military service: 21 years in the U.S. Air Force. But even in his free time Gary expresses this same passion honoring terminally ill veterans for their careers or sitting at the bedside of veterans in their final hours. Gary is one of several local volunteers, veterans themselves, involved with the Iowa City Hospice initiative We Honor Veterans. The program is a collaboration between the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Its goal: to recognize the unique needs of American veterans and their families and to support them through a peaceful end of life. Iowa City Hospice is a Level 3 Partner with We Honor Veterans, putting to use the program s resources and best practices for local patients and families. A key part of We Honor Veterans is a home visit where an Iowa City Hospice volunteer presents a certificate to the veteran. More than just a piece of paper, the certificate provides thanks and acknowledgement of veterans sacrifices. It can have a powerful impact. In one case, the family of a Vietnam veteran reported that he had never been thanked for his service. It often brings tears to people s eyes when we visit and present the certificate, says Gary, and families especially appreciate seeing their loved one honored. We Honor Veterans also provides a listening ear when desired. Iowa City Hospice volunteer coordinator, Ann Coe, says a terminal illness often triggers a review of one s life. And for a military veteran, this review can take on unique dimensions. It s amazing that veterans who have been mute about their military experiences for years often want to tell their stories at the end of life, says Gary. They may share things they ve never talked about before. And even after many years, their memories can be very vivid and detailed and personal. Gary and his fellow We Honor Veterans volunteers may meet with a veteran and family for five minutes or for an hour or they may begin an ongoing relationship. Gary reports that he hears many funny stories from hospice patients perhaps about stealing a Jeep or meeting up with girls. But other stories recount hand-to-hand combat or long-buried traumas powerful memories that can resurface at the end of life. Veterans are people who raised their hand at one time and said, Yes, I ll volunteer my life for my country. I want to show respect for that and I don t want to see veterans die alone, says Gary. The professionalism and the compassion of the whole [Iowa City Hospice] team are extraordinary, he continues. I brag about this program all the time. I m very proud and honored to be part of Iowa City Hospice. 6 Learning and Leadership go hand in hand Mike Messier joined the Iowa City Hospice board in 2008, bringing leadership experience, a strong business background and a knack for asking tough questions. When a good friend approached me [about becoming a board member], I already had some familiarity with Iowa City Hospice, he says. I probably knew just enough to be dangerous. Since then, Mike s personal learning curve has included his own grandmother s supportive experience of hospice care in Illinois; he has found his appreciation of hospice services deepening every year. I ve never known such a dedicated, devoted group of people as Iowa City Hospice staff and volunteers, he says. When you think of what they do, the care they provide and it s always with a smile you realize they are a special group of human beings. As a board member and recent board president, Mike takes a broad view of Iowa City Hospice. He has seen the unique obstacles and issues in the field of hospice care and he likes to counter misconceptions about it. Mike says people often do not realize the depth of medical knowledge available through Iowa City Hospice and the keen understanding of pain management that is brought to bear for patients. Mike s wife, Mitsi, who has often walked alongside Mike in the annual Walk for Dignity, is equally passionate about another group served by Hospice family members. Mitsi lost both of her parents without the benefit of Hospice and is moved by the contrast. The family support that Hospice provides is critical, she says. There are so many decisions that families have to make about illness and the end of life. The Hospice staff counsels loved ones on what to expect about what s normal and what is not. You can t measure how valuable that is. There is a very caring attitude with a nonprofit, Mike adds. At the same time, he points out that there are financial challenges. But smart stewardship and tremendous community support make it possible for Iowa City Hospice to continue its compassionate work. Mike completed his term as Iowa City Hospice board president in January 2016 and continues his service now as past president. This is a very active board, with great members, Mike adds. It s the most satisfying board experience I ve ever had. I can t think of anything that would be asked of Iowa City Hospice that they wouldn t do. Ways to Make a Gift Annual appeal Each fall, Iowa City Hospice conducts an Annual Appeal campaign. Your Annual Appeal gift may be directed in a way that is meaningful to you including patient care, alternative therapies, staff education or the Endowment Fund. Walk for Dignity The annual Walk for Dignity is held each spring on the fourth Sunday in April at 1 p.m. in Willow Creek Park. All are welcome to attend, enjoy the celebration of life and generate support for Iowa City Hospice. Many families that have been served by Iowa City Hospice form teams in memory of their loved ones. This is a wonderful way to provide critical support for patient care and bereavement services. Businesses may become Walk Sponsors.
