5 AREA OVERVIEW The subject property is located at 8410 Saint Margaret s Bay Road overlooking the St. Margaret s Bay in the community of Black Point, Halifax County, NS, between the communities of Queensland and Boutilier s Point. Black Point, with a population of 480 people, is one of several small rural communities located along the South Shore Lighthouse Route from Halifax to Yarmouth. This rural community was once a farming, wood harvesting and fishing community settled in the 1800 s. These industries are now mostly extinct in the area and the community mostly consists of single family homes, cottages and the local economy relies on tourism and recreation. Properties of older wood shingled cape and saltbox style houses are located along the route. Newer modern bungalows and vacation homes have since sprung up along Route 333 and ocean-front properties are being developed. 3
