Beginning on August 6, at 7 p.m. each evening, parishioners and guests are invited to attend a novena in honor of Our Lady held at St. Jerome Croatian Church, located at 2823 South Princeton. The novena will last for 9 days. Special novena prayers will be recited each evening during the Mass. Several guest priests have been invited to celebrate these novena Masses. Each celebrant will preach on a particular spiritual topic. The culmination of the novena is on Saturday, August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Velika Gospa). On this day St. Jerome Parish will host its annual feast day celebration. This year is the 103rd anniversary of the feast. Throughout these years, parishioners, families, friends and local civic leaders have faithfully participated, thus making this feast day one of Chicago s largest Marian and ethnic celebrations. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. with a religious procession that starts at the corner of 28th and Princeton. The procession winds its way through the Bridgeport/ Armour Square community. Participants include church and religious organizations, visiting clergy, business and civic leaders, several marching bands, colorful floats, and hundreds of the faithful who are devoted to Our Lady. The main focus of the procession is the exquisite painting of Our Lady of Sinj, a replica of the original painting that graces the altar of the main church in the town of Sinj, Croatia, home of this particular devotion to the Blessed Mother. Continuing a longstanding tradition, several young men of the parish will carry the beautiful picture of Mary along the procession route. Following the procession, a Solemn High Mass will be celebrated at noon in the church. Additional Masses will be held at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. A picnic will be held all day on the church grounds. Barbecued lamb and pig will be sold early in the morning. Dinners, sandwiches, and many Croatian specialties will be available throughout the whole day. There will also be continuous Croatian music and dancing, games and entertainment for all, including special children s activities and Bingo. For further information, please call Food Drive for Paws The Food Drive for the Paws Chicago Food bank at the Pulaski Animal Hospital Open house on July 12th was extremely successful. It is amazing what one Boy Scout and one small business can do. The open house was very well attended and over 1,100 pounds of food was collected in 3 short hours. Many more donations were brought to the clinic all week. Pulaski Animal Hospital not only acted as a drop-off for the food they also donated a free nail trim to all pets when the pet owner brought in food. On Saturday July 18th, 2,018 pounds of food was delivered to Paws by Dr. Adam Szpindor, the owner of Pulaski Animal Hospital and Boy Scout Dominic Muth of Troop 418. Susan Robinson, the Community Outreach Manager of Paws Chicago gratefully accepted the donation. There are over 400 families that currently use the food bank for temporary help in feeding their animals when a job is lost or the family is in foreclosure. The idea is to help pet owners keep their pets rather then give them up for adoption. ABC Program at Nativity This ABC program is offered to people who are converting to Catholicism or who are Catholic but never received the sacraments of Communion and/or Confirmation. There is no cost involved. We will begin mid.- September & we ll meet for an hour or so every other Thursday evening, thereafter through Easter. Our group is growing! If you (or someone you know) are interested in receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation please let us know. Weekend Masses at Nativity are celebrated Saturday evenings at 5:00 and Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All are welcome! Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Visits Holy Cross Church On July 24th, 2009 the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile partnered up with Holy Cross Ev. Lutheran Church to help children in need of immunizations and checkups for school. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a service of Advocate Hope Children's Hospital and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. They provide free health screenings and referrals for children with Public Aid or with no insurance coverage. Coordinator Jacqueline Evans and her expert staff made the children feel right at home in their state-ofthe-art medical services vehicle. While enjoying hotdogs and other refreshments, parents and residents were in awe of the generosity of Hope Children's Hospital to provide such a vital and incredible experience benefiting kids in need. Holy Cross and its "We Care" program was thrilled to participate with Hope to bring this wonderful opportunity to Bridgeport. Whether it be blood drives, raising needed supplies for our troops overseas or supporting our Veterans back home, Holy Cross is your community church and we have been looking out for you for nearly 125 years! His friends and family are organizing a fund raiser to help lessen the burden of the significant financial expenses caused by his illness. Bishop Gustavo was ordained a priest on June 22, 1984 and has been Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago since March 19th, Bishop Gustavo oversees all 79 southwest side parishes in Vicariate V. Each Deanery of the Vicariate is hosting an anniversary liturgy. The 17 parishes of Deanery A (Bridgeport, Chinatown, Carnaryville, Back of the Yards, McKinley Park, and Brighton Park) have come together to plan this anniversary celebration, bringing together as one in the Lord the parish faithful from our many communities of faith. Canaryville Veterans Association Fundraiser The Canaryville Veterans Association will be holding their fundraiser Sunday, August 2nd at the Flags Club located at 47th & Wallace.
