3 An Architectural Symposium Pastor, Father Paul Felix, invites you to join us as we begin our 150th anniversary celebrations. This symposium will give tribute to sacred architecture and the legacy of Nicholas Clayton, particularly in the redesign of our church, his last remaining work in Houston. This will be a commemorative and historic event. Join us as we celebrate 150 years since the dedication of our church. As the last remaining work of Nicholas Clayton in our great city, it is one of the most important historical buildings in Houston. We honor the legacy of his many accomplishments here and throughout the State of Texas, most particularly in the edifice which stands as the oldest church in continuous use in Houston. We will journey with experts to develop a deeper understanding of sacred architecture from yesterday to the present and into the future. With the inspiration of renowned contemporary architects, we hope to create a keener appreciation for the sacrosanct and its influence in the culture. Rev. Stephen B. Reynolds will explain the importance of church architecture especially as it relates to Catholic Theology and Liturgy. He will be followed by Duncan G. Stroik, a practicing architect, author and Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. Stroik will examine sacred architecture as it relates to the world today. Dwayne Jones, Executive Director of Galveston Historical Foundation, will review the life and works of Nicholas Clayton. Stephen Fox, an architectural historian at the Rice School of Architecture, will discuss the accomplishments of Nicholas Clayton and the importance of The Church of the Annunciation. 2 P a g e
4 Nicholas Clayton and The Church of the Annunciation The Church of the Annunciation grew out of St. Vincent de Paul on the corner of Franklin Ave and Caroline. The diocese was growing and needed an additional church. Land was purchased in 1867 and bricks were used from the Harris County Courthouse. They were brought to this location by devout German Catholics who carried the bricks in wheel barrows and painstakingly laid out the foundation. By 1884 the church needed some work and the second pastor, Fr. Thomas Hennessey hired famed architect, Nicholas J. Clayton to remodel it. The original entrance had two towers, however, Clayton removed them and added a central tower of 175-feet thinking it would be the tallest structure until the year The tower lost that honor by 1912 even after being replaced following the storm of 1900 with a 191-foot tower. Clayton restructured the roof to cover both the nave and side aisles. This gave the roof an aerial cruciform shape. The side aisles ceilings were raised, eliminating the clerestory windows. English buttresses on the north and south walls were added to relieve the load on the slender interior columns. In 1910, Fr. Hennessey had a stucco skin put over the bricks which had a distinguished history themselves. Unfortunately, the brick work was hidden but the stucco helped preserve the brick and the structure. Restorations have continued throughout the 150 years. The goal has always been to preserve Catholic architectural theology and maintain the integrity of Nicholas Clayton s vision, who designed a worthy place for worship and devotion to God. It is a true third place to encounter community and the Grace of the Presence of God. The Church of the Annunciation continues Clayton s legacy through the preservation of Houston s jewel. 3 P a g e
5 Biographies Stephen Fox is an architectural historian at the Rice School of Architecture. He lectures also at both Rice and the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture of the University of Houston and is a Fellow of the Anchorage Foundation of Texas. Fox s work focuses on Houston and Texas architecture. He examines the ways architecture engages such social constructs as class identity, cultural distinction, and regional differentiation. Duncan G. Stroik is a practicing architect, author and Professor of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame. His award-winning work includes Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel in California, The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Wisconsin, and Saint Joseph Cathedral in S. Dakota. Rev. Stephen B. Reynolds is the Pastor of Elizabeth Ann Seton of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. He initiated the architectural project on the St. Theresa Chapel in Sugar Land, Texas with Duncan Stroik in 2005 and has a strong sense of preserving the Church s rich patrimony through architecture. Dwayne Jones is the Executive Director of Galveston Historical Foundation, one of the largest not-for-profit historic organizations working at the local level in the country. This organization owns or manages several Nicholas Clayton buildings including St Joseph Church Museum, Ashton Villa and the 1892 Bishop s Palace (Gresham House). Jim Parsons is the Executive Director for Preservation Houston, the city s only nonprofit historic preservation advocacy and education organization. Jim coordinates programs and educational outreach such as architectural walking tours, video tours and lectures. He has co-authored and photographed several books on Art Deco architecture in Texas, including Houston Deco: Modernistic Architecture of the Texas Coast. Denise McKeon is the Wedding Coordinator and creator of the Docent Program for The Church of the Annunciation. She is a long-time family genealogist, recently taking on Sacramental Records and the research of Annunciation s history. 4 P a g e

Early in Houston s history, it was home to Quality Hill, the city s most fashionable residential neighborhood. The area turned commercial beginning with the 20th century thanks to an expanding business district and the construction of Union Station in Large-scale redevelopment projects including Houston Center and the George R. Brown Convention Center drastically altered the area in the late 1900s, and today, east downtown is an intriguing mix of small commercial buildings, early skyscrapers and gleaming modern office towers and hotels. This 90-minute, docent-guided Preservation Houston walking tour traces the history of the area through architecture old and new, ranging from historic structures such as The Church of the Annunciation and the 1915 Texas Company Building to new developments like Discovery Green, which has been a catalyst for nearly $2 billion in new construction. 6 P a g e
