3 Dear Friends, Message from the Chairman and President What s your favorite destination in Acadia? Maybe you look forward to attaining the expansive summit of Sargent Mountain each August. Maybe you love to drive the Loop Road up to Otter Point, where the view opens wide on the Gulf of Maine. You park your car and walk to the brink breathe deeply the pure ocean air and let that perfect horizon line infiltrate your soul. And then what? If you peel yourself from Sargent s sun-baked ledges and head down toward Gilmore Peak, was Sargent the destination or a starting point for another great hike? With 2016 behind us, we can feel this shift: Acadia s centennial year wasn t the ending point after all, but the beginning of the next big journey. Not to downplay the importance of Between the beyond-all-expectations success of the Acadia Centennial celebration and the tremendous response to our Second Century Campaign, which passed the $25 million goal in the final days of December, Friends of Acadia couldn t be better equipped for what lies ahead. In particular, the great people we had the privilege of working with last year means more friends for Acadia, bringing more skills, more ideas, and more enthusiasm to help solve the park s most pressing and significant challenges. Interest in Acadia and our national parks is at an all-time high, for better and for worse. Record visitation, overloaded parking lots, hikers wandering off-trail to find their own peaceful corner of Acadia we can see these examples as problems, or view them as indications of how much people love this very special place on the coast of Maine. Fortunately, 2016 has given us the tools and investment needed to turn perceived threats into positive outcomes for our beloved park. With thanks to our members, donors, and volunteers and as described in the following pages Friends of Acadia ended the year on solid ground, fiscally and organizationally. 5 Connecting Kids to Acadia It should come as no surprise that kids who spend time outdoors and in nature feel more comfortable with the natural world. And kids who visit national parks will tend to grow up feeling more connected to these national treasures and inspired to protect them. So it was exciting for Friends of Acadia and Acadia National Park to be able to partner to bring more schoolchildren to Acadia an especially kid-friendly park with the help of two federal programs established in connection with the National Park Service centennial. Every Kid in a Park was established by President Obama to provide free national park entrance passes to all 4th-graders and their families. But many families in Maine live far from Acadia and may be unable to visit without additional help and motivation. Friends of Acadia established the Yellow Bus Fund in 2015 to provide transportation scholarships for Maine teachers to bring their students to Acadia, where they can participate in ranger-led activities and experience Acadia s beauty and recreational opportunities. To leverage this program to benefit more kids, Acadia secured a 2016 Centennial Challenge grant to allow expanded outreach to schools and enable rangers to provide more programs to 4th-grade classes. Congress piloted the Centennial Challenge grants to increase public-private partnerships in the national parks; all grants awarded must be matched by a private funding source. Acadia was awarded $32,864, which FOA matched through two grants to the park: $25,000 for an educational ranger and $8,000 for Yellow Bus scholarships. As a result, the Yellow Bus Fund brought more than 750 students from 14 schools to Acadia in 2016, doubling the program over the previous year. Park staff made a special effort to connect with school districts they didn t already have a relationship with, and many of the students had never seen Acadia or even the ocean before. After their visit, many were excited to tell about the many firsts they had experienced, and also observed how topics they had studied in the classroom were more meaningful after seeing them first-hand in Acadia. The 4th-graders received their free Every Kid in a Park entrance passes during their trip, and anecdotal reports suggest that many returned to Acadia with their families. 4th graders identify marine life as part of a boat tour of Frenchman Bay sponsored by FOA through the Every Kid in a Park program. In a positive footnote, the Centennial Challenge grants were made permanent with the passage of the National Park Service Centennial Act in December 2016, and Friends of Acadia was part of National Parks 2nd Century Action Coalition that pushed for that legislation. 3

7 In its 18 th year serving Acadia s visitors and area residents, the Island Explorer bus system saw record ridership in 2016 with 575,397 passengers. This, in spite of hiring challenges that made it difficult to find the requisite number of qualified bus drivers available for seasonal work. The free, propane-powered buses continue to take auto pressure off Acadia s roads and parking lots in addition to offering visitors great options for getting into the park, like point-to-point hiking and biking or a way for teens and others without a car to get into the park independently. Expanded service on the Schoodic Peninsula is also helping the park to better serve visitors at the new Schoodic Woods campground and day-use area. The system s value was more broadly recognized when the Island Explorer received a 2016 Northern Star of the Northeast Outstanding Clean Cities Stakeholders Recognition Award. With such ongoing success, Friends of Acadia is grateful that L.L.Bean renewed its long-standing commitment to the Island Explorer last summer, pledging an additional $1 million over the next five years. L.L.Bean s steady support has been vital to the growth of the system, providing critically needed funding that is matched by a transit fee incorporated into Acadia National Park entrance passes, funding from the Maine Department of Transportation, and contributions from area towns, businesses with scheduled stops, and passengers who donate while on the bus. The Island Explorer will be one important piece of Acadia National Park s transportation plan, scheduled to be complete in With visitation to Acadia rising by 10 15% annually, and iconic sites like Cadillac Mountain facing vehicular gridlock at peak times, park officials have embarked on an in-depth transportation plan for the first time in recent park history. Friends of Acadia is providing critical funding and staff support to allow the park to gather data, model visitor use, pilot new approaches, and improve visitors experiences while the planning process is underway. The Cadillac Summit Stewards, in one small but impactful project, were able to take hundreds of photographs of auto and foot traffic on the Cadillac Summit at different times of day throughout the summer and fall. This baseline data will help inform the transportation planning process. 5

9 The idea of a conservation corps is to put a group of people, usually young and untested, to work on projects on outdoor public places so that both the place and the workers benefit. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s helped many young men and their families escape the poverty of the Great Depression; the trails they built for Acadia are esteemed for exquisite rock work and fabulous vistas. And the Acadia Youth Conservation Corps (AYCC), formed in the 1960s and made permanent in 1999 as part of the Acadia Trails Forever Endowment, provides a summer job to 16 teens each year. They receive training in trail-building and other skills, and their annual contributions are considered absolutely essential to the park s professional trail crew. Partnering to Restore Acadia s Trails The two corps collaborated across the decades last summer, when the AYCC focused their efforts on trails at Beech Mountain that had all been constructed by the CCC: Beech Cliff Trail, the Beech West Ridge Trail, the Canada Cliffs Trail, and the Beech Cliffs Loop. The AYCC s contributions to these projects included highlining huge granite stair treads to build a new set stairs (their favorite new skill) and carrying 6x6x12 logs up the trail without which, ANP Trails Foreman Gary Stellpflug asserts, the trailwork would not have been done. It takes many collaborations to maintain Acadia s historic trail system, and Stellpflug s leadership is key to their success. An artist and a historian of the trails, he and his team begin each project with careful research into the original appearance and layout of the trail examining old photographs for construction details, reviewing historic maps, and drawing on his deep knowledge of the distinctive styles of each era of Acadia trail construction. Stellpflug describes Beech Cliff Loop and the West Bridge trail as CCC textbook examples. In the case of the loop, the project included reopening a short arc of original trail that had been inexplicably abandoned at some point in favor of a longer route though mud, over lichens, with no views whatsoever. In the case of West Ridge where it parallels Long Pond, over 80 years the trail had essentially eroded into the pond. They could move the trail away from the water s edge, losing the intimate pondside experience, but instead chose rustic boardwalk that was stylistically in keeping with Acadia s trails from that time. The work of Acadia s professional crew is significantly supported by the Acadia Trails Forever Endowment. For eighteen years, ATF has provided funding to maintain the park s incomparable trail system. In addition, careful financial stewardship and creative leveraging have extended funding for trail construction and rehabilitation far beyond the original ten-year workplan so we continue to enjoy newly-opened trails, exciting new connectors, or old favorites born anew each summer. ATF also supports Friends of Acadia s large volunteer program, which, alongside the AYCC, is indispensable to the park s professional crew. Last summer FOA stepped up the volunteer program by adding a third seasonal stewardship staff member to meet increased interest from local trail-lovers, Acadia visitors, and organizations from youth groups to hiking clubs. 10 Accomplishments PARTNERING FOR A WILDER ACADIA If you cut back an invasive plant this year but let it be next year, it will likely just grow back; if you take a few water-quality measurements but don t continue at regular intervals, the data won t tell you much. That s why consistent support is so essential to these two efforts at Acadia, and why the commitment of corporate partner Canon U.S.A. to the Wild Acadia program is an enormous gift to the park. As a result, both projects the Exotic Plant Management Team and the Jordan Pond water-testing buoy have become national models for this level of resource protection. To celebrate the partnership, representatives from Canon visited Acadia last summer to view these and other Wild Acadia projects in the field. In the fall, Canon committed for a fifth year of support. COMPLETING ACADIA Friends of Acadia and Maine Coast Heritage Trust have partnered for many years to purchase privately held lands from willing sellers within the legislated boundaries of Acadia National Park and hold them until the park receives funding to purchase them and incorporate them into the park. Three parcels on Seal Cove Pond, Round Pond, and in the Northeast Creek watershed were purchased from the partners in 2016 with a $2.5 million Land and Water Conservation Fund appropriation to the park. These parcels are important for water quality protection, wildlife habitat connectivity, and scenic preservation. 11 TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO ENGAGE YOUTH The Acadia Youth Technology Team took a new approach in 2016, focusing on high-quality photography and videography for use on the park s social media channels and in park and FOA publications. The group including four teens and a team leader captured hundreds of stunning images from all over Acadia, logging multiple overnights and pre-dawn shoots. Their final video presentation caught the eye of staff at the Department of the Interior; it was posted on the DOI website along with a blog by team member and aspiring filmmaker Emma Forthofer about the impact of her AYTT experience. ACADIA QUEST GOES DIGITAL Taking inspiration from the tagline of the Acadia Centennial celebration, the Acadia Centennial Quest offered teams of kids and their families many new adventures to celebrate our past and inspire our future and one of the ways we inspired and embraced the future was through the launch of the Digital Quest through the Chimani Acadia app for smart phones. Friends of Acadia partnered with Chimani on the app, which teams can use to select Quest challenges and find their corresponding locations in the park. For each challenge completed, a team earns a digital badge that can be shared on social media. Many of the 300 registered Centennial Quest teams did just that sharing their adventures in Acadia with a whole new set of friends. 12 Accomplishments WILD GARDENS FENCING Closing up the Wild Gardens of Acadia last fall was much easier than in the past, thanks to permanent deer fencing installed around the entire perimeter. Previously, Wild Gardens volunteers spent many hours placing cages over at-risk plants and encircling particularly vulnerable habitats, like the mountain, with temporary fencing. Despite these efforts, native white-tailed deer continued to cause damage. The Wild Gardens Committee worked with the National Park Service on a fence design that was sensitive to wildlife and the historic setting of Sieur de Monts. BETTER WINTER TRAILS The volunteers of the Acadia Winter Trails Association had long known that they needed a larger machine to complement the traditional snowmobiles and help keep the carriage roads groomed and visitors and volunteers safe during the winter season. Their research led to the purchase of a Kubota 1100 series UTV with tracks and an enclosed cab. The Kubota is the right size for the carriage roads, is easy to maintain, is comfortable (and warm!) to operate, and greatly reduces the wear and tear on the snowmobiles after a heavy snowfall. Initial testing and use are showing it to be a great fit for the program. In addition, the Kubota can be used for MDI Search and Rescue in Acadia and for carriage road maintenance in the summer, as the tracks can be switched out with wheels. The UTV was paid for using funds from the Elizabeth R. Bright Endowment, the Carriage Road Endowment, and community donations. 10 CENTENNIAL BOOKS Three book projects served to further FOA s mission to promote stewardship of Acadia, by increasing awareness for the park s unique features and its long history of private philanthropy and volunteerism. During Acadia s centennial year, FOA published Creating Acadia National Park: The Biography of George Bucknam Dorr by historian Ronald H. Epp and partnered to publish Acadia National Park: A Centennial Celebration by photographer Tom Blagden Jr., both to critical acclaim. The Wild Gardens of Acadia by longtime Wild Gardens volunteers Anne Kozak and Sue Leiter was likewise warmly received, and the authors royalties from the book will be donated to FOA.

13 Second Century Campaign Today is the first day of Acadia s second century. When these words were spoken on July 8, 2016 as part of the Friends of Acadia Annual Meeting in Bar Harbor, the excitement in the room was palpable. As hundreds of members, volunteers, donors, and friends packed the room, it was the perfect day to announce progress on the most ambitious undertaking in Friends of Acadia s history: the Second Century Campaign, with a goal to raise $25 million to help Acadia tackle the key challenges facing our park ensuring a high quality visitor experience, preserving Acadia s natural resources, engaging more youth in the park, and caring for the trails and carriage roads. Campaign dollars have been put to work immediately in the park. At Cadillac Mountain, FOA helped to inventory rare plant species, conducted visitor use research and modeling to inform future park solutions to overcrowding, and created the seasonal Summit Stewards positions to put a consistent interpretive presence on the summit. At Cromwell Brook and the Great Meadow, FOA helped the park take a watershed-based approach to making the park s natural communities as healthy and resilient as possible in the face of future stresses brought on by our changing climate. After a busy summer season of work in the park, we continued our fundraising efforts to reach our goal of $25 million before year s end. With more than 750 donors and gifts ranging from $5 to $5 million dollars, we reached our $25 million target on December 29. It is with great appreciation for our members, donors, and volunteers that we celebrate all that was accomplished in 2016, and the bright future for the years to come, made possible by the love and appreciation for this magnificent place Acadia.
