1 SPECIAL COLLECTIONS FINDING AID 801 K Street NW Washington, D.C Title: MS 0448 Yerkes, Pappas, and Parker papers, Processor: Elizabeth Ratigan Processed date: September 2015 [Finding Aid last updated January 2016] Yerkes, Pappas and Parker was a Washington, D. C. architecture firm that specialized in historic preservation. David Yerkes was educated at Harvard and Yale. His first firm was Diegert & Yerkes and Associates. He then established his own firm, David Yerkes and Associates, before joining with Nicholas Pappas and John Parker. He was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a member of its Board of Directors, and also served as its Vice- President. Nicholas A. Pappas received his education at Auburn University. Before focusing his career on historic preservation, he worked with developers to layout subdivisions and then designed houses within them. He had particular professional expertise in restoration/rehabilitation of historic buildings and won awards for his work on the Massachusetts Avenue headquarters of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The firm received Historic Preservation Awards from the Washington chapter of American Institute of Architects for a Logan Circle Victorian house. Pappas was architect for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Scope and Content Note: David Yerkes was an active architect from the mid-1940 s until Nicholas Pappas was active in designing development homes in the mid- Century and worked for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Materials include publications and brochures relating to historic preservation in general as well as specifically to Washington, D. C. Testimony regarding the preservation of historic buildings in Washington, D. C. is also included. The firm won awards for its work on the Massachusetts Avenue Headquarters of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Other buildings referenced in the materials are: Albee Building, Winder Building as well as documents from Don t Tear It Down. The materials are primarily from the 1960 s and 1970 s.
