2 INTRODUCTION What is about? is one of the advanced studios in the master degree program. It offers an environment to students to review their practice of design amongst excellent designers in the contemporary architectural scene and prepare them to research architectural ideas by design. From recall to rediscover, refresh to research, rethink to redesign, repeat to recycle, members in will be stimulated to redevelop ones own design methodology: from observation, realization to communication. We believe that good architects can consistently produce high quality designs because they have good design habits or a kind of methodology(but it is often mistaken as personal style). These habits, which have been practiced and improved for years, enable these architects to capture inspirations from time to time. On the other hand, they are well-trained to be able to develop these inspirations into inspiring buildings. aims to offer an environment to students to develop their habits and knowhow in design. INTEREST How do we approach architectural designs?, apart from teaching, has its own specific interests in architectural designs and design strategies. We are interested in discussing a design as a result from a process, forms within principles, images above issues, on plans rather in theory. These interests shall define the field of knowledge for all members of this Studio to study and explore. Specifically, the key focus of this year is about spatial organizations and its representation on plans. Students are requested to research on these interests and have reflections on them in their own design works. M1 M1 is the year students return to the school to resume their study of architecture. During their yearout training and undergraduate study, they might have developed their working habits and views towards architectural designs. It is the perfect time to critically review these all over before MII. OBJECTIVES What do we aim to achieve? 1. To establish a body of knowledge of our interest: Space organizing strategies 2. To research architectural ideas by design projects: Can we observe any relationship between spatial organizing strategies and building programs? If yes, what could that be? Could there be other possibilities? 3. To review and redevelop our design work flow. COURSE FORMAT What form the course will take? will be conducted in cycles of lecture, workshop and discussion. Subject interest and important issues will be introduced to students by lectures, In-class workshops on specific knowhow on graphical analysis technique, design thinking and communication will run during the design project phase, parallel with the individuals design process. In discussions, students have to regularly present work progress and discuss their interest with others. MII students (thesis students advised by Nelson Tam) will also participate in the studio discussion and research work. 2

3 PROCESS How do we operate? We would take questions raised from our field of interest as our research questions and these questions would guide our Subject Investigation. Through our studio design, we would research on the subject interest in form of Design Project. [a] Subject Investigation + [b] Design Project [a] Students will be introduced to the subject interest by Lecture. Through discussion, they will formulate questions in various issues which they will continue to investigate and analyze. In this process, workshop will provide them with analytical tools and techniques. Through cycles of presentation and discussions, students, at the end, have to organize their investigation and prepare slide presentations (min, 15 mins), booklet documentation and models. (192 2 booklet + slide show) [b] Design projects will be understood as a extended investigation on the subject, but this investigation aims at what has not been discovered, not been seen or realized. Among many architectural issues, the core focus here is the relationship between space organizing strategy and building program. Students can match one space organizing strategy to one building program with respect to their earlier investigation and interest(a matrix of space organizing strategy and building program shall be resulted from the Subject Investigation and input from me). In the projects, they should try to work the relationship between the two without compromising any one of them. Students, at the end, have to deliver digital presentations (max. 3 mins), models, four A1 panels and booklet documentation. SCHEDULE How do we manage our time? 1. Subject Investigation 6 weeks 2. 5 Selected Architectural Works - The field of our architectural interest The study of architecture is ultimately the study of works of architecture just as the study of literature is the study of works of literature. [1] Subject Investigation To learn Chinese literature, people study poems from Li Bai, Du Fu ; to learn western classical music, people study music of Bach, Beethoven; to learn contemporary architecture, what do we study? whom do we study from? The most revealing portrait of the interest of Studio RE in this year would be its collection of architectural works. This collection consists of 50 pieces of work from 20 architects from various continents. These architects/ offices include: Makoto Yokomizo architects,acebo X Alonso Arquitectos,,David Chipperfield, Fujimoto Architects,Gigon & Guyer,Herzog & de Meuron,Jose Rafael Moneo,Le Corbusier,Ledoux, Louis I Kahn,,Mansilla-Tuñón,Mies van der Rohe,Morger & Degelo,Christain Kerez, Nieto Sobejano,Paulo David,,Ryue Nishizawa,,Valerio Oligiati As a collection, the works/ architects were selected carefully based on a sustaining observation on the contemporary architecture. Almost like a game of word puzzle, the first challenge delivered to students is to find out the connection among the works. This requires one to have an overview of the collection and develop a sense to appreciate the specific quality in these works. Upon appreciation, we establish our understanding and then create our interpretations. Discussions and discoveries made from these works shall become our shared knowledge which powers our own exploration in studio design projects. To enter this field, I specify a path for us - the plans. Le Corbusier placed emphasis clearly on plans. In Towards a new Architecture, he wrote, "The Plan is the generator", "Without a plan, you have lack of order, and willfulness" and "The Plan holds in itself the essence of sensation" etc. The plans of a building are the indispensable parts of its architecture. Plans can be viewed as ink in form of dots and lines and fills on paper just as many graphics. Yet, in the eyes of architects, plans are spatial, sometimes heavy, sometimes light, sometimes massive, sometimes transparent. It takes not only our reasons but also our senses to appreciate the beauty and intricacy of the plans of these works. Apart from the issue of representation, we will also look into the influence of program over the space in these works. Some of these 50 works are museums which are often considered as a type of loose program. Agree it or not, we are going to examine the dynamics between the various programs and the spatial strategies applied to them. [1] Professor Essy Baniassad, The Black Book

7 Research by Design - Proposing a yet-to-come response to an current question Design Project The design project is considered as an experiment. Your design will be responding to your own question. What is that question? We do not know yet for the moment; however, we know that it will be about the possibility of a new spatial strategy or a new possibility of an old strategy. There will be three parameters in the design project: Space Organizing Strategy x Site x Program Space organizing strategy is either a new one or a variation of the one you study in the Subject Investigation. Therefore, by the time you finish the Subject Investigation, you should have a sense for that. The site will be given at the beginning of the Design Project and the program will be a parameter to select to complete the set up for your design experiment. 4 choices of programs will be provided: A library A student amenity centre A teaching block A student dormitory More information will be released later. Process and atmosphere As M1 students, you have the full responsibility on your design projects that you need to monitor the progress, taking care of the time, while I would advise on work standards and requirements for your reference. We shall discuss our project once a week. The discussion shall follow an organized time table to assure fair consultation time for all. On another Studio day, we shall meet in a workshop format that we will do design exercises within the Studio time, say an afternoon, together. These exercises are designed to provide you an atmosphere or simulations to do your own studio design. I would convey some of my response to your design through the exercises or materials to be discussed in these workshops. Your active participation in the Studio will be critical to success of creating a creative and refreshing environment for every designer in the Studio to work. As a summary, you should have a picture in your heads that there are two halves in this Studio: the first half is the Subject Investigation, the second is Design Project, while the second half will consist of two types of activity: your own Design and the in-class design exercises. 7
