1 FALKIRK ARCHIVES Estate, Family and Personal Papers Finding Aid (O-R) How to use this finding aid Falkirk Archives holds the records of a number of local estates, families and individuals. All have a close connection with the area. Some records have been collected as examples of typical local material, such as ration books and school certificates In this finding aid you will find a list of the records we hold arranged by the name of the estate, family or individual. Each list has a brief introduction to the estate, family or individual, giving some information on their history and their connection with the Falkirk area. You can also search the collections through the website Collections Browser. There are leaflets available which give an introduction to the sources in the Archives for the study of local industrial history, local social history and family history. There are also a number of educational topic source lists which can be consulted by researchers.

2 O'Brien Family Papers The O Brien family were a Falkirk family that emigrated to rth America in the late 19 th century. These photocopies were collected for information on local emigrants. 5 Paxton family papers The Paxton Family lived at 10 Queen St, Falkirk. The parents were William and Janet Paxton. The children Elizabeth, William, James, Alexander and John all attended Victoria school with John going on to attend Falkirk High School where he attained qualifications in Chemical Science and Mathematics. The eldest son William Paxton was, after leaving school, employed by Grahamston & Bainsford Co-operative Society as a van man (horse drawn). He enlisted with the 1/7 Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders some time after his 18th birthday probably in late 1917 or early He died on 30 Aug 1918 at 42nd Casualty Clearing Station of wounds sustained at the last battle of Arras. He is buried at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension, 7 1/2 mile north west of Arras, France. 20 Roy family papers William Roy was a timber merchant in Bo'ness. Mrs Margaret Roy or Marshall was possibly the sister of William Roy and was married to Captain James Marshall and they lived in Waggon Road, Bo ness. In 1838 Margaret Roy inherited the estate of her sister, Grace. Assuming his wife would outlive him Captain James Marshall entered into a post-nuptial contract with his wife where he waived his inheritance rights, which meant that on her death he did not automatically inherit her estate. James Roy, baker in Bo ness may have been the brother of William and Margaret. James Roy was married to Agnes Brown.
