Nokomis Clubhouse Update President s Notebook As discussed in this column in April, the Society exercised the preserve element of our mission this year when we joined with the Nokomis Club in Redmond

3 Nokomis Clubhouse Update President s Notebook As discussed in this column in April, the Society exercised the preserve element of our mission this year when we joined with the Nokomis Club in Redmond to appeal the Determination of Non Significance for the Nokomis clubhouse building issued under the State Environmental Policy Act. The hearing has been held and at the time of this column we re all awaiting the Hearing Examiner s decision (expected Aug. 7). We thank the Nokomis Club President and other club members for the very in-depth investigative work completed in preparation for the appeal. We certainly learned a great deal about historic preservation at the federal, state, county and local levels and the broadly-held views on the historical significance of the Nokomis Building. The Nokomis Club has expressed gratitude for the contributions by the Society in the appeal. As reported in the Redmond Reporter newspaper, Mayor and staff responded to the City Council s request for options on where the building could be moved and at what costs. That report was delivered to the City Council on July 7 and the Council authorized donation of park land as potential sites for the building, if it is moved. We applaud the Council for seeking a way to calm community unrest about demolition of the Nokomis clubhouse building. We appreciate the Mayor and staff for going the extra mile to craft options with hard cost estimates included. Council members also deserve credit for asking about alternate, close-in sites to move the building to, as a part of their deliberations on July 7. Unfortunately, the costs of moving the building to one of the potential park locations and preparing the structure for public use are very high. There are many complexities surrounding the future and final disposition of the Nokomis clubhouse building. Many well-meaning people are trying to coalesce around a solution. Historic preservation takes vision and money. In the end, the future of the Nokomis Building may well be determined by the willingness of private individuals to speak with their checkbooks.
