1 2014 Annual Report Ending hunger together

2 A YEAR OF VISION Every day at the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is exciting because of the constantly changing work we do. We view the challenges that we face as opportunities to improve our service, so we can feed more people in need. In the past year we distributed a record-breaking amount of food through our Community Produce Program, Farm 2 Kids, Food for Children, Extra Helpings, Senior Food Program and Food Assistance Program. We now serve one in eight residents each month, so it was vital that we were able to increase the amount of food we distributed last year to over 20 million pounds. We take pride in the fact that half the food we distributed was fresh produce. To grow our work in the future, we depend on our committed volunteer Board Members to work with our dedicated staff to determine the steps we should take going forward. We have begun a strategic planning process and the first step was to revise our mission statement: Leading the fight to end hunger, in partnership with our community and in service of our neighbors in need. This is an inspiring start to our strategic planning process because our mission acknowledges that hunger is curable. By partnering with our community, we believe we will be able to provide enough food to our neighbors in need so they no longer have to experience hunger. I am optimistic that the creative minds involved in developing this strategic plan will help us develop the steps necessary to turn our mission into a reality. 7 REAL STORIES Your support helps families like Lori s Three years ago Lori went through a very difficult divorce and found herself in financial trouble and needing to take care of her two children (then ages 9 and 11). She worked as a nurse for elderly needing in-home care, but has been unable to work since August because of a disability, which means money is very tight. The healthy vegetables, rice, cereal, apples, sweet potatoes and other staples she gets from the Food Bank are a huge nutritional boost to Lori and her children - and it means she can actually afford to buy meat and milk on occasion. Lori shared her story with guests at Empty Bowls Lori emphasizes that she appreciates every bit of the help she gets, and feels it is teaching her kids how to share, be humble, conquer their fears and not be afraid to ask for help. She says their faces light up on days she picks up food. They are so excited to get the healthy yogurt, fruits and veggies she is able to bring home. Lori hopes people will see that there is little truth to the stereotype that many people take advantage of the system. Those who get food are everyday people, in need of some help. We Did Everything Right Gita and her husband, parents of three, did it right, but still ended up at the Food Bank to supplement their CalFresh benefits. They tell you to go to school, get your degree and the careers will be open, but they weren t, says Gita. She has a psychology degree from University of California at Berkeley and her husband has a full time job: however they are burdened with crushing student loan debt. There is a sense of feeling dependent and I think that s not something any of us want to feel, adds Gita. Gita says her current job, though unpaid, is now at home, We homeschool and that s a full-time job in and of itself. Of the Food Bank she says, It keeps us afloat and at the end of the day, that s what we really need. 7
