Each time my role has changed it has given me another perspective on the incomparable SEM community I have the privilege to lead. Students and faculty, families, friends, trustees, and alumnae all have different points of connection with the school yet they have one commonality: commitment to our 168-year-old mission to provide young women with the education and experience they need today, to be the engaged citizens of tomorrow Income and Designation 1.2% Summer at SEM $88,030 Thank you for your care and support. Because of you, we exceeded our Annual Fund goal and raised over $520,000. An additional $1,000,000 was raised through endowment funds, targeted gifts, and bequests. By all financial indications the year was a success, but more importantly success is evident in the girls themselves. SEM girls are confident, they are resilient, they are open-hearted, engaged, and of course, they are well-educated, just as their alumnae sisters were, and are. A snapshot: This fall, our girls volunteered for the John R. Oishei Children s Hospital move - doing everything from stocking crash carts to filling totes with necessities for patients; they managed a school blood drive; and they collected supplies for the relief effort in Puerto Rico. Our small school has three sports teams competing in fall championships; A Model UN club appearing at its first Canisius College competition; and a Ping Pong club playing in adult competitions and going to finals! At a recent morning meeting, a senior gave a presentation which was laced with humor and references to Moby-Dick (a study of the novel is a new elective). She described her evolution from a disengaged and staring-out-the-window freshman at another school to now - a student aimed at a career in the foreign service. At SEM, she said, she conquered her fear of language - struggling until she succeeded with two! 3 1 2 3 events SEM Fall Play Afflicted: Daughters of Salem November Students, parents, friends, faculty, and alumnae are invited to see SEM s production of playwright Laurie Brooks s telling of the infamous Salem witch trials. The play examines how teenage girls became accusers and caused 20 people to be put to death for witching. Grandparent Morning November 21 Don t let grandparents miss the fun at SEM as granddaughters show off why they love their school. This special day includes performances, cookies and coffee, a granddaughter/ grandparent family picture, and the opportunity to be interviewed by granddaughters as part of StoryCorps national oral history project, "The Great Thanksgiving Listen." Ansie Silverman Baird 55 Poetry Award For more than 3 decades as SEM s Poet-in-Residence, Ansie Silverman Baird 55 presided over the Sophomore Poetry Workshop and accompanying Betty McNulty Wilkinson 25 poetry reading in the chapel. Each winter, Ansie taught poetry around a Harkness table and coaxed poems out of even the most reticent girl. For her devotion to poetry, SEM, the SEM English department, and SEM girls, we christened the Ansie Baird 55 Poetry Award for students. Each year Ansie worked closely with the English department to select the Wilkinson poet, whose appearance serves as a finale to the winter poetry workshop. In 2014, that poet was Buffalonian and Canisius College professor Janet McNally. Ms. McNally now has Ansie s shoes to fill as she becomes SEM s Poet-in-Residence. In the library, daughters Sarah M. First Ever Residential Family Commencement Dinner Head of School Helen L. Marlette, Board Chair Margaret Brown 72, and Trustee and 2017 commencement speaker Virginia Schaefer Horvath 75 joined newly minted SEM graduates Angela Shi (left) and Catherine Wang (right) and their families after commencement for a celebratory dinner. The graduates were feted at Patina 250 in the brand new corporate headquarters of Delaware North in downtown Buffalo. All enjoyed an evening of conversation and celebration. Sweet 66 Feeling sentimental about the Class of 2017, we threw a party in our city backyard. It was a huge success! The girls and their parents mixed with teachers, all of whom wanted to say good-bye to each other. What made it out of the ordinary and particularly fun was that it was off-campus. SEM pendants are here! June 1, 2017 The party had another success - because it was was held in early June, just before the close of the Annual Fund on June 30, the parents of the class participated in a $15,000 alumna match challenge that helped SEM s Annual Fund surpass its goal. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to have the party and worked out so well that we hope we launched a year-end tradition for classes to come. Fun with, and for, the SEM community is a nice last memory as a parent. In collaboration with Erik Jewelers, the BSAA has created an heirloom quality pendant - our venerable seal in silver ($125), 14K yellow or white gold ($650).
