2 Historical Sketch On November 14, 1886, the first Lutheran service was conducted in Hinsdale in the old Fullersburg schoolhouse. Dr. E. A. Krauss, president of Concordia Teachers College, presided over the service. In January of 1887, Rev. John Strieter of Immanuel, Hillside, began conducting bi-monthly services for the Hinsdale community. The community responded with much enthusiasm to these services and on April 15, 1888, a congregation, newly named Zion, was officially formed, with 21 members signing the charter. Elected as Elders and trustees were Fred Huenke, Fred Tunk, Henry Rev. John Strieter Papenhausen, and Karl Strandt. A vacant lot at Vine and Second Streets was purchased for the purpose of building a house of worship. The church, complete with tower and bell, was completed for the cost of $2,515, $1,000 of which was raised by the small congregation. The building was dedicated on October 14, In 1889, five acres of land north of Hinsdale were purchased at a cost of $ to be used as a cemetery for Zion. By 1890, there were 170 communicant members of Zion, and it was felt that a resident pastor was needed. Zion s first pastoral call was made to Rev. John F. C. Molthan of North Judson, Indiana, and he was installed on Sunday, June 1, In September of 1890, Zion s Christian Day School Rev. John Molthan was opened with 17 students enrolled. Pastor Molthan was the sole teacher. Not long after the school was opened, both a parsonage and school building were built. The following year, 1891, the congregation became affiliated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. 2

3 The congregation and school enrollment continued to increase in numbers, and in 1894, Zion s first teacher, Mr. Nicholas Roemer, was called to assist the pastor. Sixty-five children were enrolled in the school that year. Mr. Roemer taught at Zion for two years and was then succeeded by Mr. Herman Lemke who came from Sioux City, Iowa. From Mr. Adolph Kastner had charge of the school; and after him came Mr. Theo A. Meyer of Mishawaka, Indiana. In September of 1901, Pastor Molthan left Zion to accept a call to Genoa, Illinois. During Pastor Molthan s tenure, the congregation increased from 170 to 350 communicant members. A call was extended to Rev. H. C. Guebert of Baldwin, Illinois. He was installed on October 27, In 1906, Paul Streufert was called from St. Mark in Chicago to take charge of the school. It was at that time, Zion s first woman teacher was hired Miss Minnie Kohn. In 1907, through the efforts of Pastor Guebert, preaching services were begun in Downers Grove, resulting in the eventual organization of Immanuel Lutheran Church. By 1908, the school enrollment had grown to 90 students, taught by Pastor Guebert, Mr. Paul Streufert and Miss Minnie Kohn. Also in 1908, one English worship service a month was added to the schedule, and as enthusiasm for this service grew, English and German services were conducted alternately in the morning and afternoon. In 1912, Mr. Streufert was succeeded by L. T. Kneif. The congregation celebrated its 25 th anniversary on April 20, A resolution was passed to build a new house of worship on the southwest corner of Grant and Second Streets, purchased in The new church was completed for the cost of $23,481. Dedication was on March 14, The benches of the old church were donated to a mission congregation in Bellwood, Illinois (St. John s) and the bell to Trinity Congregation, two miles northwest of Willow Springs. By 1920, an 18 foot addition was added to the school at a cost of $550, more English was placed into the curriculum, German writing and grammar were gradually being phased out and the Sunday school was organized. By 1922, there were two morning services, one in English and one in German. Pastor Guebert left Zion on March 12, after more than 22 years of faithful service and moved to Oak Park, Illinois. 3 Rev. Rev. H. C. Guebert

4 Communicant membership had grown from 350 members to 460. On May 21, 1922, Pastor Theo. W. Strieter, a former missionary in Brazil, was installed as Zion s third pastor. The old church building was remodeled into two classrooms to house the 120 students In 1923 all German language was discontinued in the school program, and mission work was begun by Pastor Rev. Theo. Strieter Strieter in Westmont, Western Springs, and Naperville. Teachers at that time were Miss Clara Ebert, Miss L. Pfotenhauer, R. J. Schultz, Miss Viola Gotsch, Miss Ethel Fischer, Hugo Oldsen, A. W. Ladwig, H. J. Heyne, Miss Mildred Boger, Miss Paula Schmidt, Mrs. A. W. Ladwig, Luther Mueller, and Miss Elfrieda Timm. On March 16, 1922, six voting members of Zion were released to organize an all-english congregation across town, which was named Redeemer Lutheran Church. It joined the English District of the Missouri Synod. Rev. Carl F. Dankworth was installed at Redeemer on September 3, In 1924, Zion congregation was incorporated according to the laws of Illinois, and its official name became Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The name was changed in 1951 to Zion Lutheran Church, as Evangelical was dropped. Mr. H. J. Heyne of Bremen Kansas was installed as principal on May 4, By 1929, the school enrollment had reached 133, and a resolution was passed to build a new school building. The school was completed at a cost of $40,000 and was dedicated on September 13, Soon after the dedication of the new school, Pastor Strieter was released from his call and Zion s fourth pastor, Rev. Arthur H. Werfelmann of Glenview, Illinois was installed on December 31, As these were trying years of the Depression Era, the congregation soon faced a $39,000 debt. The financial stress existed throughout the Lutheran Church Rev. Arthur Werfelmann Missouri Synod. This curtailed the church s world-wide mission program and gave rise to the Lutheran Women s Missionary League. The ladies of Zion, enthusiastic for increased service to the church, joined the Northern Illinois District Lutheran Women s Missionary League in

5 In 1939 the Tre Ore service, a three-hour devotion on the seven words from the cross was introduced as a special feature for Good Friday. Pastor A.H. Werfelmann from Zion officiated and Pastor C.F. He was installed on January 21, 1940, and faithfully served the congregation until his retirement in By 1945, Sunday school enrollment was 170 students. Kindergarten was established and Mrs. Carol Ladwig (Rosain) was hired as the first teacher. Jubilee services were held in April, 1948 to celebrate the 60 th anniversary of the church. In 1950, the time of services was changed to allow for the conducting of Bible Class between the two services and Zion s Altar Guild was formed. The Zion Guild was instrumental in the organization of the Altar Guild Federation of the Chicagoland area and holds charter membership. Also at this time, the Christmas Eve candlelight service replaced the 6:00 am service on Christmas Day. During the year of 1951, $13,000 was received in pledges towards the remodeling of the church. During the remodeling, Church services were moved to the basement of the school. To accommodate the congregation, three English services were held on Sunday mornings and the German service was discontinued. The remodeled church was dedicated on April 12, The entire remodeling program eventually exceeded $100,000 and was paid in full by contributions and interest free loans from members. In 1957, the lot at 208 S. Grant Street was purchased at a cost of $19,000. To be used as a teacherage facility. A special service was also held to commemorate the retirement of Mr. Heyne after 47 years in the teaching ministry, 34 of those here at Zion. Mr. Lloyd Liese was called 5 Rev. P.H. Scheer
