1 1. John Montgomery. Born abt 1717 in Ulster, Ireland. First Generation John left Pennsylvania and settled in Augusta County Virginia in 1747 in the Burden Tract (Deed Book 1, page 361, Augusta County Virginia (8/20/1747) They lived there until 1779 or later when they sold land to their oldest son, James. According to the John and Esther Montgomery publication, there is no other record known of John and Esther Montgomeryafter this date. They were married by Rev. Johann C., Stoever, Jr. (source Historical Scoiety, Lancaster, PA.) John Montgomery and John Houston were active in the early Timber Ridge and Providence churches. (page 28, John and Esther Montgomery ) Several sources indicate that the order of birth of the children are not known. Year of birth does not check out with all source material. Esther was born in the 1720 time frame. Born abt Sarah died in Limestone County, Alabama, on 8 May 1832; she was 80. The Land Records, Augusta County, Virginia established Sarah (Alexander) as the wife of Alexander Montgomery.. Alexander Montgomery purchased land from Joseph and Abigail Alexander in He and his wife Sarah (Alexander) Montgomery sold the land in Source of death date and location was the Robert P. John died in Lawrence County, Alabama, on 2 Jan 1856; he was 80. Buried in Old Prospect Church Cemetery, Landersville, AL. John was recorded in the 1820, 1830, 1840 and 1850 Lawrence County, Alabama census. On the 1850 census he indicated he was born in Virginia and was 75 years old. John was among the first white settlers in Lawrence County. John is a church founder and elder ( ) per the Old Prospect Presbyterian Church minutes. A transcribed copy of the minutes is found in Old Lawrence Reminiscences Volume 17, Number 1, March Before settling in Alabama John and Margaret lived in Tennessee. The Willianson County 1806 land records lists John with 120 acres of land. Maury County Tennessee Tax book ( ) lists Alexander Montgomery (150 acres on Fountain Creek ) (John s father), and brothers John, Joseph and James living on Fountain Creek. Before 1806, the John and Margaret Montgomery family resided in Blount County, Tennessee. See Blount County, Tennessee 1800 and 1801 Tax Lists. The minister who performed the marriage of John and Margaret was Gideon Blackburn of Blount, TN. There was a marriage bond posted in JeffersonCounty, TN. The bondsman was Margaret s father, James Alexander. January 24, The death date is based on the Old Prospect Church minutes. Due to the age of the markers and vandalism, the grave marker could not be located. He was an elder in the church at the time of his death and there are identifiable markers for his infant great grandson W.H Montgomery (son of RC Montgomery). On 28 Nov 1798 when John was 23, he married Margaret Alexander, daughter of James Alexander (26 Sep aft 1799) & Martha Long, in Blount, TN. Born abt 1776 in Augusta County Virginia. Margaret died in Lawrence County, Alabama, on 18 Mar 1851; she was 75. In the 1850 Lawrence County Alabama census she recorded that she was 75 years old and was born in Virginia. James Nelson ( ) Fourth Generation James Madison Montgomery. Born on 28 Oct 1810 in Maury County, Tennessee. James Madison died in Moulton, Lawrence County Alabama, on 17 Apr 1891; he was 80. Buried in Montgomery Cemetery, Wren, Alabama. Listed in the Lawrence county land and census records. The Taylor Book says that the son of John and Margaret was a "James Matthew". From the Death Certificate of his son, Robert Craig, James middle name was Madison. The fact that James Madison was the son of John and Margaret is documented from a newpaper article describing his moving with his father to Lawrence County Alabama. Article was July 10, 1890, Moulton Advertiser. James was also recorded as a member of the Old Prospect Church. The article said that he marries Susan a resident of Limestone County after a short courtship and moved to Lawrence County Alabama. The Robert C. Montgomery Bible (in possession of John R. Montgomery) and the reference to the James M. Montgomery Bible (location unknown) as referenced by Taylor and the Robert Craig Montgomery death certificate establish this relationship. abt 1832 when James Madison was 21, he married Susan Craig, daughter of Adam Hall Craig ( ) & Rhoda (abt 1787-Dec 1849), in Limestone County, Alabama. James T. died on 7 Mar 1923; he was 84. He was called Jim Tom. He served in the Civil War. He was one of the first to purchase a lot on the site where Belmont now stands. He was one of the trustees of the Belmont Methodist Episcopal Church located south of Belmont. He is likely buried in the Belmont Cemetery but this has not be confrmed. James T. married Martha Womack Cobb. She was the widow of James H. Cobb who was killed in the Civil War. iv. John C. Born in 1842 in Lawrence County, Alabama.
