He married ALFRETTA "Allie" MARIAH CANNADY 0 Oct 1884 in Sarcoxie, 10 Jasper Co., MO, daughter of CHARLES CANNADY and ROSE RAGAN. She was born Jun 18 in Mascoutah, St. Clair Co., IL, and died 28 Apr 194 in Ford, Ford Co., KS.. Notes for ISOM MARTIN DAWSON: Isom speaks: It was the year 190, and I would soon be 42 years old. I had just moved my wife and our family of 9 children on farther West to Ford County, Kansas, just north of the Arkansas River, near the little town of Ford. According to one chapter, The Quest for Quivira, from an old history book, it is reported that "Coronado crossed the Arkansas River at Ford, Kansas, a short distance from Dodge City." It describes his journey like this. "While moving through Kansas, Coronado passed the sites of the modern towns of Liberal, State Line, Milner, Hayne, Archer, Arkalon, Kismet, Plains, Collano, Meade, Fowler, Advance, Minneola, Bloom, Kingsdown, and Ford. The party arrived at the river on June 29, 141, which was the feast of San Pedro y San Pablo, and the chronicler Jaramillo said that the river was named in their honor. They forded the Arkansas to the north bank, the same point which had

5 been used by the buffalo and the Indians for centuries. At the bend of the river they swung northeast and moved downstream through a country of rolling prairies...toward the Larned area." Probably it was a bold move as I later learned, but life was good, and we looked forward to living in our new home which I'd built before bringing the family to this new neighborhood. ***************************************************************** Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 190 : The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 4 years. Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents per hour. The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,00 per year, a veterinarian between $1,00 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $,000 per year. More than 9 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home. Ninety percent of all U.S. doctors had no college education. Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. Five leading causes of death in the U.S. were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease. Stroke The American flag had 4 stars... Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet...or plastic, zip-lock bags, nylons, Kleenex! There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write.

6 Only percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S. in a year Adapted from internet message. I. M., as he was known, was born in Black Jack Grove, TX on February 2, 183. This is sometimes also known as Black Jack, TX. The area was a good farming community, but very small. It had a church, a school, and a little store or two, but no post office. This location is now known by and shown on a current road map as Cumby, Hopkins Co., TX. [On a visit to Cumby in 1999, we noted that one of the retail stores still had the name on the window -- Blackjack Grove. JKL] Later the family moved to the Sarcoxie, Jasper Co, MO area, where the Charles W. Cannady and Harriman families also lived. Isom Martin and Alfretta grew up in this rural community and were married there on Oct., Six children were born in MO. The Cannady family (Allie's parents) had moved to the Great Bend, KS area, and because of their advice and hoping for better success in a financial way the I. M. Dawson family started to Kansas by covered wagons drawn by four fine, husky mules on July 28, Alfretta had come earlier by train because a new baby was expected soon. She was disappointed because she wanted to make the trip with the family, and she greatly enjoyed travelling. Lillie became ill with malaria fever on the road, so I. M. had to load the family on a train to reach proper medical help. The family possessions were left with the John Denny family and Mr. Tom Boucher, who also were coming to Kansas to make their home. The I. M. Dawson family moved to a farm in Stafford Co., KS. Farming methods, as well as implements were very different there. There was homesickness, lack of finances, and I. M. was especially discouraged and would have returned to MO if he could have financed the move with his family. The children were taught to work and helped harvest a fair crop of wheat the next year. The older children husked corn for neighbors the first two winters to help carry the financial burden of pioneer days. Cow chips were used for part of the fuel to keep the family warm. Three different farms were "home" during the five years in Stafford and Barton county where three children were born. After five years, I. M. had accumulated horses, mules, cows, machinery and money enough to make a payment on land. So with a land agent he moved further west to Ford County where he bought three quarters of land which later became known as the "Dawson Place." (Located about 3 miles north of Ford, Ford Co., KS on the Spearville Road). A four room square house was built on his land. The same house was later extensively remodeled by Verna and Elmer Karns in the 1940's. After the home was ready, the family again loaded into covered wagons pulled by teams and started west, driving their cattle with them. In a raging snow storm, they arrived on Dec. 2, Neighbors D.O. Rinehart and Frank Cook were keeping a fire expecting the new

7 neighbors to arrive. The following spring, Lillie was married to W. P. Warner of St. John and returned to live in the same house where the parents and brothers and sisters had previously lived. Only one of the children, the 10th, who was Clarice, was born in Ford County in 190. Some of the childhood memories of the farm were the harvest crews of header barges, many horses and several men; the huge dinners for the threshers; the mile and one-half walk to and from the rural school; the sand storms pelting the children on the road; the rural Sunday School where the minister, Rev. Ballinger, looked like Abraham Lincoln. Later, in 1911/12 the family moved from the farm setting to the town of Ford, Kansas. Memories of adjusting to the town school, the Saturday afternoon visits to town, and later, Saturday night in the little town, are vivid. Ford was a small rural town--perhaps never having more than 20 population at any time. The family home was located in the Southwest corner of the town. The three youngest children each graduated from the High School at Ford, and later had some teaching experience. After I. M.'s death in 193, Alfretta moved to a smaller home closer to church and downtown. She lived there until her death in Excerpts from notes of Verna Dawson Karns Memories of my grandfather, I.M. Dawson, are of his tall, straight form, with beautiful white hair as he was seen often walking back and forth from the family home to the downtown area of Ford. He seemed also to enjoy teasing the grandchildren as they played at his home. Most of the children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren lived in that nearby area during all of their years in Ford County. Isom Martin Dawson and "Allie" Cannady Dawson both are buried in the family plot of the Ford KS Cemetery about a mile east of the town of Ford, Ford Co., KS. [JL] * * * By other grandchildren, Isom is remembered for his playful tickling when the young ones "dashed" past him in his living room, and for the peppermints he carried in his pocket to be passed out to the grandchildren. Others remember his cheering and hollering at basketball games along with neighbor Bill Heiland, and his Ford V8 with the hand-throttle installed, as he drove into the surrounding farmlands to survey his land where many of the family lived. Others remember his stately stance and his black suit as he daily walked down the sidewalk from his home, crossed the railroad tracks, and passed by the grade school on his way downtown to pick up the mail, and spend some time exchanging the time of day and news with friends in this small friendly town. On the serious side, during those dust-bowl, depression years he gave $3.00 for the old-

8 fashioned revival meeting. It is still remembered as being generous! With his glasses pushed up on his head, he could be heard above the rest of the congregation singing his favorite song, "He Brought Me Out." More About ISOM MARTIN DAWSON: Burial: Ford KS Cemetery OCC: Farming REL PREF: Protestant -- Scotch Irish Descent Residence: Ford, Ford Co., KS Notes for ALFRETTA "Allie" MARIAH CANNADY: Alfretta, my grandmother, in her later years, would sit in her favorite rocker where she could see out the window and watch the activities of the small town as they came into view. The rocker always seemed to be placed too close for comfort to the china cabinet with curved glass front and sides. It seemed to survive the potential hazards of the many grandchildren who visited her. She is remembered by many of her grandchildren for the "big" sugar cookies which were always waiting in the cookie jar for some hungry child, and also for the butterscotch candies [round and hard like a quarter] which were always there. While my daughter, Gwen Ladd Hackler, is too young to have known her great-grandparents, the I. M. Dawsons, she and her husband, Don Hackler, now enjoy in their home the antique bedroom furniture which furnished the front bedroom of the Dawson's last home in Ford, Ford Co., KS. --Excerpts from Jean Karns Ladd Isom Martin Dawson and "Allie" Cannady Dawson both are buried in the family plot about a mile east of Ford, Ford Co, KS. Allie's funeral was conducted by Rev. August Brandes, the first pastor of the Church of the Nazarene in Ford, Ford Co., KS. ******* Some of the grandchildren's memories of Grandma "Allie" are the big cookie jar always full of sugar cookies. It must have taken dozens and dozens for her many grandchildren who visited her as they dropped in and out--perhaps for a cookie. Always present also was the dish of flat round butterscotch candies just waiting for someone to stop by for a treat! Grandmother was a quiet, meek little lady who had seen a lot of years and many hardships with her ten children who all lived to be adults. That was quite an accomplishment in the days before antibiotics, plastics, nylons, wash and wear fabrics, automatic washers and dryers! In the last 10 or 1 years of her life she spent much "well-earned" time sitting in her favorite rocking chair (which was always too close to "that" curved glass china cabinet) looking out the window watching the activities of the little town where she had lived so long. She had an excellent view of the highway coming through the center of town, and of the school children walking to and from the schools. She was always active in the Missionary Society of the Nazarene Church. She served as their treasurer for many years and the money, though often small, was carried in a well recognized

9 little coin purse. With her hair brushed back to a bun, and dressed in the same style dress almost all of the time, she kept an orderly home. After she was free to be gone, she loved to travel whenever someone was going and had some space, or to board a bus on her way to MO or CO to visit family and friends. These were well-earned vacations! 21 Notes for LILLIE MAY DAWSON: Lillie May Dawson Warner was the first of 10 children born to Isom Martin and Alfretta Dawson. She came with her parents from MO to KS by covered wagon in Their first Kansas home was in Stafford County. She moved to Ford County with her parents in The following year she was married to Willie P. Warner at Ford on March 1. She and her husband lived on farms near St. John, Larned and Rozel before moving to Ford in August, Lillie was a member of the Ford United Methodist Church. A Charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, she served as president of the women's organization for many years. She was also a member of the Ford Historical Society, the Prairie Gleaners Club, and Ideal Homemakers Club, the Golden Age Club, and Butcher Travel Club. Their 0th Wedding Anniversary was celebrated with their family and friends. A family dinner was given, followed by an open house in the afternoon. Their first twenty years together were spent in Stafford and Pawnee Counties, and the following thirty years in Ford, Ford Co., KS. Lillie's love for growing things was expressed and will be remembered by her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. One of the joys of her life was sharing with others from her gardens. She spent many hours on the banks of a stream with her fishing pole and found this a good place to meditate on the problems of life. Lillie had the opportunity of being a members of the first All-Lady City Council of the town of Ford. And that was "before" women's-lib! In 191, she enjoyed the opportunity of having a five-generation picture made with herself being the Great-great grandmother Lillie Warner, and the Great-grandmother Iva Snook, the Grandmother Shirley Riegel, the Mother Leslie Schoonover, and the Child Ami Cherise Schoonover. For several years, a Dawson reunion was held in the Warner home on Memorial Day when many of the relatives came to Ford to participate in the activities and decorate the graves of loved ones at the cemetery in Ford. At her funeral, the eulogy was given by her nephew, Rev. Clyde Dawson, and the music, a vocal trio, consisted of two nieces, Berniece Dawson Lemmons and Dorothy Dawson Close, along with a high school friend of theirs, Roberta Pearsall Shrauner, who also was a friend of Lillie. They were accompanied at the pianist by a granddaughter, Marilee Williams. Other family members were also Casket Bearers. * * * * * * 0th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY OF FORD, FORD CO., KANSAS Transcribed and contributed by Barb Boese <barbwire@midusa.net> 29 July 1998 Extracts copied from a booklet in commemoration of the 0th Anniversary of the City of Ford, Ford County, Kansas

His large scales were always present to weigh the produce as it came to him--and to weigh the children who thought the scales were a novelty, with the heavy weights that had to be moved to get their proper weight. They were so much BIGGER than those at the doctor's office just up the street. At the time of his death, he was survived by two brothers: E. J. Warner of Larned and Howard Warner of Great Bend, KS. 24 ...making biscuits * * * * * Excerpts from A TRIBUTE TO DAD written by Eileen Dawson Rollins at the time of Cliff's death... On November, 188, a small bundle from Heaven was delivered into the care of I. M. and Allie Dawson. On this day Cliff Dawson began what was to be a long, long and sometimes wearisome journey. The gift was nurtured in, and early taught, of recognizing the importance of the things of God. Always there have been children richer in the world's meaningless goods, but there were never ones more loved or whose father was more proud. To his seven children were born 14 grandchildren, who in turn have presented their grandparents with 12 great-grandchildren....the sun is setting now and has nearly slipped beyond the horizon. And now the care so diligently lavished on us, your children, can be returned. Many times now, Dad it seems you are going to slip away, but you seem to say, "Just a little longer, Lord. My family may need me yet another time." And now the journey is ended...the hand of God beckons you to come through the Portals of Glory. "And please, Dad, we will be so anxious for a big reunion, won't you meet us at the Gate?" 25 ...had a Victrola player which was a real attraction for visiting cousins ********* Excerpts written for Nondus Dawson on Mother's Day 193--nine years before her death by Berniece Dawson Lemmons... Dear Mom I have a poem which begins: Love your Mother while she lives Don't wait for her to die -- To show how much you cared for her With mourners standing by. There are probably few families who have a more profound love for each other than ours; yet few who express it verbally less than we. --Perhaps this is not all bad. Those who know our family, either casually or well, are aware of the unusual closeness.... It may be that feeling is more genuine than it were voiced glibly on one hand -- and then, either by action or inference, we caused other members of the family or those outsiders who look on to question the depth of love... I think we "live our love" rather than "talk" it. In hopes that it will bring some pleasant memories, let me reminisce and recall some things from the childhood of each of your seven children. Well, Clyde just burned the barn down. No, it wasn't arson-- he just burned the barn down! Clyde would strut around say- Ing "I'm little C.C. --- I'm little C.C." Now Pearle probably led the "quiet life." I recall you thought perhaps you neglected her because she was so good! I guess the most cruel thing she ever did was squeeze a baby chicken around the neck--until it died! Then there was Vernon! Trying to be Mom's Little Helper and take some things off the clothesline, he stood on the sharp edge of the plow, fell and cut a jagged three cornered gash in his forearm. Dorothy was the "House-Cleaner." Dad never could find his things because Dorothy cleaned the house so well. She also was the part-time hairdresser. Remember when she
