3 Cremation Memorials at St Mary's Church Purley on Thames Introduction This booklet records the cremation memorials at St Mary's Church. They fall into four groups:- Group 1 - memorials scattered around the churchyard Group 2 - memorials recorded in the Book of Remembrance Group 3 - memorials clustered around the memorial garden Group 4 - records of scattering Group 5 - additional inscriptions on burial memorials As far as practicable we try to record all the persons whose ashes have been disposed of in St Mary's Churchyard. There is not always an actual inscription so sometimes we must rely on entries in the Burials Register. The earliest mention of a cremation is for Clive Trevor Collins in 1924 but there is no mention as to whether his ashes were scattered or interred in an existing grave. The names appearing in the index are those that are either recorded in the Burials Register or appear on a memorial inscription. The date of death given is technically the date the ashes were interred although in most cases this is the correct year of death; however in some cases ashes were kept by one spouse until he or she died and then the ashes of both of them were buried together. Numbering In order to find and cross-reference entries we number certain items First we allocate a number for the plot where the cremated remains are interred. These are in the series of plot numbers at St Mary's They have no other significance. Where the interment is in an existing grave the series is used. The series are used to identify individuals whose remains were scattered somewhere in the churchyard. There are other series and these are explained in the text. Rectors have used several methods of identifying plots:- a) to allocate the areas east, west, north and south of the memorial garden and define rows starting at the hedge and working out, then allocate a row and plot starting on the left this will give a reference such as row 4 no 5. (eg N 4/5) b) to allocate numbers starting at 1 for the top left plot and running the numbers consecutively row by row within an area (eg 14W) However the recording of these in the registers is erratic but noted. Second we identify plot locations around the memorial garden by a grid of 10x10 cm measured from the east and south walls of the graveyard. Plots are located by row letter and distance from the relevant wall eg S48 (ie row S 480 cm from the east wall).

4 Third we allocate a reference number to all the people who are either buried or have had their ashes buried at St Mary's. This is based upon the burials register and the reference within the register. For example the Burials Register that was started in November 1985 is Register 5 so individuals are numbered in the series , so for example Mary Elizabeth Hope who is the first person recorded is Other registers in which cremations are registered are (St Mary's) and date (Parish Council). Recording Standards As far as practical all the words on the several memorials have been recorded, however no attempt has been made to reproduce the line arrangement. All names are in block capitals, other words are in lower case. Quotations are in italics. The Memorial Garden The memorial garden was provided by George Spong to provide a quiet place for reflection and where ashes could be scattered or buried. This is located in the southeast corner of the old churchyard and consists of a yew hedge arranged in a square. He also provided a Book of Remembrance but this has hardly been used. What has happened in practice is that remains have been buried around the garden and markers placed to record the place of burial. These range from stone slabs to simple vases. Locations of individual memorials are identified by four groups: East, South, North, West and Centre indicating which side of the garden they are on. Rows are then lettered from the hedge and plots numbered reading from left to right indicating the number of decimetres from the wall (either south wall or east wall). The row letters are:- Centre A East B South C West D to M North N to W Not all the allocated rows have been used Cremation Status The churchyard is full and full burials now can take place only in existing graves. However the cremation area can still take additional burials, although the majority of cremation burials now take place at the Parish Council's Burial Ground next to the Barn.

5 Cremation Memorials Group 1 - Memorials in various parts of the churchyard This group excludes those that are grouped around the Garden of Remembrance and includes only those headstones or markers which indicate a cremation burial.
