2 Purpose of the Sign By-law Fundamental reasons for regulating Signs include: Reduction in visual clutter Ensuring that businesses operate on a level playing field Instilling a sense of pride in our community through recognition Promoting consistency in marketing throughout the City.
3 Recent Changes to the Sign By-law Wall Signs in Commercial/Industrial Plazas o Box Sign uniformity no longer applies when new signage consists of individual channel lettering Garden Square Precinct o Added flexibility for signage on multi-storey buildings facing Garden Square/Rose Theatre Gas Bars o Added flexibility for Corporate branding and promotional advertising beneath gas bar canopies
4 Downtown Brampton A-Frame Sign Pilot Project Pilot Project runs from September 1 to November Businesses within the BIA exempt from the Sign By-law restriction for A-Frame signs on public property A-Frame signs advertising services or wares permitted on City sidewalks in front of the business o One A-Frame sign per storefront removed nightly at the close of business o Size limit of wide x 6 high o Approved by the City (Realty Services and Urban Design)
5 Most Recent Changes for Real Estate Signage 2013 Amendment to extended period for removal of For Sale/Lease signs on private property o 30 days permitted for removal 2011 Amendment to provide added flexibility for the placement of Open House Directional Signs

8 Real Estate Signs For Sale/Lease signs may only be displayed on private property Only one for sale or lease sign shall be permitted for each lot Shall be removed within 30 days after the property is no longer for sale or lease or within 30 days after the property is advertised as sold, whichever occurs first Size Limitations o Residential Properties - 1 m 2 (10.8 ft 2 ) in sign area and 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in height o All other properties - 2 m 2 (21.5 ft 2 ) in sign area and 3.6 m (12 ft) in height
9 Placement of For Sale or For Lease Signs Ok Not Ok
10 Enforcement Any Sold or For Sale/Lease signs found in violation may be removed at the owner expense. We may call the agent or fax an Order to Comply to allow for the sign to be relocated. Failing to comply with this direction would result in the sign being removed at the owners expense. Section 13. (4) Where any sign is erected in contravention of this by-law, the Commissioner may cause such sign to be pulled down or removed at the expense of the owner of the sign.
11 Open House Signs Only permitted during the hours of the open house Shall not be located on a center median of a roadway Shall be located at least 1 m (3.3 ft) from the curb, asphalt or gravel shoulder of a roadway Shall be located at least 0.3 m (1 ft) from a sidewalk Shall only consist of A-frame signs not exceeding 0.35 m 2 (3.75 ft 2 ) in sign area and 0.6 m (2 ft) in height Shall not obstruct or interfere with highway maintenance, pedestrian movement or vehicular traffic or impede the use of utilities or bus stops

14 Enforcement Any open house signs found in violation will be removed at the owner expense. These signs are non-retrievable. A Notice of Violation may be issued for any For Sale/Lease signs found on City property. Section 13. (4) Where any sign is erected in contravention of this by-law, the Commissioner may cause such sign to be pulled down or removed at the expense of the owner of the sign.
