Photo Didier VERBAERE Jacques ALLARD CEO ARCHI-EUROPE GROUP PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION (EURAF) A positive networking! Brilliant concept, Archi-World Academy Awards, now in its fourth edition, creates a link between talented last year architecture students and the great architecture practices, in a sharing spirit. We see now, with the experience, that numerous laureates continue after their training period to work with the architects who have chosen them. This student selection indeed gives, year after year, an impulse to the architecture schools great talents. As example: the architect Diana Vatinyan, chosen by Daniel Libeskind. After working a few years with this great architect s office, she could create her own office in New York. It is interesting to notice the dazzling evolution of this young lady from Moscow, thanks to this competition which has completely disrupted her life. Other example: the Italian architect Andrea Tabocchini, chosen by JKMM Architects in Finland, is now cooperating with OMA (Rotterdam), the studio created by Rem Koolhaas. Archi-World Academy Awards may be considered as a springboard for a student to integrate a great architecture office or to start a career where the sky is the limit. In the same way, as good architects who don t have many communication opportunities to increase their contacts can t progress, talented students are not able to display their architectural knowledge. That is the Archi-World Academy Awards challenge: create links, making everyone happy. On our side, we are very lucky to organize this competition with the full support of Messe München and welcome the most talented architects at BAU, the greatest building materials fair in the world. We foster permanently new collaborations, in a friendly spirit. Strong links are established between students and architects, but also between all the iconic architects when we bring them together. Our intention is to create local Archi-World Academy Awards in the future. Especially in Asia, where we have noticed a great potential for an intelligent and ecological contemporary architecture. Up to now, we haven t seen any other organization equivalent to ours where young people can launch their career on a worldwide scale. Archi-World Academy Awards is not only a tool creating professional links and attracting talents, but also a friendship network. The architects who have participated since the beginning have initiated lifelong connections. Other associations follow as the desire to join this experience is very strong. Jacques Allard 5

Gifted with a pioneering spirit, Viggo Haremst contributes to the reputation of Henning Larsen, one of the greatest Danish practices. Photo courtesy of Henning Larsen Viggo Haremst Henning Larsen, Denmark/Germany After studying at the Lund University (Sweden) and at The Danish Design School in Copenhagen, Viggo Haremst graduated in architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School (2000). The architect started his professional career at two famous offices, i.e., Zaha Hadid Architects (2002) and White Architects (2003). After that he worked at Nord Architects in Copenhagen (2007), before joining the Henning Larsen team (2012) where he worked as one of the company s lead designers for several years. In 2014, he joined Henning Larsen s Munich office as a Partner and Design Director with the task to expand the office internationally together with the Managing Director and Partner Werner Frosch. He initiates and develops projects with a strong conceptual identity as well as coordinating the design direction of ongoing projects. His focus is on large public buildings, headquarters, universities and mixed-use projects in various cultural contexts. Viggo s creative management and attention to detail has been the driving force on several large competition teams. His experience ranges from creative management in the early phases to the actual building phase. He has successfully combined building design and masterplans with a special attention to green and environmental aspects. With a strong focus on the user aspect and organization of the space, he has a special ability to maintain a strong concept throughout the many project stages. Viggo Haremst has a vast international experience leading prize-winning competitions and projects of various scales in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, among others the Batumi Aquarium in Georgia, the Gem Building in Riyadh, the Southern Denmark University s Kolding Campus building, the Roskilde Campus and the Mediacorp Headquarters in Singapore. He has taught at the Technical University of Denmark and as partner of Henning Larsen he acts as a keynote speaker in various parts of the world holding lectures about current research and projects. The architectural practice Henning Larsen was founded in 1959, in Copenhagen, by the famous Danish architect Henning Larsen ( ) after he worked first with Arne Jacobsen and then with Jorn Utzon. The first great project outside of Scandinavia is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), which establishes their long lasting international reputation. Noticing an increasing demand for Scandinavian architecture, the office reinforces and expands its international presence by opening branches worldwide, in Riyadh, Munich, Oslo, Faeroe Islands, Hong Kong and New York. More than 300 people architects, engineers, designers and employees - perfectly combine proximity with clients, local c ontext, traditional Scandinavian concept, sustainability, social responsibility and cutting-edge technology know-how to resolve the present challenges. 2 University of Southern Denmark, Kolding Campus, Kolding ( ) With its triangular shape and its creative façade, Kolding Campus creates a significant new landmark in Kolding and thereby forms a close interaction with the other educational institutions of the town. The solar shading system consists of approximatively 1600 triangular shutters of perforated steel, mounted on the façade in a way, which allows them to adjust to the changing daylight and desired inflow of light. Inside the five-floor atrium, the displaced position of the staircases and access balconies creates special dynamics where the triangular shape repeats its pattern in a continuous variety of positions up through the different floors. 8

1 Visualization Henning Larsen 1 Gem Building, Riyadh ( ) The Gem is composed of three separate buildings for a mixed-use programme. The cluster of gems creates spaces for a fluid and flexible circulation around and through the buildings. Wrapping the faceted exterior, a high-quality metal mesh fabric provides solar protection and weather-resistance to local sandstorms. In addition, the geometry and the situation of the building create shade between the volumes. Combined with site-wide strategies for water-efficiency and reclamation, the energy efficient technologies support several sustainable initiatives. The building is designed to achieve LEED Certification upon completion. 2 Photo Hufton+Crow 9

At the same time, architect, writer, drawer, painter, sculptor and graphic designer, Ángel Luis Tendero has become one of the most important architects on the international scene, supported by his exceptional presence on Facebook. Photo courtesy of ALT Arquitectura Ángel Luis Tendero Martín ALT Arquitectura, Spain Just after graduating from ETSAM (Escuela técnica superior de arquitectura de Madrid), Ángel Luis Tendero (Madrid 1974) worked with Riofisa, a promoter of shopping centers, instead of starting with small projects, like most of the other young architects. During this activity, he was an important part of the design group who made the Principe Pio center, in the historical heart of Madrid, as well as the El Muelle center in the Canary Islands, among other important big malls in Spain. Tired of these projects, without any personal creativity, he started working with Javier de Anton Freile and opened the C2 arquitectura office. From 2004 to 2008, they both undertook numerous projects, such as the Cadena Visual offices, a sports center and an Auditorium in Zamora, some lofts and many renovations. In 2008, he created ALT arquitectura, with his name s initials. Rapidly, many projects followed. The casa Martin, his first important work, created with absolute conceptual liberty, is seen as an enigmatic monolith laid on the land. It s a black box, which absorbs the light with a geometry strictly required by the internal function. For Tendero, architecture must before all procure emotion. He regrets the intellectualized architecture, which no one understands a part from its designer. What people generally want is color, light, scents, shades, wind, breeze. The intuition, knowledge and environmental analysis are converted into a powerful idea. Promoting a space constructivist approach, he always tries to connect architecture with natural materials, like wood, steel or glass, avoiding composite materials, plastics and all materials imitating others. His work concentrates on creation and project development in which the concept is materialized without losing his soul. The interaction with the physical environment creates architecture. With Bernardo Cumins Nogueira, his right-arm, he seeks to maximize the available resources, whilst costs reduction and execution speed are at the center of the projects. His concerns on preservation, renewal, city s expansion and his refusal of work without architectural value, badly conceived or badly executed, are essential values. We are an architectural office trying, by its work, to spread a message of hope, recuperating the lost values such as the social responsibility of the architect, the key role as economic agent for resource efficient management and the reconciliation of architecture with everyone. That is ALT Arquitectura s approach. Having the necessary staff to develop all size projects, the office developed the concept design for the Canalejas shopping center in the heart of Madrid, after winning an international competition, as well as on other important projects outside of Spain. The objective is to realize each one with a global approach guaranteeing their quality. The important question is to know how to diffuse these values. Probably with the Comic album. Alt Comic Book, una aproximación a la arquitectura, which presents a personal vision of space and a way to observe our environment, in an easy accessible language. Same approach on his Facebook account where he has more than 1,2 million followers, becoming the world s most followed architecture office. A real media attraction! Thanks to this success on Internet, principally in Mexico and South America, he organizes workshops in the universities with many famous architects. Supported in this amazing success, Ángel Luis Tendero underlines the present mismatch between society and architecture, when trying to transmit ideas in a simple way. 10

1 Photo Ángel Luis Tendero 1 Casa Roncero, Madrid (2006) Composed of overlapping spatial concepts and covered with a great glass light well, this expressive house runs on a narrow horizontal plan to enable a maximum of landscaped ground. A great concrete volume rises weightless. Nature stays very present and reflects in the aluminium profiled glazed windows, underlining the cantilever structure. 2 Optimil Offices, Castellon de la Plana with CSO Arquitectura (2010) The project arises from the manipulation of a continuous surface which by means of two operations, cutting and folding, resolve the entire programme. Without jumps or breaks in its continuity, it wraps playfully around the local topography. The internal spaces are diaphanous and interconnected. It is an object susceptible to being expanded or reduced without marring the whole. 2 Photo Jordan Sanz 11

Pioneer in high environmental value architecture, open, sincere and responsible, Sebastian Moreno-Vacca has become an expert in sustainable investigation and development, unique and pragmatic, through his numerous award winning and avant-garde projects. Photo courtesy of A2M Sebastian Moreno-Vacca A2M, Belgium/USA After having founded A2M in 2000, the architect Sebastian Moreno-Vacca (graduated from Saint-Luc Brussels) rapidly began to concentrate and specialize in the construction of sustainable buildings and in feasibility studies for large scale developments in his Brussels and New York offices. Since 2006, he indeed teaches at the ULB Architecture Faculty (Belgium). He was also one of the founders and publishers of the quarterly magazine be.passive for 5 years. During his presidency of the Belgian Passive Association (the PMP), he largely contributed to establishing in the Brussels Region, since 2015, a compulsory passive standard. feed the architectural concept as well as give it a new direction through questions like: Can a development limit its climatic impact to the point of regenerating the environment? May parametric design inspire a building? May natural light help creating a project? Could a sustainable project also have a very high architectural value? Is it possible to build passive without extra costs? Which will be tomorrows ways for living, working or leisure? His influence in very low-energy buildings is not limited to Brussels but he exports his expertise across the world. His office builds in Belgium, in New-York, in Kinshasa, in Lisbon, in Luxemburg, in Rabat, in Nairobi, in Canada, in the Netherlands and he regularly holds conferences and organizes seminars throughout the world. Since 2009, all this office s projects are at least passive, some even at zero energy, off the grid or CO2 neutral. And recently, A2M has developed the concept of Permacity : the application at urban scale of a systemic and global conception. Meaning how to conceive a town like a metabolism, a sustainable ecosystem where each element contributes to a self regenerating permanent cycle, alternatively producer and resource. By doing this, the office develops the first areas not only with neutral climate, but also resilient in Europe. His unprecedented and integrated approach internalises the most advanced simulation tools. Helped by three partners - Julie Willem, Aline Branders and Gregory Mathy - his office explores the new narrative modes to 2 Permacities ( ) These projects illustrate the systemic and global concept specific to this office which aims to elaborate a system, a city metabolism inspired by natural ecology (biomimetic) and tradition from the climate and the local culture where each component contributes to one another: the ONE proposing to redevelop a piece of multiuse town in Brussels (BE), the Twisted, mixed use in the Central Park in New-York (USA), and one of the sites Réinventer la Métropole in Paris (FR). These mixed, hybrid, flexible and adaptable programmes whilst integrating today the coming environmental targets are building complexes to be realized in conformity with the passive house standard (heating energy reduction of 90%, and electricity reduction of 60% compared with a normal project) and with a completely neutral CO2 balance. The term permacity ( comes from the permaculture or the permanent agriculture. With permacity you have permanent city as a sustainable city ecosystem. They are the first neutral climate districts where the impact is so reduced that you can regenerate the environment. These Research & Demonstration activities are developed internally and with their think tank FAAST. ( 12

1 Photo Angélique Knop 1 Belgian/Netherland Embassy in Kinshasa, RDC (2017) It is the first passive and BREEAM Embassy in Africa. The project presents a building capable of showing, of giving a meaning, dignity and beauty to a highly symbolic programme represented by an Embassy. A2M chose as basis of their composition the simple form of typical local volumes. By markedly pulling on an angle of the parallelepiped, one energizes and orientates the project. The new interpretation, with parametric design, of the solar protection enriches the architectural approach whilst ensuring a limited environmental impact. Indeed, the cooling needs are reduced by more than 70%. An event, identifiable by everyone, is therefore created on the site. A new landmark. One must underline that the project was accompanied by many cooperation exchanges, shares and knowledge transfers by conferences, master classes, trainings, etc. by involving among others the ULB University in Brussels. 2 A2M 13

2 Visualization C.F. Møller Architects 1 Nordlyset, Copenhagen (2006) Nordlyset (Northern Lights) is a sculptural residential block with an expressive facade, located in the new urban quarter around Amerika Plads in Copenhagen. The development takes the form of a white-plastered block surrounding an interior outdoor courtyard. The facade line is broken to the north and south, giving the building an organic expression, while the bright and friendly-looking apartments enjoy a view of the Sound. The details emphasise the overall expression, with coloured glass panels in a bright striped pattern, designed in co-operation with the visual artist Ruth Campau. The glass panels divide off the balconies, and are also utilised in the block s entry areas. 2 New Islands Brygge School, Copenhagen (2016-competition in collaboration with Tredje Natur) Between Islands Brygge, the Port of Copenhagen and Amager Commons, New Islands Brygge School is built, as a school for lower-secondary school pupils, with special focus on food and movement. The school s special focus enables pupils to relate theoretical teaching with physical, sensory and experience-based learning. This type of learning has given shape to New Islands Brygge School. The building takes its triangular shape from the adjacent city, port and commons, which each serve as inspiration for the choice of materials and colours. Since food is a key element of the school s identity, the dining hall is the central room. The double-high-ceilinged dining hall is not just the canteen, but also the hub which interconnects all the school s functions. This makes the dining hall the gathering point where pupils can meet across the school s many activities. Movement being another focus area for the school, it is important that the school s architecture stimulates physical activity and play. This is achieved through the building s dynamic spiralling design which, with a staircase motif, issues an invitation up to the school s active rooftop area. The roof landscape gives access to several of the school s functions, so that pupils can take a fun and active short cut across the roof. The top part of the roof is the sports area, with ample opportunity for physical activity on the running track, in the parkour area, or in the enclosed ball pitch. The school s interior and outdoor spaces are designed to be in close contact with each other. Each class therefore has direct access to the rooftop landscape, while the school s natural science area is connected to a rooftop zone with a biology garden, hothouse for physics and chemistry, and gardens that are used in cookery lessons. 15

Always choosing a functional and emotional architecture, regardless of the type or scale, BENG proposes dynamic and geometric buildings, with well structured façades offering a general impression of opening and organisation. Photo Courtesy of BENG Architectes Associés Nico Engel BENG Architectes Associés, Luxembourg Together with Marco Bidaine, Yves Noury and Albert Goedert, Nico Engel (1965) - graduated from the l Institut Supérieur d Architecte de l État La Cambre in Brussels in has joined their forces to create the Beng Architects office in 1991 in Esch-sur-Alzette. During its first 25 years, BENG has grown and employs now more than 60 persons. During this period, many changes have taken place regarding materials, techniques, procedures, directives which have durably influenced the architect s activities and conception methods. If innovations aim to improve the home s comfort and quality of life, with controlled ventilation systems with triple glazing, with malleable composite materials to modelling software and smart home technology, it is however essential that a house remains a cultural tool and its arrangement must take account of the human relations and the customer s individuality. It is unthinkable that BENG would one day stop building private homes. Even the smallest construction or renovation programme contains, in its germs, all the fundamental questions the modern architect must put to himself. In a country with a limited construction superficy, it is more pertinent than ever to find innovative solutions to take up the challenges. Established right from the origin by the four founders, the four ethical key principles remain the trust, the responsibility, the respect and the simplicity. BENG s architectural language is clearly inspired by the construction concepts of modern architecture builders. It is the reason why emphasis is put, as to the formal aspect, on the horizontality, the strict linearity, a complex outline with protruding and inserted elements and a building with an harmonious style. Another important field in which BENG s network thinking and social sensivity play a significant role are the renovation and transformation activities. The traditions and the results of the regional cultural policy always find an answer in the architectural approach. Due to the incredible growth of complexity for the architectural offices, sister companies have emerged around the BENG studio: Espace et Paysages (specializing in urban projects), StudioE (topics related to energy), Noury & Associés, based in Thionville (dedicated to projects in France) and the R2D2 Architecture, founded with two colleagues from the University of Brussels, for projects in Belgium. Each of them is specialized in a specific discipline to meet at its best the customers demands and to handle all types of projects and scales, from the extension for a single-family home to the building of a national stadium. 1 Power Station E.C.C.O., Gasperich, Luxembourg (2016) It concerns the construction of two technical buildings (electricity high-tension unit and heating installation) for a new 90 MV power station supplying energy to the «Cloche d Or» industrial and commercial zone in Gasperich. The supporting structure is made of reinforced concrete (slabs, walls, roofs and chimneys), dressed with a metallic cladding chosen mainly for its aesthetics and reduced maintenance. Designed in close cooperation with Aleksander Konstantinov, the form and the outside aspect of the building comply with the complex technical constraints imposed for this special equipment. In order to create a relation between the regulatory 40m high chimney and the technical building s massive volume, the Russian artist has chosen to create a façade coating with a range of clear colors and another one of dark colors. 16

1 Photo Christof Weber 2 Socio-cultural Centre Cité and Cercle Municipal, Luxembourg (2011) Housing many functions (book and media library, cybercafé, etc), Cité stands out by the different types of ambiances, either quiet for the underground levels, either open to the city life. Ensure accessibility to the socio-cultural space, to assert its presence in the centre of Luxembourg City was a major stake. A parallelepiped surrounds the amphitheatre which is recognizable with its continuous and hybrid form. The façade transparency from the first to the third floor underlines the presence of the amphitheatre from the street. Placed in a red box, hanging and sticking out from the roof, the amphitheatre is a strong image in direct relation with the street. The architectural language proposed is perfectly associated, by contrast, with the monumental character of the Municipal Circle which is then revitalized. The project s first part was to make the building operational again in conformity with the new hygiene and security norms and then, link it to «Cité», the second phase enabling to rethink the lay-out of all the rooms, reorganize the offices and renovate the raised ground floor rooms around the great reception hall. 2 Photo Christof Weber 17

Experienced since many years with complex building tasks and thinking in unorthodox approaches, the practice is also preserving realities that characterise the context. Influences and inspiration from art, culture, lifestyle and fashion support this stance. Photo Ortwin Klipp Gerhard Landau Landau + Kindelbacher Architects - Interior Designer, Germany Graduated from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich in 1990 with a degree in Architecture (BDA / BDIA), the German architect Gerhard Landau ( 1965) is a managing partner of the Munich based architectural office Landau + Kindelbacher he founded with Ludwig Kindelbacher in 1994 after a two-year stint at Michael Hopkins + Partners in London. The office employs a team of around 50 people highly committed and multi-skilled, working nationally and internationally on a wide range of projects - office, home, hotels and gastronomy, retail/shops, cultural and special areas as new construction, redevelopment or renovation of protected and listed historical monuments. His goal is the interface between architecture and interior design. Cooperation with selected craftsmen, manufacturers and specialists in different professions guarantees the necessary degree of perfection in detail and materials. A multidisciplinary team has been implementing ambitious building and interior design projects. It works in an informal, professional atmosphere. Top-class projects can result only from reliable partnership relations. In ideal circumstances, these then lead to further planning tasks that are characterised by their longstanding expertise and the confidence of the customers. For Gerhard Landau, architecture is not just any old experienced business but an ever new, individual expression of perfection. Every project lives from personal style to which is given quality of form so that it results in a sensual overall experience. For what makes architecture unique is the sum of many small, carefully planned details. Landau + Kindelbacher creates living environments that equally satisfy the customer s personality and promoting their own high standards of quality. 18 Premium quality is shown on the one hand by pioneering architecture, and on the other by the appreciation of beauty and tradition. In the course of time, the office has developed a sense of quality that is based on sustainable, durable materials and efficient technologies. At the same time, it designs classical and modern buildings and spatial concepts. In this sense, the projects can look back over a wonderful history while being completely up-to-date. The respective values simply add up. The team s strength lies in viewing architecture and interior design holistically and in planning across all disciplines. Both subject areas must be complementary in design, technique and quality, even if the planning task applies to one side only. This office s competence lies in the dialogue between the two disciplines that leads to a charismatic overall result. 1 Unesco World Natural Heritage Site, Messel (2010) The task of designing a visitor information centre for the Messel fossil pit demanded intense consideration for the turbulent history of the place, of both the scientific origin and the changing history of the site itself. The stratification of the oil shale as genius loci forms the basic graphical idea of the building design. Like an earthen clod, the building breaks loose of the existing angular retaining walls and, with its significant monolithic wall panels, is orientated towards the pit the actual highlight of the place. This movement culminates in the overhanging observation platform, from which one has an overview of the research site. The visitor symbolically wanders through the Earth s strata and enters a unique spatial structure that offers no analogy to conventional building types.

1 Photo Jan Bitter 2 New Office Design for a real estate company Designed by the famous Zurich architect Werner Stücheli and completed in 1955, the Hochhaus zur Bastei - considered as the first high-rise building in the city of Zurich - was placed under a preservation order a few years ago. A new office concept has been created for the Swiss branch of a real estate development company, in consideration of the preservation of historical monuments. Elegance and generous proportions, together with an unusual and high-quality material mix and accentua ted lighting, distinguish the office areas and conference zones in a total of about 1000 sq. m. on four floors. The furniture and fittings were designed and individually installed on site by Landau + Kindelbacher. Regarding the architectural quality of the Bastei tower and the representative demands of the customer, a special material combination of black marble, brass, carbon and glass was chosen for the floors, walls and ceilings. As a reminiscence of the architecture of the 1950s, the classical materials are newly interpreted in their use, colourfulness and gloss value. The resulting spatial effect frames the view and allows the low room heights of the existing building to retreat into the background. In contrast to the black space continuum are the high-gloss furniture (highly polished brass) and the bright lighting channels. A speciality is the floor pattern with the brass seams as a visible, high-quality separation. The subject of seams is mirrored again and again in the whole design from the integration of direct and indirect lighting in the cooling ceiling to the special furniture. 2 Photo Ortwin Klipp 19

Architect and partner to AW2, a practice known for its capacity to adapt to all types of programs or contexts, in France and in foreign countries, Stéphanie Ledoux designs her projects with an open approach, without preconceived ideas and focused on the bioclimatic concept. The French architect Stéphanie Ledoux has studied at the Ecole Spéciale d Architecture de Paris, then at the Milwaukee University (Wisconsin, USA). She continues her training period with Jean-François Lagneau, Chief Architect at the Monuments Historiques. In 1999, after receiving the «Meilleur Diplôme de l Ecole Spéciale» Prize, Stéphanie Ledoux starts working with the office AW2, where she becomes a partner and one of the managers in Her partnership with Reda Amalou is the beginning of a period during which AW² will strengthen their multidisciplinary team in order to be able to handle sizeable projects. Stéphanie Ledoux, together with her associate, continues each year to develop new projects throughout the world. This strong presence in foreign countries enabled them to open in 2005 a partnership with a local based company in Vietnam. The projects, the Lycée Français in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) and in Amman (Jordan), the International Esmod School in Paris, the renovation of the Maison Krug in Reims (France) have a common characteristic: they are based on specific issues, i.e. understand the site with its richest components, being able to read the elements of the cultural, climatic, programmatic and economic context, use the most immediate resources and draw projects taking account of the problems and the context. This approach enables to tackle all the matters with an open point of view, favouring invention, whilst treating the subject accurately and pertinently. This bioclimatic approach allows Stéphanie Ledoux to question and to position herself beforehand as to the relevance of the establishment on the site, the intelligence of the envelope, the coherence with the immediate environment resources, the optimization of the energy choices. The office favours wood, in all its approaches, with the object of innovating the form whilst treating with pertinence the stakes of each project. For an architect a project starts always by a questioning. It is important to define the project s context and determine its ambitions. Its architectural approach corresponds more to an open and without a priori process than to a theoretical and stylistic strict frame. 1 Innovative Houses, Chanteloup en Brie, Marne la Vallée (2016) The pilot real estate program of Lodges 35 passive and scalable housing is an answer to the stakes of tomorrows city: scalability, thermal performance, emphasis on innovative economic subjects. Conscious that the traditional construction modes accelerate the raw materials exhaustion, as well as the energy resources needed for their manufacturing, the architects have decided to extensively use materials based on renewable raw materials of agricultural origin. They chose wood as components for the structures and for the exterior carpentry and hemp wool for insulation purposes. The approach integrates the will to face the challenges of sustainable development, by applied research and innovation, to favour reflections on cityplanning and construction, and to work on the improvement of a project from the beginning to its realization and even further on. 20

1 Photo Camille Gharbi 2 Lycée Français in Amman, Jordan (2013) The architectural concept of this 6500sqm school complex for 450 students is directly coming from the site s inherent qualities. Jordan (more especially Amman) has appeared as a place where the light, strong, lively and omnipresent, expresses itself especially well when interacting with the material to create shadows which reveal the volumes. The town of Amman being built on a hilly site the buildings will follow the grounds forms and will be organized in a tight pattern to generate open spaces where take place gardens and shady zones. The stone s omnipresence, conversing permanently with the vegetation, makes it a harmonious place strongly impregnated with traditional culture. Our site study corresponds well to this approach of the city: steep slope, East-West orientation, visual environment with a remarkable landscape quality. The combination of this site s aspects enables to design a project respecting three themes: Anchorage, Material & Light. 2 Photo Daniel Moulinet 21

Like site-specific art, the architect considers architecture as a work created to exist in a certain place. It addresses historical as well as social aspects of the location. Searching to relate to existing structures and systems, his site-specific architecture distances itself from any formal repetition. Photo courtesy of de Architekten Cie Branimir Medić de Architekten Cie, The Netherlands Croatian born architect Branimir Medić settled in the Netherlands after finishing his architectural studies in Zagreb. In 1995, while doing his postdoc at the Amsterdam Berlage Institute, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome. Since 1998 he has been a partner in the renowned Dutch practice de Architekten Cie. The realized works of Medić cover all scales of buildings and urban planning. In the Netherlands as well as abroad he works on commissions such as cultural centres, sports accommodations, office buildings, housing and urban master plans. Educated in the modernist era, he strongly believes in the ability of the avant-garde to identify itself wholeheartedly with the process of modernization, opposed to seeing modernism purely as style and uniformity. His strong dedication to the modern is the foundation for progress. However, arguments to transform the existing archetype are legitimate only if the result reinforces the identity of the location. This method establishes timeless structures for continuous use and programmatic transformation throughout the lifecycle of a building. A sustainable architecture that enters a dialogue with the location. An architecture that is about integration sometimes provocation and is always prompting discussion. Branimir Medić regularly lectures and teaches at universities and other professional platforms in Europe and abroad, most recently at IIT in Chicago and Parsons in New York. Many of his projects have won significant prizes, for instance, in 2016 the Noorderparkbad won the Piscine Europe Award as well as the Amsterdam Architecture Awards. 1 Noorderparkbad, Amsterdam (2006) The municipal swimming pool Noorderparkbad is a freely shaped building with a light appearance, that serves an important connecting function in the neighborhood. Easing the transition between landscape and building and breaking down the typically large scale of a pool accommodation, the project is emphasized as a pavilion in the park. The softly shaped volumes and curved steel curtains are the mediators between building and park. The wavy steel curtain is his most striking element. Primarily an educational element, it communicates how closely the swimming pool is connected to water. On a rainy day, the water flows like a waterfall trickling down the curtain and lets the visitor see how rainwater is collected and recycled as bathing water. The layout ensures low energy costs. Acting like a warm blanket, the secondary functions are wrapped around the high-ceilinged halls of the basins, which are heated to high temperatures. Only the south facing elevations of these halls have no climate buffer, allowing the sun to heat the space and visitors to enjoy the beautiful view over the park. In addition, the setback of the upper volume enables the penetration of daylight deep into the building. The traditional theme of a bathhouse as a meeting place for the neighborhood is reflected in the atmosphere of the interior. Intimate enclosed spaces alternate with high ceilings and skylights. The wooden rhomboid roof construction and finishes of floor, ceiling and wall in traditional materials lends the building a warm atmosphere. 22

1 Photo courtesy of de Architekten Cie 2 First, Rotterdam (2016) On a prominent location in Rotterdam, opposite the central station, the office tower First adds a new accent to the city s skyline. The complex comprises a rectangular base block, 35m high, and a tower of 130m. The lower two levels are accentuated as a transparent plinth, continuing the east side as a glazed conservatory connected to the existing buildings. This serves both as a windbreak and as a transparent entrance to the court at the back of the building which is laid out as a city garden. In the base block a large covered atrium is cut out of the volume, ensuring sufficient daylight in the deep office floors. With its stepped landscaped terraces the atrium lends openness and identity to this part of the complex which has less spectacular views. The design of the office floors is characterized by an open and flexible layout. This is made possible by limiting the load-bearing construction to the central cores and the exterior walls. Referring to the post-war architecture of Rotterdam, the façade grid is composed of prefab elements of natural stone and concrete composite. The facade of the tower is characterized by high vertical windows lying deep between the slender stone ribs. By cutting these ribs at a slight angle a subtle distinction between different sides of the tower is created, changing dependent on the direction from which one sees the façade. The building is certified BREEAM Excellent. 2 Photo courtesy of de Architekten Cie 23

Whether in terms of form or content, SVR-ARCHITECTS aims for a modern balance between creative aesthetics, technical performance, cultural personality and economic performance. Photo SVR-ARCHITECTS Philippe Van Goethem SVR-ARCHITECTS, Belgium Qualified in 1984 as an architect (honors degree) from the St. Lukas Institute in Brussels, Philippe Van Goethem ( 1960) was a CAD/CAM independent architect at the ITH engineering office in Brussels and an independent architect and project manager at SVR-ARCHITECTS before becoming Managing Director & Partner in This Antwerp based multidisciplinary office, founded in 1972 by P. Storme and J. Van Ranst, is managed by Philippe Van Goethem and Jean-Pierre Van Liefferinge. Working in this office is a strong team of motivated and talented architects, interior designers, engineers, urban planners and graphic designers. This multidisciplinary background allows the office to carry out design work for a broad range of national and international companies. SVR-ARCHITECTS is specialized and expert in: Architecture (New buildings, Renovation, Restoration, Conversion), Feasibility studies, Space planning, Visualization, Sustainable Building and Research. The team is designing health & care institutions, laboratories (+ programming), accommodations (social & residential), offices, industry & logistics, leisure & retail, mixeduse, airport-related projects & hotels. With a vision to help the customers think in multiple dimensions about tomorrow s realities and to accompany them into the future by creating optimal configurations for all users. In doing so we look beyond the initial task. The office has an impressive portfolio of completed projects, among others the new Zaventem airport s arrival terminal at ground level with a commercial area (concept development), the new headquarters for Eternit (under construction) in co-operation with the Portuguese architect Souto de Moura, the extention, renovation and restauration of the BNP Paribas Fortis headquarters in Brussels, various projects for UZA in Antwerp since 2005, the renovation and extension of Flagey, an iconic former broadcasting building in Brussels. All projects are particularly customer-focused and the result demonstrates a special commitment to people, society and the sustainability, in terms of materials and relationships. The result of the experience, creativity and skills of the architects is expressed in a building which forms a recurring link in the company s integral process of value creation. 1 UZA Queen Mathilde Mother- and Child Centre, Edegem (Antwerp) In Antwerp SVR-ARCHITECTS designed a new Mother and Child Centre for the University Hospital of Antwerp (UZA). Three previously separate departments were brought together: pediatrics, maternity and neonatology were combined to offer mother and child smooth and comfortable support. At the same time the architects thought of the whole project within a healing environment concept. From the start the architects distanced themselves from the grown-ups hospital feeling and opted for a separate new building which through a unique architectural language, colour and material choice would project its own identity. Only a new monumental glazed bridge is the umbilical cord which connects it with the other departments of the UZA. Inside much attention was given to creating an at-home feeling. Room-high and wide windows offer a panoramic view of the greenery outdoors. With a new approach to light, space, colours, images, materials and programming such as a little school and a playground on the roof the architects endeavored to overcome the clinical feeling as an aid to the healing process. Finally, much attention was given to reducing energy consumption and to the rational organization of services. 24

1 Photo Steven Massart 2 Office building Befimmo, Brussels In 2014 SVR-ARCHITECTS won a competition to thoroughly renovate an existing office building in Brussels. The challenge was to realize a contemporary, passive office building with a BREEAM Excellent certificate. To attain this certificate and to optimize the usable office area, it was decided to make a new structure of slender concrete columns and beams. The existing load-bearing façade elements were replaced by a light, high-tech façade. Using opaque elements and printing the façade gives alternating transparent and semi-transparent effects. At each level the façade line is shifted to create a fascinating play of volumes. The flexible office plans were created by moving the rear façade. These can be sub-divided for rent. In two places on the ground floor, part of the volume is removed. Two quality courts, which create a pleasant work environment, came in their place. By maximizing the transparent façade, the application of a very compact cool ceiling and the centralization of the services on the façade side, light and very flexible office spaces were made. At the main entrance an atrium was designed to emphasize the openness of the building. 2 Photo Steven Massart 25

Founded in Asia by French architects and engineers, Archetype Group has always had a very strong multidisciplinary and multicultural identity, making it the core of its design approach, encouraging an attitude of innovation and seeking out stimulating projects that inspire the creation of unconventional, original solutions. Photo Archetype Group Jean-François Chevance Archetype Group, Vietnam Born in France in 1965, the French Architect Jean-Francois Chevance studied architecture at the Paris-Villemin School of Architecture as well as at the Paris-la-Seine School of Architecture, and is a co-founding partner and the Director of Design of Archetype Group. He has worked on numerous projects across Asia since joining Archetype in With 24 years of design experience, including 20 years in South East Asia, Jean-François has worked on numerous projects and earned extensive recognition as an architect, project director and design director from his work on a wide range of projects, going from office and residential buildings to large-scale master plans, from hotels and resorts to tall buildings and airport facilities. Archetype Group started its operations in Asia by creating a subsidiary in Vietnam in It began from humble beginnings with a team of eight employees before expanding initially into Cambodia, then Thailand and India, France and finally in more than 10 other Asian countries. Today, with more than 1,000 employees, and subsidiaries in 15 countries, the practice is one of the largest construction consultancies in Asia Pacific with services in Architecture & Master Planning, Engineering, and Project, Construction & Cost Management. Current projects include the 450,000sqm Water Bay Residential Complex in Ho Chi minh City, Vietnam, a 5-star 300-room hotel in Lombok, Indonesia, the LVMH Winery in Shangri-La, China, the 128-hectar South Delta master planning of the Thu Thiem peninsula, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications building, Ho Chi Minh city Located in the heart of the city, on a plot of land adjacent to one of the city s most iconic buildings - the 1891 Saigon Central Post Office - and at a stone s throw from the 1880 Notre-Dame Cathedral of Saigon, the Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Building occupies a highly sensitive site. Originally planned as a traditional building reminiscent of the colonial architecture of the 19th century and intended to enhance the conservative image of a government-owned company, it was made to progressively evolve toward a more functional and logical architecture while retaining some of the original features such as the use of street galleries and shading pergolas. Not less than 3 successive versions were drafted to get the owner s approval, however, and during this process, Archetype managed to keep most of the exterior plaza and most of the atrium that will serve as public spaces. 2 Thu Thiem South Delta master planning, Ho Chi Minh City The 128-hectar South Delta of the Thu Thiem peninsula is a unique and extremely complex site historically, culturally, environmentally and socially, in a unique city. So, Archetype aimed at reinforcing those unique aspects, to distinguish this project from themed parks and places that are commonplace throughout the world. In addition to the restoration of 92 Ha of waterways and wetlands, Archetype also prepared the masterplan for the sustainable development of the associated lands in a flood plain subject to regular inundation. Proposed developments include various walkways and boardwalks, observation towers, public parks, a resort, a bio-research centre and a visitor centre.

Created in 2007, ONZ Architects may be considered as one of the most innovative and successful architecture offices presently in Turkey. Photo Alain Bucher Onat Öktem ONZ Architects, Turkey ONZ Architects co-founder, Onat Öktem (1982) graduated from the Middle East Technical University-Faculty of Architecture, in Ankara (2004), before pursuing his masters at the Delft University of Technology Faculty of Architecture in the Netherlands. He stays then in the Netherlands where he joins the Dutch office 24H Architecture in Rotterdam, very much involved in the nature thematics. He continues his professional life at ONZ Architects as one of the founding partners together with Zeynep Öktem. Their multidisciplinary office, able to enter the architecture s complex conditions, creates ambitious projects on different scales up beyond the limits of geographical borders. In recent years, the practice is noticed and receives many national and international awards. In 2014, with the "Eco-Park" project, ONZ receives top honours with the Holcim Gold Award for Africa/Middle East, an award which recognizes the most innovative and advanced sustainable construction designs. Eco- Park is a hub for sustainable technologies and the design while using suitable sustainable features, promotes cooperation and sharing of new ideas between employees in both urban and architectural scales. "Birds Nest" is one of their most unique projects. Catching the solar energy, this "bird s nes" concept is attached to the existing building, to offer extra space. It is a small structure, modular to ensure flexibility, with a sloped roof designed to harvest rainwater and prevent harmful runoff in urban environment. To reduce the environmental impact, rooftop photovoltaic panels are optimized for maximum solar energy absorption, whilst passive design interventions limit the need for mechanical heating and cooling. Recently ONZ Architects have designed a cultural square and religious center for the North Cyprus Campus of Middle East Technical University. The new square is expected to increase connections between foreign students and local people through art and cultural activities. The project is also designed to explore the importance and meaning of coexistence in such a multi-cultural environment. The main aim of the project is to provide a shared urban space for learners and locals and places of worship for people from every major faith, amenities that are currently lacking in the region. It also offers a venue for the arts and culture and encourages cross cultural interaction and cooperation. The design collects these disparate functions under one roof, while ensuring plenty of privacy particularly in places of worship. More than the realization of these projects, to largely share and promote the architectural discipline, ONZ organizes exhibitions and workshops under the name of "Creative Initiative". In recent years, the practice is noticed and receives many national and international awards. Onat Öktem has been designer and curator of exhibitions in many cities including Tokyo, Bologna, Rotterdam, Breda, Ankara, Istanbul and Antalya. Involved in numerous exhibitions, workshops and events as a regulator and participant for the sharing of architectural cultures in his professional life, he has served as jury member in many international architecture competitions. Starting from 2014 he also serves as the co-director of d3 Unbuilt Visions. At the same time, he has been continuing his academic studies as a part-time instructor in METU since His projects are in a constant interaction with the nature. The strength of ONZ Architects is probably in this permanent exchange between nature and urban life. Onat Öktem believes that a better world is attainable through architecture. It is easy to follow the traces of their design manifest from their projects and how they embody the most suitable sustainable features in their designs, academic researches on the subject and negotiation with authorities for a more respectful use of the earth s resources. 28

1 Photo ONZ Architects 1 Eco-Park Technology Development Center, Ostim (Turkey) (2014) This project of 85,000sqm Eco-Park for sustainable research and technology wishes to promote small and medium-sized enterprises in Ankara s industrial zone. Offices and workshops are embedded in the terraced landscape. The holistic concept responds to the challenging sloped topography: workshops, warehouses and test labs are housed within a hillside terraced wing. The project incorporates sustainable features including natural lighting, geothermal heat pumps, passive ventilation, water efficiency irrigation systems and green roofs which add natural insulation and can be used for outdoor experiments and as recreation areas for the building s occupants. For Onat Öktem, it is the balance between nature and the human beings. Eco-Techno Park is more than a building incorporating sustainable elements it s an integrated concept with the focus on sustainability. Onat Öktem and Zeynep Öktem understand sustainable construction as much more than implementing sustainable technologies, but to seek the best individual solution for each project from the very start. 2 Kalkanlı Cultural Square & Religious Centre, Güzelyurt (North Cyprus) (2017) ONZ Architects have brought an elegant cultural and ecological ethos to their design of the new Middle East Technical University in Northern Cyprus. The brief called for a central urban space that will revitalize the region in which it is being built while also fostering relationships between students and the surrounding community. ONZ responded with a site-sensitive design built around lumpy topography to limit excavation, bold, organic architecture, and dynamic material choices, imbuing the Campus with the sense of vibrant cooperation the City hopes to generate. Their respectful interpretation of traditional religious design, executed with a strong sense of reverence, supports the project s overall intention to test tolerance in a multicultural environment. But the overall design is so well executed, by maximizing opportunities for social interaction and optimizing physical comfort throughout the year, that the experiment is more likely to succeed. 30 His commitment aims to open technical and scientific knowledge to metaphysical knowledge as the essential horizon of architecture. Photo Umberto Ferro, IUAV Renato Rizzi Italy After working with Peter Eisenman (NY) from 1984 to 1992, the architect Renato Rizzi (1951), graduated in Venice in Returned to Italy to devote himself to design, teaching and writing, he is a professor at IUAV (Venice). For him, these three fields of action are closely linked. Renato Rizzi is the winner of many prestigious architectural competitions, including the design of the Palace of Sports in Trento, Italy, and the Shanghai Pujiang district. In 2009 he won the gold medal for Italian architecture for the theme Il restauro dell antico (The restoration of the ancient) with the museum Casa d'arte Futurista Depero in Rovereto (Trentino). His last award is Frizt Höger Award, Berlin in He is also the author of numerous publications, such as L inscalfibile. Saggio sull immagine theological, (The scratch-resistant, essay on Theological Image, Milan 2011) or Il Daimon di Architettura, three volumes (2014): Theoria; Manuale; Parva Mundi. His last book, Il Libro del Lavoro, is published by Mimesis in Since 2009, he is director of the series "Aesthetics and architecture" for Mimesis Edizioni, Milano. Renato Rizzi taught in New Zealand, South Africa, Chile. Currently he is invited for conferences, in Chicago, Toronto, Warsaw, Bucharest, Berlin, Aachen, Rome, Syracuse, Torino, Moscow. After the last Architectural Biennale in Venice, he realized exhibitions in Toronto, Oporto, S. Petersburg, Warsaw, Milan. Since 2008, he is engaged to translate the poems written by John Hejduk (NY ). The idea is to translate from his poetry to his architectural theory. The final work will be ready at the end of the next year: two volumes, three books each. 1 Gdansk Shakespearean Theatre (2014) Two fundamental assumptions converge in this project: historical nature and political-cultural nature. The Baltic city had already known at the beginning of the seventeenth century the wooden building of the Elizabethan Theatre. After about four centuries a new theatre was built at the same place, but in an urban and landscape context completely different, restarting from their archaeological traces. In 2004, there was an international competition for the design of the new Elizabethan Theatre. As if the new theatre had to represent on the stage of Gdansk the political changes of the country. The outer edges are public passageways leading around the whole complex. This new pedestrian urban platform lies 6m above the entrance level. The height offers a new viewpoint of the historic and modern city with its contrasts and compositional counterpoints. Functionally, the edges ensure escape ways from the theatre, and pedestrian links with all the levels of the complex, including that of the basement at 5m below level ground. On the outside, the theatre s silhouette is characterised by three general aspects: volumes, masonry ribs, and an openable roof. From the volume s profile two very distinct parts emerge. The first belongs to the Elizabethan theatre, and sets the height of the building at 12m. The second belongs to the 18m high scenic tower. Technical, systems related and symbolic requirements make it the highest panoramic point. When the theatre roof is open, the view from the tower includes the interior of the theatre. Masonry ribs in the outer walls characterise the volumes of the theatre and scenic tower. On the outside, they indicate the rhythm of the modular indoor structure. They are needed to absorb the pressure that the open wings of the roof exert on the walls below in order to contrast the force of northerly winds. 30

1 Photo Matteo Piazza 2 InvisibHole, New York (project) The project is a circular "island", 220 meters in diameter, fully sunk in the waters of the Hudson River. The shape is constructed around a concavity that is a funnel-shaped well 100 meters deep. Light flows into this chasm to "illuminate" the spaces of an "invisible cathedral". Lying approximately 100 meters from the edge of Battery Park, the construction rests on the lip of a submersed rocky outcrop that is the geological base of the southern tip of Manhattan. There are two ways of accessing the "island": directly from the water, or from Castle Clinton by means of a shaft and an underground pedestrian tunnel 30 meters below street level. The inner space of the "cathedral" is a large basilica volume wrapped by a triple system of ramps to connect the bottom to the water's surface 100 meters above it. Excavation of the basaltic rock will furnish the main material for its construction. The project insists on and works with two opposing elements, water and void, which are only seemingly unsuitable for building. Their apparent uselessness is an act of rebellion of "form" against the pathetic and senseless use of what is "useful", as professed by contemporary culture, which forgets the other essential half of usefulness: the spirituality of interiority, not only of the individual, but of all things. The hole in the water, a cavity surrounded by fluid, is a reference 2 Photo Photo courtesy of Renato Rizzi/IUAV to the absence of interior sense individually, collectively of all things: of history when it is not only chronology; of places when they are not only spaces; of persons when they are not only bodies. 31

Through projects, interviews and critical articles XXI aims to provide a general view of the current approaches. We are curious to discover architecture and design s possible roles and potentials in generating new responses to the realm of neoliberal space making practices. 34
