5 20th Annual Fundamentals of Historic Preservation Summer Course Tuesday, July 10 - Saturday, July 28 This intensive three-week program introduces the field and practice of historic preservation/heritage conservation. Classes are taught by noted experts from Southern California and can be taken as individual topic seminars or as a whole. In addition to examining the history and philosophy of the preservation movement, lectures and field trips to historic sites throughout the Los Angeles area will introduce participants to a broad range of legal, economic, aesthetic, and technical issues associated with the documentation, conservation, and interpretation of historic structures, landscapes, and communities. Continuing Education: AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) credits and ASLA Continuing Education credits are available for some sessions. CEU/AIA Continuing education units are available for all sessions. The complete program (fifteen days) is either $1500 or can be taken for class credit (four units). 6 Continuing Education Credit AIA: Seven AIA LU/CES units are offered for a one-day session, and 14 units are offered for a two-day session. Some sessions grant HSW and HSW/ SD credits. All courses are approved for AIA LU/CES credit. USC will take responsibility for reporting learning units when provided the appropriate registration information in advance. ASLA/AICP: Some courses are eligible for other ASLA and AICP (CM) credits Schedules and Shared Events Content and Contacts: Coursework combines high quality instruction from noteworthy instructors with opportunities for social exchange and networking. Three events provide the opportunity for social exchange and informal discussion. Complimentary Breakfast : Anticipating freeway traffic is always challenging in southern California. So we have arranged for a light commuting breakfast of coffee/tea, fruit and muffins available an hour before sessions begin, in the Harris Courtyard. Complimentary Lunch: Participants will take lunch together from noon until 1PM in the Harris Courtyard. Complimentary Reception: Each Friday after the sessions end we'll hold a reception with hors d'oeuvres in the Harris Courtyard to allow participants to meet one another. Course Schedule: All sessions are held from 9AM until 5PM on Fridays and Saturdays from June 1st until August 4th (with the exception of one Thursday course on June 28th). Course Locations and Parking Course Locations: All sessions will be held on the USC Campus. Participants will check-in at Harris Courtyard before classes begin to verify the assigned room. Sessions will be held in either the Doheny Library, the Ron Tutor Engineering Building, or in Watt/Harris halls. Parking and Access: Participants will find Parking Garage A a convenient parking location. The entrance is from West 36th Place and Vermont Avenue (Gate 6). Another entrance is from Exposition (Gate 1) across from the Natural History Museum (Exposition Boulevard and Watt Way). The cost of parking is not included in fees and generally runs around $8/day. Cabs should be directed to the Exposition/ Watt Way Gate 1. Please Register Early: Registering early will help assure you get your first choice. Keep in mind your course may fill up quickly because session sizes are small. Academic Philosophy Course work and content are comprehensive but also targeted toward the West Coast, Sunbelt and Pacific Rim. The ways innovation is incubated and encouraged in Los Angeles makes it an extraordinary place for new invention and progressive thinking. Topics and Instructors: Extensive surveys and focus group analyses were instrumental to identify topics and instructors. Topics have been debated by coordinators who have assembled first rate groups of speakers and discussants. Class Size: Courses are small, with a maximum of 25 participants, to facilitate communication and the exchange of information and viewpoints.
