4 Francis Frank Allen ~ This Greenwood Baptist Deacon was 76 years old and the oldest Confederate killed in the battle. He was burned beyond recognition in St. Luke s Episcopal Church. He is buried at Greenwood First Baptist Church Cemetery - not in St. Luke s Churchyard. Woodbury Nickels ~ Woody was 16 years old and the youngest Confederate killed. He was shot as he ran out of the burning church. He is said to have fallen on the steps and eventually succumbed to the heat from the fire as he clung to Captain Jesse Robinson s monument in front of the church. He was buried on September 27, 1864, probably in St. Luke s Churchyard. (No known marker.) John C. Carter ~ John was burned to death inside St. Luke s Episcopal Church. He is buried in St. Luke s Churchyard. You may see the new marker procured for him by the SCV in 2011 in section E of the churchyard. Littleton Myrick ~ Was two months shy of his 21 st birthday when he was burned beyond recognition in St. Luke s Church on Sept. 27, He is buried in Section C of the churchyard, on the west side of the walk with inlaid crosses near the north church door. Dr. M.A. Butler ~ Joined the fight with the schoolboys from Greenwood Academy. He was the only Confederate killed in St. Luke s Churchyard after the surrender of Norwood s men. He is buried at Greenwood First Baptist Church Cemetery. Henry O. Bassett ~ This 39 -year-old, former sheriff of Jackson County, was home on leave from his regular unit so was serving with Norwood s Home Guard when he was clubbed and so horribly mutilated with bayonet wounds as to be identified only by the linen coat and officer s pants he had been wearing before he retreated with other Confederates down the hill to Stage Creek on the south side of Lafayette Street. His headstone may be seen in Section D of the churchyard near MacKinnon Hall. While originally interred here, his remains were later moved by relatives to Cowpen Pond Cemetery in eastern Jackson County. Wounded in the Battle&Died Soon After James H. Brett ~ Fifty-two, of Norwood s Company. The town constable and a Mexican War veteran, he was clubbed to the head with a musket butt and had the muscle shot away from his left forearm. He died a day or two after the battle at his home on North Jefferson Street. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery. M. N. Dickson ~ He was in Marianna from his home in Gadsden County because it was court day. He volunteered to fight with Norwood s men and died later in the day. His relatives came to Marianna in a wagon to retrieve his body. Place of burial unknown. Arthur Lewis (Sr.) ~ Fifty-eight, one of Norwood s men, died on September 29, He is buried at Riverside Cemetery.
5 Solomon Sullivan ~ Fifty- four, He was shot in the elbow during the fighting in St. Luke s Churchyard and died at the home of Mrs. Lawrence Armistead in October He may be buried at the Greenwood Methodist Church Cemetery.
