2 LAND TRUSTS AND LAND CONSERVATION Land trusts are private, nonprofit conservation organizations that work with willing landowners to voluntarily protect pristine streams, forests, farms, scenic vistas, and unique MEANS OF PROTECTION (PERCENTAGES OF 371,195 ACRES PROTECTED) natural and cultural places. We protect drinking water sources, air quality and wildlife habitat; partner with community gardens and conserve farms that produce fresh local foods; and help create parks, trails and greenways. The result? Healthier communities for all North Carolinians. Often, land trusts protect lands through conservation agreements (also called easements) voluntary, permanent legal agreements with landowners who retain ownership and use of the land while committing to it not being developed. Land trusts may also buy property outright, or accept donations of land or easements. They often work in partnership with other conservation organizations and government agencies. In response to challenging economic times and changing state demographics, local land trusts are connecting more people especially children with nature, opening more land trust properties to the public, creating alliances with low-income and minority communities that have not traditionally worked with or been served by land trusts, and working with banks to protect foreclosed properties that have high conservation value.
