Dear Friends of Catholic High, Our Green & Gold Fund Campaign, Be Empowered to Shine Your Light, ended successfully on June 30, As we meet with our donors at various events, I am impressed by the sincere commitment and love they have for Catholic High. I am proud of our alumnae and the significant differences they are making in our community and world. Most of all, I am amazed by our students as I watch them grow into empowered women, ready to change the world for the better! Our McCafferty Visual & Performing Arts, Biomedical, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Programs continue to attract creative and visionary minds. These programs are helping our students gain acceptance into top universities with significant scholarships and awards. Members of the Class of 2017 were awarded a record-breaking $11,126,636 in scholarships, grants, and awards, and were accepted into colleges and universities such as Rutgers, Georgetown, Temple, and Virginia Tech. In addition to being proud of our academic achievements, I am pleased to present this Annual Report acknowledging our many benefactors. Once again, our Board of Trustees and faculty/staff achieved 100% participation representing their commitment to our mission and students. Our Reunion Class Giving Program, Alumnae Awards recipients, and special events are also highlighted in this report. I hope you will take the time to review the information included. I extend my deepest appreciation for your continued support. It is only through the generosity of our committed donors that we will continue to grow and achieve our mission of educating young women in the Franciscan tradition, as we have since Sincerely, Barbara D. Nazelrod, Ph.D. 68 President

Credit card gifts are becoming more popular because of our online capabilities and the rewards offered by particular credit card companies. Many donors prefer to make a pledge as it gives them the opportunity to complete their gift over a period of time. A gift of stock may be transferred to Catholic High, avoiding capital gains tax. There are several options available when dealing with gifts of property. An outright gift of a house, land or vacation property avoids capital gains tax and entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the full value of the gift. There are also options that allow the donor to give property and retain the use of it for his or her lifetime. gifts planned for the future More than 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs. Many times, a gift can have a double effect because of an employer s matching gift. When making this type of gift, a donor must mail the matching gift form provided by his or her human resources department with the gift. A Bequest is a gift made by a provision in one s will naming Catholic High as beneficiary. It can reduce estate tax. A Charitable Gift Annuity allows the donor to receive benefits for his or her lifetime and to qualify for a charitable tax deduction. This form of support is attractive when one has highly appreciated assets. A Charitable Remainder Trust transfers assets to a trustee, who in turn manages the trust and pays income back to the donor for life, or for a specific period of time. When the trust terminates, the remainder passes to the school. Benefits include an income tax deduction, the avoidance of capital gains tax (when appreciated securities are used), as well as an estate tax reduction. If Catholic High is named as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, the policy becomes eligible for a tax deductible gift. 21 students of the year Sophomore of the Year - Erika Maher 19 Freshman of the Year - Olivia Russell 20 As an avid reader, one of Olivia s favorite quotes comes from Harry Potter, when Albus Dumbeldore pronounces, It is our choices, Harry, that show who we really are, far more than our abilities. In her first year at Catholic High, Olivia has already made choices highlighting her as an exceptional student and friend, earning her the honor of Freshman of the Year. Olivia has very quickly immersed herself into the school and traditions of Catholic High. Her academic pursuits include participation in both the STEM and the VPA programs. She is a member of the Barbershop Club, Ambassadors, and Mathletes. Additionally, Olivia assists with the Math Olympiad, as well as the Alumnae Luncheon. One of Olivia s favorite memories from her freshman year is the music adjudication trip to Florida. The Concert Choir won 3rd place, and the Advanced Choir won 1st place. Both hardworking groups received a superior rating. The experience left all participants with memories they will not soon forget. Outside of school, Olivia stays busy giving back to her community. She has taken ballet classes for nine years and lends her talents to a summer theatre camp at her middle school. She also served as a greeter at her parish. Looking towards the future, Olivia hopes to continue in the math and science field, with the possibility of focusing on engineering. There is no doubt that her remaining years at Catholic High will be filled with further accomplishments. Olivia s spirit of service and discipline serves as a strong foundation which will follow her wherever she chooses to go. Sophomore of the Year, Erika Maher, shared that receiving this award was one of her favorite memories at Catholic High. What made the day even more special, Erika remembers, were her friends support and genuine expressions of happiness for her recognition. Erika and her friends are one shining example of the bonds and spirit of celebration that live at Catholic High. Erika s time at Catholic High is filled with many accomplishments, including membership in the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the STEM program. She participates in many clubs and organizations, as well as showcases her musical talents in the clarinet choir, jazz band, and symphonic band. Some of Erika s fondest Catholic High memories so far come from the STEM summer camps. She has enjoyed bonding and working together with her STEM classmates to solve problems, and she continues to volunteer for the STEM camps as a way of giving back to the program that means so much to her. Outside of school, Erika uses her leadership abilities to help others in the community. She was inspired to create and run a program that teaches public speaking skills to middle schoolers. She also participates in a youth group and is an altar server. Her foundation of faith and commitment to others is one of the many reasons she was recognized for this award. Erika hopes to work in the science field when she leaves Catholic High. One of her favorite quotes of inspiration is, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, from Philippians 4:13. With her foundation from Catholic High and dedication to others, it is clear Erika will find success in whatever she decides to do. 21 The Catholic High School of Baltimore

22 Junior of the Year- Heather Bertling 18 Miss Catholic High - Maria Kelly 17 When Heather s name was called as the recipient for Catholic High s Junior of the Year award, she was truly shocked and honored. Heather shared, Everyone nominated for the award deserved it as well because they are all so strong, smart and talented. Heather s joyful commitment to her school and her community earned her this recognition. However, she humbly stated, I wouldn t have been able to do it without all of my classmates, my teachers, and this school which has helped me to become the person I am today. In her senior year, Heather has an impressive resume of academic and community involvement. At Catholic High, she is a member of the Green School Club, Mathletes, Book Club, and Animal Rights Club. Additionally, she is a part of the STEM program. Heather graciously gives back to the school by volunteering at Open House, STEM Day, STEM camp, and Math Olympiad. Heather s involvement continues onto the athletic field, where she plays varsity volleyball, varsity track, and varsity outdoor track. When Heather first joined these athletic teams, she had no knowledge about the rules of the sport. However, athletics has provided her some of her favorite memories, as she learned how to play and grow with her teammates, while forming lifelong friendships. As she looks to the future, Heather is interested in opportunities focusing on environmental engineering as well as helping people. Her time working at the zoo, an engineering firm, and volunteering have helped bring these interests to light. Heather s favorite quote is by Carol Burnett: Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me. Heather has courageously taken control of her experience at Catholic High, leading her brightly into her future! When reflecting on her four years at Catholic High, Maria Kelly remembers being named Miss Catholic High as one of the greatest honors she received during her high school career. She considers it a blessing to have crowned the Blessed Mother, who had such strong faith and love for God and others. Maria has displayed these same qualities, and serves as a shining light in her community. Maria spent her time at Catholic High involved in many clubs and organizations. Some of her academic achievements include membership in the National French Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and the National Honor Society. Maria was also a part of TCHS-TV, where some of her favorite memories were made. In addition, she displayed her musical talents in flute choir and jazz band. One Catholic High activity, in particular, that had an impact on Maria was her involvement in the school musicals. For Maria, performing in the musicals was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life. The musicals provided her the opportunity to meet so many amazing people, as well as a chance to boost her selfconfidence. Even with her busy schedule Maria found time to volunteer in her community. She has worked with the Asylee Women s Enterprise as well as the Tender Care Pregnancy Center. For many years she was also involved with 4-H. When she does have free time, Maria enjoys reading and writing. As a freshman at Hood College, she is grateful to take the title of Miss Catholic High with her. She feels it provides a special connection to Mary and Catholic High, and she intends to go out into the world with Mary s example as a guide. It is no doubt that she will find success in all of her future endeavors, and continue to exhibit such honorable character in everything she does. Annual Report

Asylee Women Enterprise helps those seeking asylum to rebuild their lives and their spirits by supplying transitional housing, community, and other support services. Sister Anne works to recruit, orient, and maintain volunteer engagement. In her free time, Sister Anne likes to read mysteries and visit friends and family. She is a part of a book club with one of her Catholic High classmates, where she enjoys lively discussions on each month s book selection. Sister Anne continues to encourage others to help leave this world a better place. Annual Report
